    Quickly hijacking the top comment:

If you're wanting to DIY install this motor, Auto Openers released a great video showing one of their technicians installing the unit from scratch. You can check that out here!

Repeating my original comment from this deal here again.

Came here to say a huge "Thank you" to the REP. This level of service is simply amazing. A right piece of advice, very prompt dispatch and delivery and extremely nice communication. Cannot be happier with the service. Please post more deals, I am pretty sure that OzBargain community will be appreciating your way of doing the business.
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!

    • +2

Excuse me, whilst I screenshot this and send it to my employer… :)

Hope those remotes & holders are treating you well Ametric, thanks for the feedback!

      • +1

Hi mate, remotes are working great so far (I wish they work even from a longer distance, but it is just my wish, no complaints here), haven't had a chance to use holders yet (as forgetting to install them in cars). Pass hello to the employer and tell him a "thank you from the customer and that you are doing really well on your position". Thank you! :)

        • How far away can your remotes work?

          • @Tony555: I was buying a different type of remotes from this shop (not this whole set with motor and remotes), I didn't check the exact distance, but I would say around 8-10 meters

          • @Tony555: The remote controls for this unit have been tested to work out to 100m in an open field test. This is a fancy way of saying that when in the middle of nowhere, with no competing signals, wifi's or anything the remotes have a fair range. In an urban or residential environment you normally get 10-20 metres, however, doorbells, baby monitors houses and cabling can cause interference.

The remote controls operate on three different frequencies to overcome a lot of this interference, however.

    • +1

Can second this, a pleasure to deal with.

  • +1

I also bought this from the last deal. You won't regret it!

My only advice is if you have a double door, do NOT try it without a lifting partner. I did it alone and successfully, however, a lot could have gone wrong. It took several attempts to lift the entire heavy door up, around and back onto the bracket, whilst balancing on a ladder.

    • +1

Definitely helps if you have another set hands, depending on the size of the door. Check out the video posted above - There's an example of using a ladder as a prop to save you from falling off the ladder. That can cause some serious injuries!

  • I've never looked into this type of product, but compared to most things in life, this is a very very cheap way to make your life much better

    • Garage door automation is an awesome thing to have. Get you into the house fast so you don't have to deal with the heat / rain / general Aussie weather.

  • Who would install this for me? I don't want to DIY. Do I call a sparky?

    • Hey mate, let me know your rough location and we can recommend someone in your area for you.

      • +5

How did you know I live in a rough location?

        • +6

          Must be in the name…

          • @GrecDeFreckle: LOL. Just need to know what category of tradie to get.

            • @Wardaddy: Usually, a local garage door technician is the go. Depending on the job, a general handyman can miss or not know to do certain steps, like re-tensioning the springs, cleaning out the tracks and just general work on the door to ensure smooth automation.

We've been around for a little over ten years, so we've come to know the best folks to go to around the major cities, as well as the areas a little out of the way.

        • wrong reply

        • Could not stop laughing at this one A+

      • can you recommend a good tradie for post code 2747?

        • Hey mate, give Michael from Automated Garage Door Solutions a call. We've referred him onto OzBargainers before in the past as he does fantastic work and knows exactly what he's doing. You can reach him on 0439 196 608.

          • @GrecDeFreckle: thank you

            • @Jaff: Not a problem at all, happy to help!

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Hey mate can you recommend some one for post code 3170/3175. I am being told i'll have to replace the whole door along with the opening mechanism (roller doors)

            • @scorrrpioo: Hi mate! Try Paula and Ash from 24/7 Garage Door Services on 0439 563 233. They're located not too far from you and will be able to help you out as far as a new motor.

Interesting you're being told the whole door needs to go, however. I had a call yesterday from someone who was in a very similar position. Telling a customer that they need a full door replacement is a high-pressure sales tactic that is used by some sales reps to get their door numbers up for the month. Of course, without seeing the door (PM me some photos!) I can't know for sure. Doesn't hurt to get a second opinion :)

  • +1

I already have a garage door with remotes, I wanted to know, if it can be automated, as in auto shut down after certain time period, or remote check from a phone app etc ?
We have forgotten to shut out garage a couple of times.

    • Do you know what the model of your garage opener is? Depending on the unit, there's a few different smartphone options available.

  • Rep. Curbside question..

Our garage door makes a heck of a lot of squeeking noises when rolling up. Is that as simple as silicon spraying the rollers or something more sinister?

    • I think that means it's not quite square in the guides. I am NOT an expert.

    • Hey mate!

Squeaking just means it needs some love. Clunks and bangs are usually bad noises to hear. Hit the hinges with some silicon based lubricant, and clean out the tracks with an old rag. If the door hasn't been serviced in a while (12-24 months is the recommended timeframe) I'd recommend getting someone out to look at the springs. Over time they can de-tension and slack off, which causes the opener to wear away faster.

In some cases, it can be related to a guide issue. Run your eye over the guides and make sure they haven't been dinted or warped at all. Sometimes this can rub on the door, creating extra load for the opener.

        Legend!

        • Happy to help! :)

  • Hi OP. I was just about to buy the Bunnings Chamberlain Opener for $269. It only does 13m2 and has 2 remotes. I do like the fact that I can walk back into Bunnings if something goes wrong. How does the 5 yr warranty on your product work?

    • +2

Hey mate, if you have an issue with the motor it's a simple as a quick call. We'd be able to identify the problem over the phone and 9/10 times have a new opener on the road to you the same day. Once you get the new motor, swap the old one out and we'd sort out the motor coming back to us.

Full disclosure, we're still running a 0% fail rate on the Roller Opener. They're based upon a unit that boasts .3% fail rate across Australia, however, so I believe it'll be some time before we do get a warranty issue :)

As for the Chamberlain opener - As a general rule of thumb, you want extra power where you can get it. If you can save $30 and get a unit that squeezes out a little extra power, that's not a bad deal :)

      • +1

        Great!! Thanks.

        • Happy to help! :)

  • What do all the different buttons on the remote do?

    • +1

      Short answer, the same job.

Long answer, they operate as an O/S/C (Open / Stop / Close) button. You can program them into four different doors or gates, provided they are compatible. So for example, you could have the top left and right buttons operate two different garage doors, the bottom left operate your gate and the bottom right operate an alarm system that has a receiver wired into it.

    • -1

The doors go side to side as well as up and down.

  • Hi,

Just wondering if you can send me through your recommended garage door suppliers in Brisbane? Preferably Northside.

    Cheers,

    • +1

Hey mate, try Luke from 100% Garage Doors and Gates on 0448 104 180. He's up in Radcliffe, as close as I could get to Northside. Just let him know that National Garage has referred you onto him!

  • Can this be installed in semi-outdoor with occasionally rain splash on it?

    • +1

Hey mate, would not recommend at all. The motor's warranty doesn't cover water damage at all.

You would need to weld up a little alcove for it so even if the rain was goin' sideways, it wouldn't hit the unit.
The other option is that you get the ATA GDO8v3! It was originally designed with sand-proofing in mind for Saudi Arabia, which also had the side benefit of making the unit waterproof. You can check that one out here.

      • +1

Thanks a lot, the waterproof model it is!

        • Happy to help! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

  • Hi OP - Got a external gate motor and a garage door motor set up already (both different brands). now I’m looking to automate both of them using IFTTT and geofencing.

    What options do you have?

    • +2

      Hey mate,

Sounds complex! The only add-on accessory in the market (to my knowledge) that even uses IFTTT is the GoGoGate2, found here. I've got limited experience with IFTTT, however, there's a video on how to link it up. There does appear to be a limitation of 1x GoGoGate2 per IFTTT account, not sure if this is something you'd be able to work around.

We unfortuantely don't stock the GoGoGate2, but I believe you can grab them from the site I've linked. Hope this helps!

    • +1

If you're willing to do a bit of DIY, these doors can easily be controlled with a $30 Sonoff Pro - which can in turn be controlled by IFTTT.

  • +8

All store reps can learn from this post.

    • I try my best!

  • Generally, how much should it cost to have this installed? Just need an idea to negotiate with my local person (Canberra).

    • Hello there! Generally speaking, the price ranges from about $120 - 165. It really depends on the area and what's involved. Some jobs are an absolute breeze whilst others have so little side room it requires removing the door from the opening to fit it in. If you can reach, measure the room from the side of the door to the wall. That'll give you the side room, which you can give to your installation company. Anything over 45mm will fit and over 90mm there's enough room for a party.

Depending on the size of the company, there might be a requirement to inspect the site first to make sure that a scenario like above doesn't exist. Larger companies might have a default flat rate on installation as well. Just make sure you have more than the 45mm, however, as if you have less you might still be charged a call out fee for the technician to go to the site.

  • Hi OP

    Two questions:

    1. I'm looking at your safety beams. We have a Steeline panel lift door - Model: ST50EVOB. Which if any, safety beam suits that?

and more generally on the earlier chat:
    2. On the range for the remotes, does it help if you make the aerial longer or is it length/frequency linked?

  • +1

    G'Day!

    1. Long story short: Merlin 774ANZ PE Beams. We unfortunately do not stock these fellows, but I'll PM you in about an hour with an answer on if we can source these in.

Long Story: It looks like the ST50EVOB is a rebranded Chamberlain motor, made by Merlin, rebranded for Steel Line. It looks like the manual makes reference to a PE beam system called "The Protector System". This could refer to either the 771ANZ or 774ANZ, but the 774ANZ beams are what you need due to being the most recent design.
    2. Absolutely. The length of an aerial is linked to the frequency it works on. There's an interesting discussion from a little over a year ago on the specific lengths you use for the MHz band you require. Generally speaking, to increase the range on the remotes you need to mount the aerial outside, so you're not fighting the door and brickwork.

  • which kit for a farm gate opener - approx. 12 ft wire mesh?

    • Hey mate, assuming it's a swing gate check out the ATA SGO1v4. It'll suit gates up to 4m wide and comes with two remote controls, so you won't have any issues at all. Make sure you check out the installation manual first, however, just to make sure you've got a big enough mounting point for it.

      • mounting point is typical cca pine post

        • Shouldnt be an issue, as long as you have the sideroom clearance :)

  • +1

What's the difference between this generic branded one and the Chamberlain at Bunnings, besides extra remotes and it's a little more expensive but a well known brand? https://www.bunnings.com.au/chamberlain-handylift-plus-2-0-g…

    • +3

Hey there Sergeant! That's a good question, well asked. This'll be a long-ish read, so I'll TL;DR as best I can. Sorry for the delayed reply as well, I've been on the phone due to the sale a fair bit this afternoon organizing a few installations.

      TL;DR

The Roller Opener is stronger, lifts bigger doors, has more safety features, packs a full diagnostic software suite, has a wider range of additional options (Battery backup, solar etc) and is from an Australian Company. Auto Openers has been around in Australia for some time. I feel like the term 'generic' would apply better to more Chinese companies, like Ding Ding (a manufacturer of gate control boards) :)

The Handylift is weaker, rated for smaller doors, has standard safety features, no diagnostic safety suite, standard accessories (no battery backup, no solar, no smartphone availability) and is from an American Company.

      The long version:
The Chamberlain Handy lift is a watered down, rebranded version of one of their MR openers. Merlin's done this a few times over the years, with the most recent being the STEVO series for Steel-Line Operators. If you have a look at their website you'll notice that Steel Line no longer advertise those openers, which they used to do back in 2017. The units are still in the market, with another OzBargainer enquiring on PE Beams on one further up.

The unit does a smaller door. As I mentioned to another OzBargainer today in PM'ing comparing these two units, it makes more sense to get more power where you can. For example, if you have a 12m² door I'd recommend that you go for the unit that offers more power despite both motors being able to handle it. The difference would be extraordinary, as the few N's of power would result in extra years of performance. The AO Roller Opener suits a 16.5m² door.

The additional accessories available between the units are very different. Oddly enough, Merlin has been removing the capability for battery backup from their units over the last year or two, which means that in a blackout you're unable to operate the door. This is a major issue for 'coffin' style garages where the garage door itself is the only point of access in or out. Should you have a blackout, you're without a car until the power comes back on. The AO Roller Opener does have the capability for a Battery Backup.

The power between the units is also very different. The Handylift comes in at 450N's of lifting power, with a requirement that the motor has PE Beams installed should the force exceed 400N. Not sure if this would come up at the time of a warranty request. The Roller Opener cracks along at 600N and whilst it has the capability for PE beams, no such requirement exists in the manual.

As for safety features, the Roller Opener also has Door Profiling. During the opening and closing of the garage door, the motor will monitor and adjust the power needed for each stage of opening and closing the door. There's also inbuilt diagnostic software on the opener that we can plug a computer into, that would tell us to the mm where a fault might lie. To my knowledge, Merlin has never rivalled the diagnostic capability. I also cannot find any mention of door profiling for the Chamberlain DIY range.

Finally, the remote controls themselves. This is going to be a bit of a weird one, but personally, I feel like the E950C sliding cover remote that Merlin offers just feels… Loose. There's a couple of reviews on the Merlin branded remote on eBay that you can read here. The casing for the Roller Opener remotes are a lot more durable, but don't have the sliding cover you see the Handylift has.

      Second (bonus) TL;DR
I guess at the end of the day, I could keep going on with specs and features. We've been in business for over ten years. I myself have been involved with National Garage for around… 8? 9 years? Personally, I'm planning on putting a Panel Opener on the house I'm building this year. I'm doing it because I like the blue color remotes and I know its reliable. Take that as you will :)

  • If you only had a wireless Keypad, I would jump on this deal.

    • I know, right? Unfortunately, this range of the Auto Openers motors doesn't have keypads (yet).

If you're dead set keen on them you could do something with a receiver and keypad to get it working on a keypad, but this is the best I've got for this brand at the moment :)

  • Hi GrecDeFreckle,

Could you please recommend someone for post code 5073?

    • Hi mate! Try Harry from Doors 'N More on 0416 029 033. He's tucked away in Dover Gardens and plenty of experience with these openers!

      • Appreciate Mate!

        • Happy to help! :)

  • Hi Rep.

Anybody to recommend for P/C 2444 Port Macquarie NSW area please mate.

    • G'Day mate, try giving Tommy from Port Macquarie Garage Doors a call on 6581 1350. He's a great installer who really knows his stuff! Just let him know National Garage referred you on and he'll look after you.

      • Cheers GrecDeFreckle.

I have a 5 year old B & D roller door that is making some banging noises in the door itself in both directions around the halfway point. Currently have an ATA GDO-6V2 which is much older than the door itself.
It is pulling the door up and down ok but is a little noisy. Also noticed that the ATA is not sitting at all square to the end of the roller door ie it is very close to the door at the top and a big space at the bottom.
Any thoughts?? Happy to get Tommy out from your recommendation for a service as I have some serious health issues. Or should I just buy one today off you and get him out to remove and install the new one. Any advice greatly appreciated bud.

        • To be honest, the GDO6v2 is a pretty hardy unit. It's getting on a little in age, but would be ok. Sitting off-centre is unusual, generally, you want that nice right-angle-to-the-door thing going on. Not overly great that the door is banging away, that's a definite indicator of needing service.

I'd say this is up to you.

The new motor comes out with a 5-year warranty and would be a bit quieter, but if you just want the door to pipe down a little I'd get him to do the service. The only real risk would be that the motor has moved off base and taken some damage over time from the extra strain. So if you got Tommy to do his service, you'd end up replacing the motor in 6-12 months anyway.

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Cheers
Thanks so much mate. Greatly appreciated advice. Will talk to Tommy and order new opener from you. Best Regards.

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Hi Again Rep.

Just spoke to Tommy and thanks sooo much as he is going to do the install for a great price.

Only 1 PROBLEM When I go to purchase from you on the above link I am being charged $25.00 for delivery even though I am an ebay Plus member.

Any thoughts to getting the free delivery price. Never had this happen before.

            • @homeport: Great to hear! Tommy's a standup guy.

As for the postage issue, bizarre. We offer free postage on everything, with the option of express post. Try selecting free postage? I think you might have the express post option selected.

              • @GrecDeFreckle: Hi Mate.

Just Checked with ebay reps and they looked into your postage requirements as a seller and it appears that you have checked north coast NSW and some other areas as offering express delivery only and it omits the free delivery option. They are about to send you some screenshots of their findings. I guess I am going to have to wait for the problem to be fixed at your end before I order. Was hoping to get it into todays mail but may miss out unless you can order an alternative form of payment. Hope this helps mate

                • @homeport: Give me… 10 minutes.

Edit: Took less than expected. Sorry about that, not sure what happened there! Give it a few minutes to update eBay side and we should be all ok.

                  • +2

                    @GrecDeFreckle: Yaaay

Glad we got that sorted and just purchased. Hopefully you may be able to get into todays mail????

Thanks again for all your advice and effort with me. The installer was blown away with the price that you are offering on these by the way.

Absolute pleasure doing business and for the heads up re the local installer they were extremely well priced for the service and replacement price. Will definitely recommend you to others up here.

                    Best regards

                    • +1

@homeport: Confirming it's been picked up by Fastway Couriers today - You'll see that early to mid next week.

Happy to help mate! Let me know if you need anything else in the future and we'll sort it out :)

                      • +1

                        @GrecDeFreckle: Hi Rep.

Just a quick update arrived today and being installed by Tommy Friday morning.

Great advice and service from you at National Garage very impressed. Will recommend up here for you.

                        Best Regards

                        • @homeport: Great to hear it's arrived so soon!
Enjoy the automated door mate, if you need anything else in the future just let me know and I'll be happy to help.
