So five cents off every week then…

  • +2

From my experience in Melbourne, Shell’s 98 petrol price is consistently 6-8 cents higher than Clatex/7-eleven. I guess this would bring it more in line with others, will be nice if they run 10c off via flybuys at the same time.

    • +2

According to the ACCC people using the Flybuys 0.10c offers are losing more money than those not using it.

      • +5

        You misquote the ACCC.
People who use a 10c voucher save 10cents/l more than someone who doesn’t when filling up at shell.

What they did say is shell is by far the most expensive, along with BP, even with a voucher included. Caltex, woolies and independents are by far cheaper.

    • Well potentially you can stack with 4c off docket + 10c off promo, plus whatever off for purchases in store (buy your milk and toilet paper there, same price as Coles supermarkets). This way you'll save over ~20c a litre which will be cheaper.

Plus you can get flybuys + amex points on your purchases for no surcharge.

      • shell in my area can be as high as 15c more expensive than caltex.

I'd never touch shell because it will just encourage them to keep their price high.

    • +1

ULP98 at Shell South Melbourne is usually amoungst the cheapest in Melb cbd area. 137.9c today I noticed.

  • Thanks OP!

  • +1

The Geelong AFLW won last night so we should have a voucher on Monday.

But like in all other similar deals, even with vouchers / flybuys / promos like this, other nearby servos are cheaper 99% of the time.

    • you will only get the voucher from last nights win if you registered before the 1st Feb. If you register today you are good to go from the next game onwards.

      • -2

you are good to go from the next game onwards.

Realistically, there won't be any more though…

        • +7

Realistically the odds of either womens or mens geelong afl sides not winning a game this year is about the same as jv restraining himself from posting useless or unnecessary comments in bargain posts.

          • -5

            @2023: Still trolling I see…

            • +1

@jv: Seriously man, the hypocrisy coming from you. Every second post of yours seems to be an attempt at trolling or to incite some reaction.

Do you feel you have some kind of custodial ownership of ozbargain if you comment in 70% of posts, despite the fact that you add nothing?

              • -1

                @2023:

Every second post of yours seems to be an attempt at trolling

I was discussing the deal, not attacking other members.

Geelong have gone from 2nd to 8th. If that trend continues, you aren't likely to redeem this deal much…
Then taking into account that Shell often have prices 10-20 cents more than their competitors means you're probably going to be losing money with this offer.

                • @jv: As was I.
                  You dissmissed the deal with

Realistically, there won't be any more though…

I merely made mention how unrealistic that happening would be in a manner that conveyed humour at the same time.

                  • -2

                    @2023:

I merely made mention how unrealistic that happening would be

                    2nd 2017, 8th 2016, 16th 2019….

                    • +2

@jv: Regardless of how they finished off the season, they won 13/22 matches, and expected to finish in the 8 again, while the womens team had their first win from rd1 and have no history to go on.

So tell me jv, how is

Realistically, there won't be any more though…

                      a realistic comment?

Your comments have gone from won't happen to not likely. A couple more replies you'll get to likely or even pretty certain?

                      • -4

                        @2023:

                        a realistic comment?

Yep, I have a reliable source that things aren't going well in cat land.

                        • +1

@jv: jv, , would you be open to agreeing that if the Geelong men's team finish 15th or higher on the AFL ladder in the 2019 season, you will self-ban yourself from commenting on Ozbargain from the day after the 2019 AFL Grand Final until 2020 (a period of approximately 3 months), and should Geelong finish 16th or lower, I will make a tax deductible donation of $1,000 to a charity of your nomination?

Surely this is a reasonable offer given you're so confident that the Geelong men's team "realistically" won't win a game in the 2019 season and predict they will finish "16th 2019", based on your mystery "reliable source"?

                        • @jv: No surprise, jv has ignored my offer. Followed the usual jv pattern of making an outlandish statement, reverting immediately to claiming someone else is trolling when called out, failing to defend a position then just outright disappearing when confronted with reason. Chicken.

                        • @jv: So just checking in jv, hows that 'reliable source' holding up, knowing his information is as good as reading tea leaves?

                          • @2023:

hows that 'reliable source' holding up

                            ripsnorter?, ask them…

                            • @jv:

Yep, I have a reliable source that things aren't going well in cat land.

                              • @2023: Why do you think Ablett is playing up?

Not seeing eye to eye with coach. Just like at the Suns. It’s not going down well with his teammates too.

                                • @jv: Things not going well, yet sitting 2 games clear top of the ladder.

I'd hate to see what going well looks like then.

Ps. I live in geelong, have mates doing sports science with the club, everythings fine.

Your source is full of shit.

                                  • @2023: LOL… keeping believing that…

                      • @2023: Well by jv logic, the womens team should win every game this season! Because their prior performance predicts future results!

        • Realistically, there won't be any more though…
          16th 2019….
things aren't going well in cat land.

Geelong women's team are in the preliminary final.
          Men's - Geelong 10.12 (72) defeated Collingwood 9.11 (65).

If Geelong are going to finish 16th, does that mean Collingwood are going to finish 17th or 18th? Things aren't going well in magpie land…

            @ripsnorter:

hings aren't going well in magpie land…

            Lol at the stalker

            • @jv: Just can't admit you were wrong, can you, instead resorting to childish name-calling. So lame.

              • -1

                @ripsnorter:

                childish

lol… thanks for making me laugh pot…

                • @jv: I'm sorry, but what is childish about calling out your stupid comments? You seem to think you are the gatekeeper of Ozbargain but can't handle the heat when your bullshit is exposed. Funny how you are deflecting from the substance of my comments and making comments about me instead, rather than swallowing your pride and admitting you were wrong.

I was discussing the deal, not attacking other members.
                  Still trolling I see…

                    Such a hyprocrite.

                    yep… i can see.

    • The servos near you are not the only servos in Australia. Near me the Shell is within 2c/L without discount so this is a great deal.

      • That's why I said 99% instead of 100% but I was being sarcastic. There are some Shell's near me that have prices close to their competitors.

  • Good deal, shame the Shell near me always tend to be far more expensive than rivals in my area. Currently the nearest two Shell stations are 18 cents higher than Costco.

  • +8

Thankfully the deal isn’t tied to Carlton winning.

  • +1

shell is a joke in my area, its always 10 cents more than anyone else so this voucher or coles dockets are useless as even with the discount your paying more than anyone else.

Is their fuel that much better than anyone else's to be charging such a premium…

    mixo

    • -1

Presumably that's because they caused large groups of people to shops at Coles and then buy fuel because they're controlled by advertising (hurr durr advertising doesn't effect me). ACCC says they lose money by doing this.

      • Or, most people just don't care if their petrol that week costs an extra $4.

People on here have a weird obsession with petrol prices. Trust me, it's not normal.

        • +2

Yes some people will drive an extra 10km round trip to save literally a couple of bucks on fuel. Waste time and fuel consumption.

      • they lose lots of sale and lose some money, but not that much from what I read.
I guess that extra profit makes up the loss from the sales.

  • +1

Why bother offering something that will cost your customer more.In the end shell will never get my business pulling this shit.Even thought about boycotting coles for offering a discount on something that is already overpriced.

    mixo

  • Great.. So people will now be at the counter opening phones to find emails, to get link
..to get barcodes. Scanner will be iffy on some scratched screens…then u will miss the 7mins..

Why do a promotion to frustrate customers? Surely a 24/ 48hr window after a win and suggest taking a screenshot.

    • +2

I've never had a transaction take anywhere near 7 minutes. In fact, I can't remember one taking more than 1 minute.

Wait till your turn then activate it, it really isn't hard… How some of you get by in life I have no idea!

      • +1

Normal transactions sure. But these promos requires fiddling on the phone which can be temperamental. I recall once trying to use a similar promo at BWS - the customer service dude didn't know what to do and fumbled and closed the app before it was scanned. And guess what, the voucher code won't open on the app the second time. That's easily more than 5 minutes wasted.

Just because we know what to do the same can't be said about the underpaid staff at petrol stations.

        • +1

Not really. I use my phone at the woolies to scan both myer one and woolies rewards, and the 4c off docket. Takes 10 seconds. The staff at the petrol stations expect this every customer, at my place they even remind me when I forget both rewards card and myer one.

        • This, and when someone in front of you has an Android spud phone and take a week to get the voucher up. You will experience it sooner or later..and my favourite thing about Coles, when the scanners done work the staff can't enter a barcode/ voucher manually.

  • -2

This is not a bargain. This is the same as those ebay scam discounts. Basically they have bumped up the price above the average and then using stupid discounts like this to make it seem like a deal..

    • +1

Walk into the deal with your eyes open, if the price doesn't work out to be cheaper, don't drive there.

If you aren't using petrolspy before you go and buy your fuel, you are cheating yourself out of a few bucks anyway.

      • I guess I am just frustrated that petrol companies seem to take us for a ride in regards to price gouging on a constant basis. With Shell being the biggest offender.
To then offer these so called discounts based on random football club winning seems disingenuous.

    • technically this is not a scam. because their prices are always higher. with or without this discount.

    • Unfortunately, until March 2019, Viva sells fuel to Coles at wholesales prices. Coles then put their margin on top. Moving forward Coles Convenience no longer has to pay brand fees to the Coles' Supermarket division following the Wesfarmers demerger, and Viva will actually sell the fuel and pay a commission to Coles for each sale. This is supposed to re align the prices and improve volumes. Lets see.

  • +1

I wonder how many john smiths sign up haha

  • Just a heads up shell r about 15 to 20 cents more expensive the the others so your not saving but spending more

    • I don't know where you live but my shell right now is actually cheaper than everyone else (burwood)

  • I wonder what kind of people fill up at coles shell bowsers being ridiculously overpriced compared to almost every other station, often literally accross the road. Maybe the kind of people who don’t like to wait? Or rich people?

    • People that line up the vouchers so it is in fact, cheaper to fill up.

    • +1

I was wondering with my wife why they don’t have click and collect groceries at my local coles but force me to collect at Coles express (only 100m) away.

My theory is to force you to go there, you might be lazy and fill up up there as well instead of the Caltex nearby who’s 15c cheaper.

      • Aren't you need|d to pay extra to pick up at the petorl station?

        • yea, c&c fee. But there's no option to pick up at the supermarket lol

  • Thanks op, might come in handy for those rare occasions where my local shell is only 15c more expensive than any 7/11 in Australia and i have a 10c off offer from flybuys and 4c off shop docket.

    • -1

Shell fuel would be worth the 1c extra over 7-11 fuel in most cases

  • Understand for most people this isn't great but in my country Vic town the servo's don't compete so Shell is often the same price as the other 5 or so servos, so this is a nice little saving on top of the fly buys deals, thanks OP

  • +1

Stopped using shell for a long time now since they have been 6-10c/L more expensive their other suppliers (at least in the Bris areas).

  • +3

Current prices at my local which has about 5 stations within 500ms

    3x independents 116.9
    BP OTR 119.9
    Coles 139.9

    Go figure.

They don’t even drop their price when competitors are consistently lower.

    • Go figure.

      Not a surprise…

    • Same in my area..Coles fuel prices are a joke.
When i go past there are always people in there filling.

Go figure..maybe they are a business so they dont give a rats and have a shell card?

      mixo

  • Not when… If 😂

  • When I was working as a rep. I had a company shell card, if you asked me in those days what the price of fuel was I wouldn’t have a clue, now retired I’m acutely aware of fuel prices and don’t understand why anyone would support these massive companies ripping of the man in the street, (or in their car) I buy my fuel from United/Freedom/and sometimes 7eleven so in my own very small ways I’m telling these ripoff merchants where to stick their phone discount vouchers.

    • I am afraid the company card is why BP and Viva set higher prices as they sell into the corporate World. Hence the reason why BP's and Shell stations are often on major roads with high volumes of corporate card holders driving past.

  • That’s phoney discount vouchers lol

  • Is this offer compatible with a Shell fuel card? I cant find anywhere that says otherwise.

  • +1

Worth it in Perth WA, where Shell prices are competitive on cheap fuel day (currently Monday). I signed up to this a few hours ago and got a discount e-mail just then for the recent win. Gonna fill up today using the code and because its cheap fuel day! Thanks OP.

    • Exactly - we have it pretty good out West in this regard, especially with FuelWatch. Now, if only the rest of the country could catch up to us…

  • +2

    got the voucher.

  • Got the voucher too. I find their prices quite competitive in my area (VIC) and I make flybuys on purchases too so happy to grab 9c off a litre when stacking with my food docket voucher. Plus I’m a cats fan so win win win!

  • used mine and the wife's voucher in Perth, coles is my go to fuel, as I use gift cards.

some reason the expiry of the voucher gave another 60 minutes.

if the cats lose, i'll try a screenshot to see what happens.

bit of work to save $1.50 though.

  • +1

Can confirm this stacks. I signed up on the weekend (sat i think) voucher was emailed monday morning.

Monday is cheap fuel day in Perth, Shell near me was @ 110.9 which was about one of the cheapest. Stacks with Coles regular 4c voucher. 101.9c fill up!

obligatory "suck it easties" as WA finally gets a decent deal over the rest of the country. Hopefully one day you can catch up and get an awesome system like fuelwatch!

  • Interesting that the relationship between Coles and Viva will change from March 2019…Coles will remain responsible for operating the Coles Express retail stores and will receive a commission per litre of fuel sold at Viva's Shell filling stations, while Viva will receive an enhanced royalty on convenience sales. This will in theory bring the price of fuel more in line with the other majors as opposed to being a premium, high end offering. We will see as the 2Q19 unfolds.

  • +2

Just as an example of how to use this deal/humble brag from my fill up today:

U95 was 134.9c at the pump

-5c per litre for this deal
-4c per litre for Coles shopper docket
-8c per litre for Flybuys targeted offer this week
-10c per litre for $20 spend instore (bought a sodastream refill and a $1 chocolate i was going to buy anyway).

    134.9 - 27.0 = 107.9c per litre for U95

Pretty sure that far cheaper I could get anywhere else.

  • +2

I tried a so called expired voucher yesterday, and it still worked.

  • What happened this week?
Geelong won the JLT game against Essendon last Thursday - but no coupon arrived?

  • How soon after the win do you get the email? Hoping to stack with the v power which expires tomorrow

  • Barcode works well

  • +1

cashier got so used to me bringing out my phone, had to break it to her cats lost this week.

  • Is anyone having the same problem with the barcode not stacking with v-power 8c off anymore?

    • I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but it didn't stack for me when I tried it with the 10c (not 8c) Shell V-Power app coupon.

    • I'm having the same problem. It's 1 or the other :(
