CTEC vs Zigbee, what the main difference, I’m a bit worried with a big house utilising all of my wifi! What would the best bet for a 4 bedroom house two loungroom setup?

    • +1

C-tec switches are more expensive than the Zigbee gadgets but they don't need a bridge to work.

Zigbee gadgets require a Zigbee bridge to work but they are much cheaper than the certified Wifi switches.

Range wise, 10-30M for Zigbee Mesh, 30-100M for Wifi NetWork.

Power consumption wise, Zigbee gadgets have very low standby power consumption compare to Wifi gadgets.

Both of Wifi and Zigbee could be good for your house, if you are on a budget then Zigbee could be a better choice.

some consumer wifi routers cant handle alot of wifi devices

    It's cool

OP, if you were building a new 4x2 house what technology would you install in your house?

    • +1

I prefer C-bus I guess, I will definitely get it if I win the lotto or something.

If it is only about Smart Lighting Control, then Philips Hue is my choice, currently its the best lighting control system on the market.

For a whole house automation setup, "Nue" or "The Nero" could be a good choice.

last time i looked, these are basically sonoff devices, which arent legal in australia? correct me if im wrong?

    • -1

Sonoff is sold by some Chinese eBay sellers from Shenzhen. Not certified products, not legal to be sold or installed in Australia.

This Nue brand ZigBee gadgets are SAA GM certified legal products sourced locally, supplied by a smart home supplier in VIC.

Can we use this in New Zealand?

        • Yes. Australia and New Zealand use the exact same harmonised standards.

Additionally, New Zealanders are capable enough to legally install this light switch themselves.

Australians are incompetent and will burn down the neighborhood so they need a licensed professional to do it for them.

      • While this is partially correct with Sonoff. Some Australian sellers have the correct certified Australian requirements.

I've got existing LED downlights (3 gang wall switch, each controls a different zone) that I'd like to make smart along with a ceiling fan / downlight switch. I'd like them to worth with google home, Would Ctec switches work?

    • Yes, not sure how many lighting circuits you want to control.

For example, if you have 3 lighting circuits, you can use a 3 Gang C-tec switch to control them (On/Off) separately.

You can add a fan controller on the side of this 3 gang switch if you like to control (on/off & Speed) an AC ceiling fan.

  • Do you have downlight that has an au plug connector that does not require electrician to install?

    • Hi, all the downlights we carry come with AU standard plugs attached.

You will still need an electrician to install some surface sockets in the ceiling first.

      • What I meant is something like this, where there is au plug on which I just need to plug to power plug (as at the moment I have these kind of downlight at home but not smart one). Thus, I can just unplug it myself without an electrician

  • OP, If I use Nue switches and I want to add a scene switch to act as a two way switch, do I need to have it wired to the same string of lights, or just wired to the lighting circuit in general?

    • The Scene Switch is more like an (on/off) remote controller of a Nue Switch or Gadget. It is not wired on any lighting circuit, you need to pair it with a switch or a group of switches or light bulbs. Instead of getting power from batteries like how most of the remote controllers are designed, the scene switch is mounted on the wall and powered by an AC power supply.

  • OP: I have a total of 9 downlights in different parts of my living room and kitchen which aren't too far away from one another.

Different lights are controlled by 4 different switches, situated in different parts of the house.

I have an Amazon Echo Plus which supports Zigbee.

Is it even possible for me to even install your lights? If it is which would you suggest I get?

Also, who would I need to engage to get these installed? Do you have a list of qualified electricians who could assist or do you provide that as a service?

Im located not too far away from your warehouse.

Thank you so much in advance for your advice!

    • Hi, thanks for the inquiry.

Basically, any trailing edge dimmable LED downlight can be controlled by these C-tec Smart WIFI Switches

You don't have to install new lights if your existing LED downlights are trailing edge LED dimmer compatible.

You need an electrician to install the dimmer switch and the downlights.

Please send us an inquiry to [email protected] we will reply your email with our sparky partner.

  • Does anyone know if this works with zigbee2mqtt?
