  • Unless you use Chromecast alot. Better of going for the Vodafone TV boxes

    • Yeah personally do not own any Google streaming products (Chromecast, Chromecast Audio).
Only a Google home mini we got for free from the ISP. Pretty good in terms of what it is.

PS: Apparently Chromecast Audio was recently discontinued due to slow sales, they became half price RRP at Google Store US.
I think can AU expect the same from Google Store AU soon.

      • CCA is a completely different product to this and they aren't substitutes.

        • Yes I am aware of that, just wanted to mention that they will be clearing out soon.

I have a Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast audio.

I have Netflix 4K so the Ultra is really handy connected to 4k tv, especially having a network port, and faster interface than my built in TV android app.

        https://m.androidcentral.com/what-you-need-stream-4k-video-c…

The only gotcha with the Ultra is with power..if it doesn't have enough power via usb then it will let you set it up, link to wifi, etc but one can not connect to it after that!?!

Just experienced that so thought I'd add it here for anyone who buys one via this deal.

Overall though, very happy with the ultra and so handy for travelling.

    • Is the Vodafone just a rebadged Roku? I'm looking for a replacement for my Roku 3 which has died

      • No that's telstra TV. Vodafone is Android tv

  • +1

Only benefit is that you can cast Netflix (but it's pretty hit and miss via Google home) that Vodafone TV can't as its Google cast instead of Chromecast

    • Yeah not sure what you mean here, do you mean using Voice Recognition to start playing a Netflix movie on the Chromecast?

      • Yea

        • Im happy without such features. Bring it all on when you can control absolutely everything and it works seamlessly no matter what brand/product etc. But when its only certain things I think sometimes it can be a nuisance.

EDIT: just adding the smart lights, to turn them on/off, is a useful feature though.

The Shield TV has full Chromecast, and voice playing for Netflix, Stan, and all of the normal apps like Youtube and the radio and music streaming sites. Seems to be more flexible talking to a Google Home to play on Shield, rather than talking to the Shield directly.

Anyone using Kayo got any experience with the upgrade you can expect when going from a Chromecast 2 to this?

    • 4k and ethernet

      • thanks for the reply. this is probably a dumb question, but if i'm casting from a device that doesn't have ethernet, will the speed just be 'normal' wifi speed?

        • Depending on where your router is compared to your chromecast, you could see a loss of 10% to up to 50%, with me cause theres 3 walls in the way from my router to TV I lose up to 70% so the new one will help a lot

      • I don't think kayo does 4k

      • Kayo has 4K? Pretty sure it's up to 1080p.

  • Don't understand this Chromecast Ultra. If its ultra so its 4K which only works on 4K TV.
all 4K TV i saw has internet connection(not to mention with youtube, nextflix and other apps).
So why someone need Chromecast Ultra?

    • +4

Because built-in apps are almost always terrible, or because they want google home integration, or because they want to be able to use a touch interface instead of a remote-control-and-screen one, or because there are literally hundreds of chromecast-compatible apps that aren't on your tv, or because they have an old tv and want to pay the extra twenty bucks to futureproof their streaming device, or because they want something portable, or like a dozen other reasons.

      • +1

This is very true, especially for first generation 4K TVs!

    • Some new TV's announced at CES 2019, will have Chromecast built-in to certain TV models, Also some new TV's will come with iTunes Store access (yes Apple decided to license it, not sure how it works, as far as I know they did not put an Apple TV into a TV.)

EDIT: sorry everyone, commented in the wrong place, then deleted the wrong duplicate.

    • Some TV's have Android TV with Chromecast builtin as well. Plus DLNA etc.

  • Get a Xiaomi Mi Box S
Does exactly the samething as the Chromecast ultra and more for relatively the same price.

    • Yes but they are essentially two different products, and some people will have preference of one over the other (due to whatever causes).

    • +2

… and doesn't have Amazon Prime either. A Nvidia Shield TV trumps a Xiami box accross all categorise except the cheaper price.

aren't all 4K TV's smart? It has always baffled me why anyone would need a 4K steamer.

    • +1

Not all tv smarts are created equal. Some much smarter than others. Pun intended.

      • fair enough

    • Well yes, but they don't always have a casting option from PC to TV
