I've been eyeing this off for a week or two since losing the remote to my Shield TV and wanting to unify my AV systems and lights. • Remote is RF based, not IR

so it can't control IR based devices?

    • +5

the hub and IR repeater send out the IR signals. the remote connects to the hub using RF, which means you don't need to have line of sight from the harmony remote to the hub. means you can control things from other rooms (it's cool).

    • Devices are controller via the hub, which has the IR blaster in, comes with two external ones too if you need to reach hidden away components.

    • +1

It can. The remote communicates with the hub using RF, and the hub transmits IR to your IR-based devices.

Edit: Beaten - I must type too slow!

  • +3

How do you lose a remote? Why would anyone take it out of the room.

    • The shield remote is tiny and the living area is shared with the kitchen, I wouldn't be surprised if it fell into a bag or box and got misplaced. I've cleaned out most of the house and I've yet to find it :(

    • +1

The Shield one is pretty small. I could see how it could get lost.

    • +1

yep the shield remote is small and tbh not a great remote anyway thinking of getting this just so I don't have to deal with it

      • The biggest bug bear is losing voice search, which was handy in youtube. You can use a google home to search for you but its a bit of a mouthful

“Ok Google, Play [video title] on YouTube on SHIELD”

        • +6

Wouldn't it be great if you can ask OK Google, find my Shield remote

          • @alvian: Why not, get this deal and just stick at the back of remote and you can say "OK Google, tell tile to find my Shield remote".

        • Sorry to hijack the thread.

I bought the Shield TV with Remote from previous Kogan deal. It's running the latest 7.2.2 Shield Experience and latest firmware for the Remote. However, the Voice input on the remote never worked since day 1.

When I press the Mic button, Google Assistant is prompting on screen, but it does not pick up or listen to my Voice.

Is your remote's Voice function working well?

      • Sorry, I disagree, it's a great remote. I have used one for 18+ months without ever losing it (and I have even smaller remotes than this). It is fool-proof, but obviously not idiot-proof :p

        • I just really hate the touch-sensitive volume buttons

    • ask the toddler! :)

    • When someone breaks their own, they might be inclined to steal one from someone else.

      • Aaahhh. Never thought of that.

  • i just picked up the harmony elite last week (still $299 at the logitech ebay shop) and it's the bomb. i was gonna go this one but really wanted the screen for the extra customisation per activity.

regardless of option, the hub is incredible. i already had these little IR emitters on our tv and receiver which hooked directly into the hub - perfecto!

    • I also run the Harmony Elite, the hub is amazing, but the remote itself is definitely great for WAF if you've got a somewhat complicated setup.

My Mrs can now control everything she needs and if it doesn't work, just presses the help button and 99% of the time it fixes it.

      • +5

yeah waiting for it to be $199 again

        • I have only seen that bargain once in the last few years. I got mine for $249 i think. I kicked myself for not getting it when it was 199

          • @thekow: Yep, same wish I'd just bought first thought later, haha.

Though I managed to pick up a Harmony Ultimate for $60 during the DSE demise so it wasn't all bad but the layout of the Elite is much better.

      • +1

Wish my Mrs would use the help button when something goes wrong. Easier for her to call me apparently…

  • That is fantastic price

  • I want the simplest option to get a remote that will let me control my Sony TV and Aktimate speakers (the aktimate remote is a turd). I’ll continue controlling Kodi with an Xbox controller. Is this a decent deal or are there cheaper/better options for me?

    • Harmony 650 if everything is Infrared

  • Grabbed one of these for $39-95 during Dick Smith stores sell off. It works great and being IR and Bluetooth is very handy.

    • I drove to about 5 stores that day, missed a couple by minutes!

    • So did I, and an ultimate one with colour screen which can have more activities which with then sync to the Hub set up. I IR taught my ceiling fan controls so I can say hey google turn on or off ceiling fan.

Does this work with my yeelights?

    • +1

NO not directly, it does work with lifx and the other one though. Yeelight does not work with harmony. I have e-mailed harmony a few times about it, also contacted xaomi. Basically the story is X is waiting for harmony to give them access to something, and harmony is like .. oh we will pass on the feedback. So it's in limbo at the moment. I am sure there is work arounds. I was wanting to control the air purifiers.

  • Does this work with Google home or IFTTT?

Example. Can I link it to a command like "Netflix time" and turns on TV sets volume on TV turned off lights etc.

    • Yeah the hub has Assistant integration now.

    • Yeah it works great. I have one linked to Google Home

  • +1

I bought this some years ago, ($82.37) still works fine and with Google Home Integration I just say "turn on xbox" and my TV, Amp and xbox all turn on, so don't worry if it hasn't got enough buttons. https://www.amazon.com.au/Logitech-915-000194-Smartphone-Cer…

Add an IR repeater for $12.05 and my whole Home Theatre setup is complete

  • Got this for <100 a few years ago too. Great remote. Some of the home automation buttons are useless (for me) but that's not a problem.

  • The Companion feels great in the hand, has a good button layout, and excellent battery life, however it loses a few WAF points due to the lack of a screen (have to remember what button is assigned to what activity, you don't know what activity you are currently in, and lose the ability to assign extra commands), no help button, and no backlit keys.

Pony up for the Elite if you want it all ;)

  • Appears to have increased to $202.91 now.

  • Got this for $155 delivered from eBay a couple of months back. Has been fantastic

  • Dammit.. Too slow. Anyone know where else I can pick this up for a decent price?

    • Check the current eBay sale, sydneytec has this harmony companion or the ultimate for $180 using the code 'PASSIONATE'

    • Link posted here for a refurb older model for $92, would do the same job.

  • +2

The lack of backlit buttons makes this a poor option if you watch in the dark. Exacerbated by the buttons being small, fiddly and indistinguishable from one another. We keep a mini torch on the couch which is an annoyance in itself.

It's crazy how $156 is a deal though. It was $89 when we got our X900E early last year. Perhaps it's the personal assistant integration that's inflated the demand/price so much.

  • Although I am a loyal Logitech fan, I kind of expect new products to be less plasticky these days for the price you pay for. I find the squeaky joints of my current Logitech to be disappointing in terms of quality, when compared to the rather solid Shield remote.

  • Back in stock for $148 if anybody is still chasing one. 4 left.
