many things in life are based on trade offs for convenience …..
mono blue tooth speaker vs stereo wired speakers.
mpr3 compressed song vs flac or wav
tiny phone optics and sensor on camera vs larger optics and sensor on dslr.

i take more photos with my phone because it’s always with me, but when i actively go out to take phots eg my sons swim carnival or weekends away, i take my dslr.

Would this be good for someone new to DSLR?

      Yes.

Frequently selected as “best intro DSLR” by photo journalists.

i own a canon, and then bought a nikon.
reason was nikon seemed to offer more per $ at a point in time as they leap frog each other about every 9 mths, so i find canon are usually in catch up for the same price points, though both seem good value at these special prices.

i haven’t looked back and have built my lens inventory around my nikon , though i had 2 lenses for my canon already.

also canon are investing more in mirror less cameras in the partial frame format, these are more familiar format to people who are more into phones for takinging photos, and seem to the be the rage, though i find it hard to beat looking through a view finder and lens which doesn’t have pixels and is as sharp as the eye can see, rather than at a pixel based screen on mirror less.

it would take a fair bit of skill to outgrow a d3500.

features as models go up are things like fold out touch screens which are handy when taking pictures at certain angles…more convenience than essentials.

big investment and your lock in comes when you buy the next lens
, which for me was an 18-105 zoom.

  • Photography noob here.. how does this compare to the D3400 or is this just the newer model of the same thing?

I have a D3400 and paid a very similar price, got a twin lens combo though. Also looking at the D5600
