Ridiculous price. If I didn't just get a new Grio Mips I'd get one for sure

Can't believe my luck. Was trying the Valegro yesterday in the shop, but didn't like it. Finally pulled the trigger. My Specialized Prevail can now rest in peace!

On what planet is a blown polystyrene mould helmet plus some stickers worth more than $30?

Seperating foolish people from their money is a business I should get involved in.

On the planet where our government insist that all bike helmets must comply with the AU/NZ design rules and all designs must be tested and certified to those rules and where the AU/NZ standard is different and more stringent than the Eu or US equivalent.

      • Is a $389 helmet that much better at preventing head/brain injury than a $15 helmet that meets the same regulations?

Same goes with motorcycle helmets. I recall the Snell standard required protection for multiple impacts - single digit percent real road crashes needed multiple impact protection, therefore the stronger "Snell" helmets provided less protection in most real-world crashes.

Same goes with a $389 bicycle helmet vs a $xx bicycle helmet at 1/10th or less price. Prove it or you're just blowing your money. It's not a problem if you're OK with it.

Or a $5 helmet for sale in Melbourne CBD from 7Eleven (in support of the Melbourne Bicycle Share program).
          Those are compliant.

I think it also comes down to things like airflow, weight, feel, quality of the straps, adjustable retention clips etc

I've had cheap helmets, and the straps don't feel great. Or your head sweats ridiculously in it because there isn't enough ventilation.

Yes a cheap helmet meets the same standards, but I would rather pay a little more and have something that fits right and feels good on my head.

@Fergy1987: Yep, this!! If you cycle slowly on the bikepath to work or to the park with the kids your $15 helmet might be OK. if you are riding for 8 hrs in a Gran Fondo/sportif or doing 3 peaks or racing in criteriums or even riding 'around the bay' etc then airflow and even 'aerodynamics' make a big difference. I have one of the Mojito helmets mentioned in this post and it is great on a warm day, very comfortable and great airflow/ventilation but not very aero. I have another Bontrager helmet that is designed to be aero and at 70 km/hr down a hill or into a strong headwind at 35 km/hr you can feel a difference but it is not as comfortable and doesnt have as good airflow.

If you're already $7K+ in for the bike, not to mention the wheels, what's another couple of hundred on a helmet to save 15 watts!

            • @2ndeffort: That is obviously ok, but your earlier post was only about the need for compliance.

@GG57: I have read articles from Helmet manufacturers talking about this very situation, most of the time their justifications are about the amount of money and R&D they have to spend on compliance and testing, particularly to appease the government for a relatively small market in Australia. Even for the key designs which they sell all over the world like the Kask Mojito, they sometimes have to have a special re-designed AU version that meets AU standards. Apparently we have some kind of side impact test that other countries dont require and this might mean the re-design and re-testing of a global product for a small market.

Either way, apologies if I was confusing or awkward. Most roadies probably buy their helmet to match their kit or save 5 watts is the real answer!!

    • On the place in the world where it gets bloody hot and more holes = better.

    • You should have been here for the Pushys deal. Carrera Helmets $9.99 - $29.99
