Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2-in-1 Laptop Core i5-8250U, 4GB DDR4, 256 GB SSD, Full HD 1080p Touchscreen $569.05 @ Microsoft eBay

930
PUSH5

Seems to be a great deal for a Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2-in-1 at over 40% off. The spec details on the ebay store are blank so I went to the Microsoft Store website to get details. I have been told by the chat agent that the listing on ebay is exactly the same as the one on their website under this link https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/dell-inspiron-13-5000-2-in…

I know that 4GB isn't great for a laptop but I was told by Dell chat that it can be upgraded so I will buy another 4GB ram to upgrade it to 8GB. Please check the model specs and ram upgradability yourself before buying but I am confident that the information is correct.

Price on eBay is $599 and you can use the 5% off code PUSH5 to bring it down to $569.05

i dont know this laptop but never listen to the sales persons stuff. check to see you can definitely upgrade the ram, ie not just one slot or worst - soldered

  • Any reviews/oz bargain users that can speak to the quality of the full HD display?

  • +2

Looks nothing like the photo. It actually looks like an old portable DVD player with a screen.

RAM can be upgraded. Screen not suitable for outdoor.

    • What’s max ram?

    • -1

      Should be 8gb max atleast

        SO a 7th gen i3 model

        Not the eighth gen i5

        at least told to me.

        • +1

That can't be right can it? How is that worth AU $999.00? as listed on the ebay page

Edit: Oh you're right, they are both listed on MS site as $999. How absurd.

How convenient that they left the specs off the page…

          • @DerpFactory: Just giving you the entire message of what they sent me back which is why I didn't buy it.

        • +3

          Thanks,

Not so tempting if cpu is only a i3

        • This is what the chat told me:

Nori: Thank you for contacting Microsoft Store, this is Nori, may I please have your name?
You: Hi can you tell me if this item https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-13-5000-2-in-1-PC/…
You: is the same as the one on your website https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/dell-inspiron-13-5000-2-in…
You: since it doesn't have any spec details on the ebay listing
Nori: I will be glad to assist you with your concern.
Nori: Give me 2-3 minutes please.
          Nori: Thank you for waiting.
Nori: Yes, both products are the same.

I also did a bit of detective work by doing a search on the Microsoft store and it shows two Dell 13 5000 versions in the search.

          This one is available https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/dell-inspiron-13-5000-2-in…

While the one you described is out of stock https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/dell-inspiron-13-5000-2-in…

Maybe in December they were selling the i3 version but now they have run out and only have the i5 version

          • +1

@zinga77: Hopefully it’s the i5 version. If not can just send it back free for refund so worth the punt.

          • @zinga77: As I told you I didn't ask about any on the website I just messaged them on ebay using the contact seller feature on the product link.

When I click on the product link that they replied to in my eBay Message it takes me to the same link as your eBay post.

            • @prxy: Cool. I did it via the Microsoft store chat. I guess buyer beware and return it if the item is not the i5 so nothing to lose.

              • @zinga77: Even if it’s i3 it’s still decent price. Hard to find anything close with ssd and fullhd touch screen for $570

              • @zinga77: don't you have to pay return shipping costs?

30 days after the buyer receives it
The seller is responsible for return postage costs.

          • +1

@zinga77: Or maybe they have taken it off their own website and are trying to get rid of obsolete stock on their eBay store to unsuspecting customers with a product page completely devoid of any specs??

            • @prxy: You might be right there but the fact that they give a free 30 day return makes it a risk free gamble

            • @prxy: Why would they wen they offer free returns. They just gona have to spend half their time processing credit and paying for more postage.

              • @Gavman: Probably relying on not very tech knowledgeable people to know any better and possibly people who once receive an item can't be bothered to send it back.

                Think about it,

If it was an 8th gen i5 why wouldn't they be advertising this fact?

Wouldn't it help sell more units?

                • @prxy: I guess but when it was i3 they weren’t advertising it either. And many would send it back. That would be a massive cost to them that wouldn’t be worth the hassle. Every time they have to process a credit it costs them money for literally nothing. Perhaps a bum eBay store would do that. Not sure Microsoft would

                  • @Gavman: Why would non techy people return it?

Microsoft said they were selling you an inspiron 13 5000 2 in 1 and thats what they delivered.

They didn't say it was an 8th gen i5 did they?

Have you bothered to ask them on their ebay site what processor or tech specs it has like i did?

                    • @prxy: Others have so no I haven’t. And I haven’t bought one either but for matter of argument this seems to be how
Microsoft sell their stuff on eBay. U may be right u may be wrong but I guess we’ll Find out soon enough

                      • @Gavman: Also as I mentioned below did you notice that the sales history for that item goes back to at least 10th December 2018?

So is it a different specced version?

                        • @prxy: Well then it looks like they gona be getting quite a few sent back after tnite. For an i3 pc it’s still decent price. Where else r u gona get and sad fullhd touch laptop for under 600

                          • @Gavman: Yes definitely ok price for a 7th gen 2 core i3 but you can get the 8th gen 4 core i5 for a little above $700 every month or two from Dell and places like JB.
For my uses it is way more worth it but to each their own :-)

Another thing you have to look out for with this model is some have active pen support and others don't. So if that's important you need to do your research. (the only way to know is if it has the sticker saying supports active pen on it when you get it)

        • +1

We apologize that the tech specs are not available on the website and we are working to get those made visible

I love how that was December and they still haven't added the details

      • If you look at the sales history for that item on that product page you will see sales going back to 10th December 2018 which also heavily indicates it may be the same specs as the one they replied to me with.

        • +1

Ok just got a response back from Microsoft ebay. The first part is the response and after that is the question I asked.

Apologies for the lack of information; we are working to update our listings soon. Yes, the item you linked is the same item that is listed in our store. Please let us know if you have any further questions!

          Kind Regards,
          Jesse

          Your previous message

Hi there are no details regarding this item. Can you please confirm that the item is the same as the one on your website https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/dell-inspiron-13-5000-2-in…

          • @zinga77: Yes you are right here is what they replied to me with:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding a product offered on the eBay Microsoft Australia Store.

We apologize that those tech specs aren't available on the website currently and we are working to get those details uploaded quickly. To answer your question, it is the same product as the one you linked too and it is the same CPU as well, Intel Core i5-8250U. We apologize for the confusion.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to respond to this message.

            Kind Regards,
            Tanner

So those who ordered can be confident now.

            Edit:

Also poor form on MS part to use the exact same page for different models of the same item and not provide any details or specifications.

    Thanks so much OP.
Spoke with Microsoft Sales who basically had no data and pointed me to Dell tech support who are closed.
If the RAM isnt upgradable I'll probably sell it for what I paid.
If it is, then this is the laptop I've been after for a while (so thanks), slight upgrade from my 11.6 netbook from many years ago.
Was looking at the Acer on Amazon, but this is far superior (SSD instead of HD, smaller with the same res, and lighter)
Need an easier way to diagnose NBN faults (always on their end BTW) than bringing home my work laptop every second week when they've done "maintenance" on the network.

    • +5

no need to sell it "Free returns"

      • +2

        Correct 30 day free return

  • what's the battery life like?

    • +2

      Average. 5-6 hrs me thinks

  • +2

    and https://www.pcworld.com/article/3239065/laptop-computers/del…

    Conclusion
Boasting speedy quad-core performance, a swiveling display that lets it double as a tablet, facial recognition and a reasonable price tag, the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 is a solid ultrabook option for mainstream users. Only its dim display and middling battery life disappoint.

    • +2

For under 600 one can live with both drawbacks.

  • Does this give a receipt if I buy via eBay? I want to do Tourist Refund Scheme?

  • Op did you keep the chat session with the ms rep?
Seems to lots of versions of this model. 4gb no ssd dual core cpu would be a dealbreaker for me

    • +1

The eBay page doesn’t actually specify what it is which is super poor.

    • Yeh but the cheap models aren’t $999 surely

    • +1

Yes I posted it on the comment above

  • +4

is Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 PC a better buy?

  • Bugger paid $800 at JB a few days ago, any chance they would refund the difference?

    • They just never match any price on ebay.
      I tried last time…

      • OK thanks for the heads up by the time tomorrow gets here they will be sold out anyway

    • +1

Did you buy on a credit card with any price guarantee?

    • They have a 14 day price guarantee but I think only with bricks and mortar stores.

It doesn't hurt to try though.

  • Just be aware of Inspirons.. I have one which I think failed during MS updates and now will not boot-up.

  • +1

I think the 14 inch version is better value, with a bigger screen (but almost the same dimensions as it is almost borderless) with 8gb ram. $599 versus $799, so $200 more.

  • Pulled the trigger, I hope its Core i5, or else I am sending it back.

This is my second Inspirion 13, purchase the first one in 2014. Still going strong, but the touchscreen cracked.

    • It looks to be 2016 model

    • So this deals specs were wrong?

      i3 7th gen..

    • That's disappointing. I expect many refund if that's the case. Wonder why they're sending conflicting information.

      • Could be a lucky draw what you get! Sounds like ms have stock of both lines. How much worse is the i3 than i5 for general office stuff?

        • 7th gen i3 versus 8th gen i5 would be a huge difference im guessing

        • An I3 will only be dual core and i5 quad core

        • If you look at the product page the quad core 8th gen i5 is faster even than the quad core 7th gen i7!

      • it not false advertising on the eBay site so you can't claim on that

        • You don't have to claim anything since the ebay store offers the below:
          Returns:
          Free 30-day returns

    • I3 not as good a deal now

    • Who knows what's going on at MS eBay store.

      As i posted above here:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/435876#comment-6915655

they confirmed it's the same as the one on the MS store and I also got them to confirm it's the 8th gen i5????

If you look under Item specifics on the eBay page it has:

      MPN: VMC-00009

On the MS site page using view page source it has the same VMC-00009 MPN 5 times starting with it in the keywords.

If they send you an i3 I think you could demand the i5 rather than simply returning it for a refund?

  • +5

Both Dell Inspiron 13 5000 and 14 5000 are in-stock at the Microsoft Sydney Store for $599 and $799, respectively. Both are 8th gen i5. Just bought the 14” version. The salesperson confirmed the Ebay sale items have same specs.

    • +1

picked up one as MS in-store. JB (Strand) would not price match "we have had a lot of enquiries about this over the weekend and will not price match until we can figure out why MS are flogging them so cheap" (or thereabouts).
Model on display instore is "5379 Signature Edition, i5 8250U 256SSD 4GB" according to About>System. Handful of them still in stock.

      • Any chance you could upload receipt?

        • +1

it won't help you. It only mentions Dell 13 5000 VMC-00009.

          https://imgur.com/a/cs57VNt sign instore.

          • @battler: Thanks heaps!

Actually VMC-00009 perfectly matches the MPN on the eBay product page under item specifics. It's also on the Microsoft site buried in the page source.

Did your Dell 13 5000 have the sticker about being active pen compatible?

      • +1

I remember the specs printed beside the display model in MS Sydney Store was showing Core i5-8250U but the item they sold me was Core i5-8265U, same specs on their online store.

Edit: Just realised Core i5-8250U is for the 13in model. 14in model have Core i5-8265U.

  • Can you purchase at Microsoft Sydney Store online at this price?

  • Good specs.

The Intel 8250u (along with the AMD 2700u) is an absolutely awesome CPU and really makes it close to desktop performance.

  • Has any of you got the shipping confirmation yet from Microsoft ? I have asked for that today morning but still didnt get response.

    • +1

Just received a DHL text message!

      • Same.
