20 hour stopover each way. Should be able to get a free transit hotel and either go explore Beijing or hang out at the hotel.

Nice catch Neil. Makes it an even greater deal.

No,Air China sucks, you should never give it a try. I flew with them to Paris last year, terrible memories, basically, no English service. I just keep wondering how come it is so cheap.

        • +1

I last flew with them in 2000, and they were bad then. Scary how little has changed.

          • +1

@pull the lever: 18 years ago a flight like this was 2 grand, today is less then half. What are we missing?

            • +2

@Laziofogna: Nothing. Likely subsidized by the Chinese Govt. so you spend money in China during the stopover. Like those cheap Chinese trips where they wheel you through the tea shops, then the jade shops etc etc

            • @Laziofogna: Quality.

        • Thanks for the heads up have been looking at their flights to Paris i shall cross them off the list.

          I agree 100%
I had the worst flight experience. The person behind me would not allow me to put my seat down during sleeping hour. Yes I respect that my seat needs to be upright when it is dining time but when the lights are off and it is time to sleep, then let me sleep in peace.
What happens instead? She pushes my seat, demands that I put it upright because the screen was too close to her face (she preferred to watch sitting upright as it was more comfortable)
What do the staff do? Take her side, ask me to be understanding, then give me a free set of cards and keyring as if that would make it all better.
          I honestly have no words.
          Air China = disgraceful

@amybtran: Brings back memories of the knee defender. Guaranteed leg room and recline in economy.

@amybtran: Did she herself recline her chair? I bet she did

I flew Air China twice last year got what I expected. Yes very little English but I didn't really have any need to ask for anything. I used the free transit hotel in Beijing for 22 hours and that was actually quite a painless experience and I got a free meal.

        • Even as someone who's Chinese, the service is terrible. I refuse to fly with Air China but my parents seem to love them because they have China pride, lol.

I would prefer to pay extra and fly CX, they cater to English, Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, with pretty consistent service.

    20-hour stopover? Ouch

To lose nearly 2 days out of your 20 annual leave days just waiting around is tough, especially when you add in another 2 days travelling. IMHO.

    Milan is shit boring btw

    • just sayin'

Short train ride to Genoa and then down to Cinque Terre.

Hire a car and drive to Stressa and spend time around Lake Maggiore. Amazing place to visit surrounded by the Swiss Alps.

      • +2

Of course you can get out. Just putting it out there for anyone who was planning on spending any time more than necessary

Milan was at one stage the capital of the Roman empire. Constantine signed the edict of Milan there in the 4th century which basically made christianity the religion of the western empire. It has buildings like the Duomo. Art like DaVinci's last supper. One of the world's great opera houses at La Scala. Proximity to over 60 Michelin starred restaurants. 300km/hr train services to some of the major cities in Europe. I could go on. You want boring? Go to Melbourne.

Duomo is extremely overrated. Last supper sells out months in advance. Michelin 🌟 also overrated. Go to rome.

        • Every man and his dog goes to Venice and Rome. Beautiful cities but whatever happened to taking the road less travelled?

@Angelino: it died with 'omg i need more instagram likes' at this famous location

          • +1

@Angelino: I didn't go to Venice. Went to Florence though. And I live in woop woop

      • We went to a Michelin star restaurant in Milan and it was the worst meal I've ever had. overrated.

LOL, enjoy and Air China in the same deal. Thanks OP but can you change "enjoy" to "endure".

    • +1

If you don't appreciate a deal, simply walk away from it. No need to show people how rude you can be.

  • Hi all, I flew with them to Rome 18 months ago more or less. I would recommend you don’t go out of the terminal as it takes ages to get out. They also offer a free lounge which is very basic and has limited spaces. There were delays for all the legs too,. If you don’t mind those cons it’s an ok flight.

I’ve paid around this price for a Rome Sydney return flight but with China Southern, decent airline! Heard bad things about Air China though, however the Chinese airlines are investing heavily in new planes so if it’s a relatively new plane (A350, 787, A380) then it shouldn’t be too bad.
