It has got "Premium" in the name! It must be good.

  • Looking at getting a tv around the 1K range, from what I've read Samsungs are the best? Should I jump on this?

I don't advise jumping on your TV. That would probably be a waste of your thousand dollars.

      • P6 or p7

        • Yeah really tempted by the P7, seems to be decent for the price but read a few reviews that have hated on it as well.

    • The freesync feature compatible with XB1X would be useful.

However from memory the (NU8000) local dimming isn’t great, viewing angles weren’t particularly good, and I don’t think it was super bright for HDR.

However, unfortunately the best features in terms of PQ are found in the upper tiers of the Samsung models, particularly the QLED panels.

I’d probably choose the Samsung myself mainly as it has freesync but even freesync isn’t completely without glitches.

Might as well use PUSH5 and save PLACE10 for something else.

  • Kogan have a 55” 4K LED TV for $399.
Given I’ll only be watching 1080p what’s bad about it?

    • The software on Kogan TV can be a pain to deal with. My parents have a 55inch Kogan and switching over to the HDMI port with Chromecast is a nightmore - it hard resets the TV about 60% of the time, which means it takes about 4-5 minutes to switch to Chromecast. I would never ever buy a Kogan after their experience with one. Thankfully the LED on the bottom right corner has died which means that they need to get a new TV. They are gonna try a Hisense p7 55 next. Hopefully this one works out much better.

Things I wish I knew when I purchased a Samsung TV in 2018.

1 - If you have a dark scene and subtitles are enabled, when subtitles show, the whole picture VISIBLY changes brightness. When the subtitles disappear, the whole scene goes back to dark. Doesn't seem like much but it's (profanity) annoying in person. Read up here: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Qled-and-Frame/Brightnes…

2 - If you don't have a 4K HDMI receiver and you want to connect your devices straight to your TV, then have your TV use ARC to push sound to your receiver, 2018 Samsung TV's ** DO NOT ** pass through DTS surround sound. They pass Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital + quite happily, but not DTS. Previous years did, 2018 Samsung series' across the board don't. I've worked around this by outputting sound directly from my HTPC to my non 4k amp via toslink, but I shouldn't bloody have to.

Other than that, TV's are great.

    • Can I ask which model you have? I have the MU6100 and haven't noticed the brightness change with subtitles, but probably will now!

        NU8000 75"

Watch "The Haunting of Hill House" on Netflix, it's got super dark scenes and you'll notice it there if it affects your model.

    • Are you sure you don't have DYNAMIC screen mode on? I think some of the modes try to compensate and change the brightness. I have the 6100 and noticed screen brightness adjusting throughout, and changed the mode and it 'fixed' it.

  • Great TV & price. I'm eyeing up this or the Hisense P7 to purchase in the next 6 weeks before prices jump with 2019 models.

Comments regarding Samsung brightness I'm assuming are in relation to the Samsung 7100, which is not a patch on this model, according to reviews.
