  • Quickly hijacking the top comment:

You can either DIY this motor or arrange a local technician to come install it for you. If you want to DIY install, Auto Openers released a great video showing one of their technicians installing the unit from scratch. You can check that out here.

If you're wanting to have it installed, just let me know your postcode. I can recommend local, reliable garage door installers in your area for you to contact!

What is the usual charge for installation

      • +1

Hello! Depending on the area (competition always drives down the price a little) and complexity of the job (i.e. are there beams in the way?), I've seen anywhere from $150-190.

  • Hi Grec
Just a question, I purchased the panel opener on your last sale and it comes with 3 x blue remote openers (black frame, blue buttons), can you link to an additional remote as I need to buy an extra one.
    Thanks.
I saw one for $65 or something but was hoping for cheaper than that if they exist

    • +1

Hi mate! I saw the notification for your comment and recognized the username :) I've PM'd you our number!

      • Awesome thanks for your help!!

    • Ouch $65 for extra/replacement remotes. Are there alternatives?
That makes me think twice now, my current one can be replaced by ~$10 ones on ebay.

      • At the moment, we don't really have alternatives (not until someone develops one!).
Off eBay we can always go a little cheaper, however.

  • Does this unit have external connectors? I use a aeotec zwave garage door opener that uses 2 wires to trigger an open and close function remotely.

    • Hi mate, the unit definitely has external inputs for wiring in accessories! Sounds like you have a wall button?

      • Thanks Grec, similar requirement to the wall button. The aeotec is part of a zwave automation system which opens my garage door as I'm approaching the house based on gps location and a few other triggers.
Worked well on the marantec unit I had till the motor died recently…

        • +3

If it wired into a Marantec, would definitely wire into this fellow! If you also take a photo of the way it's wired into the Marantec terminals I can let you know how to wire it into this unit.

On an aside, I've found you guys on OzBargain to be really quite unique. I've never seen the level of technological automation anywhere else, like GeoFencing or IFTTT integration with garage doors until I started posting deals here!

  • I purchase this on the last deal. I am far from a handy man, but I manage to replace my old one (Glidermatic GTS) with this one. This unit is much quieter than my old one. Highly recommended. The only challenge I have is to source the bracket to hold the unit. I went to Burning and Miter10 and they both do not stock any type of bracket which I can use to hold the unit. I end up making my own bracket from aluminium which is less than ideal.

Grec can you suggest a supplier or somewhere we can source the bracket? Thanks in advance.

    • Hey mate, do you mean for the unit to mount to the roof, or to hold the unit on?

We have perforated angle that's designed to hold the unit on - I can send you a photo if you want.

      • Hi Grec,

Yes, I am after the perforated angle. If you have some, I will love to get some from you guys.

        Please PM me for details.

        • PM Sent :)

  • What's the expected life of the drive belt? I've always had chain drives. How much is a replacement belt?

    • Belt drives have been around for a number of years (9-10?). The only time I've ever heard of a belt snapping is when it's been put onto a door that's far too heavy for it, or the tension was ratcheted up to a ludicrous point.

The belt has a steel core inside, but we're still waiting on replacement belts to really become a thing. At this point in time, we're seeing the same strength and longevity of chain drives, without the upkeep required. Chain drives also tended to sag a little over time, which the belts are not doing. Replacement belts are normally around the $70 mark (inc GST / delivered)

      • Ok thanks, more concerned with becoming brittle or stretching beyond the adjustment range.

        • No, that's not a problem that occurs :) You'll be all ok in that regard!

  • +1

Also just watched the video, the sticker says the after 3000 cycles the the opener will beep and flash indicating that it is due for a service. What is required and how do you cancel it? 3000 cycles is only about 2 years if opened and closed 4 times a day (2 cars leaving and arriving, assuming a cycle is open/close).

    • That's correct, around two years you'd need to get the unit serviced. A technician would come to the site and update the software in the motor, download diagnostic information and check to see the number of times it's been obstructed, if it's been needing extra grunt to push past certain points (which could indicate door or guide damage) and make sure the units in general ok.

They'd then clean out the guide tracks, re-tension the door springs and get the door nicely balanced again so the opener wouldn't need to work as hard. The technician would also inspect the door for signs of wear and tear, such as the hinges, rollers, cable drum and the door cabling itself.

Basically, a good door service does for a garage door what a good mechanic does for your car. It makes it do better, last longer and operate more optimally. Most manufacturers recommend door servicing every 12 months with a majority actually making regular servicing part of the warranty conditions.

      • I service my own car, and also my garage door opener. It's coming on 20 years old now, and some of the nylon gearing is starting to show its age. There are replacement kits available, but I think its had a fair run and time for a new unit.

But I don't want to buy a replacement that forces me to have a contractor come out and need service call every 2 years. Does the manual include the button combination for clearing the service flag?

        • Gotcha. There is a way of removing the flag if you're competently self servicing, which it sounds like you are given it's lasted 20 years. Normally it's done via the PG3 programmer unit (the diagnostic updater tool).

        • I installed one on the weekend and was not too hard.
I was also interested in this point. So without the programmer we cannot turn off the warnings? Will it keep flashing/beeping until serviced?
Similar to pete not really interested in paying someone every 2 years to service it. How does this affect warranty?

I also couldn't easily find the perforated bars but I ended up using what was there on the replaced unit.

          • @nghori: I'd strongly suggest you get the door serviced, similar to getting a car serviced there's more to worry about than just losing warranty. Without the annual or bi-annual service, the springs are at risk of shredding. There's also the risks inherent with self-servicing should you have the incorrect tools.

It is a condition of warranty that the Roller Opener & Panel Opener be:
            a. Serviced within 18 months of installation
            b. The motor has been serviced within 18 months of installation and thereafter every two years

You can work out the dates to only have to get two services done. Currently, this works out in your favour compared to other warranty conditions.

For example, the Merlin MR855EVO / MR655EVO units have a requirement that the unit is professionally installed, serviced in the 3rd and 5th year. There's also a clause around if the door is binding, sticking or out of balance then you are unable to use it until serviced by the authorized technician again.

The unit will continue to flash and beep unless you either remove the flag manually or with the programmer.

  • My GDO is a chain drive and has a round pole with exposed chain. How does this unit interface with the existing chain as it doesn't look like the one in the video?

    • +1

This would replace the entire drive rails and all.

      • Thank you.

    • +1

Exactly as Pete said, you would replace all of your old hardware and update it with new!

  • Appreciate your quick responses, but apart from the additional remote, how is your opener better than others on eBay like this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Garage-Roller-Door-Automatic-Ope… for $160.94 delivered (with the PURCHASE5 code).

    • +1

Give me a sec Pete, I'll have a full breakdown for you in a sec. There's a $110 difference, so I feel like me simply saying "In every way possible" won't cut it.

      • lol have an upvote for that comment

        • Finished the writeup!

There's a reason we don't sell the cheaper stuff you see online. Sure, you can make some margin out of it. It's not the best, though.

    • +3

Apologies for the incoming wall of text. I'm going to pick on that unit in particular, just apply and replace the specs as required with the other cheap units.

You are really going to get what you pay for here - Cheap motor, dubious warranty and lack of history

Alrighty, thought that motor looked familiar. It's a non-branded Eikia unit, the Eikia-800 model to be exact. It's made by Shenzhen Zhongtian Door Co which appears to be sold for about $55 US per unit according to Alibaba. As that's the listed price it would be very easy to come in under that price through negotiation. If alarm bells haven't started ringing… :)

The actual eBay listing is a hot mess. The description starts for a gate opener and rapidly switches between describing a roller opener and an overhead opener. This means that your after sales service would be limited in the event of an issue with your garage door opener. I'm not sure how'd you go on spare parts availability, either. It appears that the seller is based in China, which would more than likely mean they're a wholesaler shipping out bulk random goods with no real specialization. The item has been listed on eBay since Jun 2018, but only started selling around the end of October / start of November, which lines up with the three price adjustments at the start of October. If this was a slow enough mover, they might not sell them again meaning the limited after sales service has disappeared.

We've been around for 10+ years in the garage door and gate industry exclusively, so you're guaranteed after sales service.

      Moving onto the specs!

      • The Eikia-800 has a 800N drive, suited for 12m² doors, the rail is either 3m / 3.3m / 3.6m / 3.9m long for a max height of 2.1m high, features auto close (with no need for PE Beams), obstruction detection and a steel belt rail. Battery backup appars to be available but I cannot find one available for sale. I've noticeed that the unit is also advertised as being a KENNER, EIKIA-800 and Vevor Flupke unit.

      • The Panel Opener has a 1000N drive, suited for 16.5m² doors, the rail is 3.2m long to suit a 2.4m high door with the option of extension rails, features auto close (with the requirement of PE-Beams for safety concerns), obstruction detection, a steel belt rail and the option for battery backup, PE beams, an inbuilt diagnostic system, Australian based company.

Just a quick note here. The motor having an auto close function with no PE Beams included is pretty concerning. It's a legal requirement to have PE Beams installed in America due to the sheer amount of pet and child injuries. Having an auto reverse when the door hits something is great, but in the event your $50 motor has those sensors fail you probably want a backup. PE Beams shoot an IR beam across the doorway - If broken when in operation, the door will auto reverse to open. If broken before operation, the door will refuse to move.

      Finally, the warranty

I think they're going to get you here. On the eBay page they've got this strange little warranty: "5-year motor and 1-year parts"
If that's what I think it is, you'll be screwed after 12 months. Merlin did this a long time ago on their Security+ range of motors, which you can see in an old manual here if you're wanting to check it laid out properly. It was a tactic were you can advertise a 5 year warranty "On the motor". This meant that the DC motor (Which never fails) is covered for 5 years, but the clutch, electronics and other internal gearing is not covered after 2 years, which is when they start wearing away.

      Summary

Crikey mate, she's cheap. You can either automate your door with a weaker unit with an (effective) 12 month warranty, or get a 5 year warranted motor for $100 more that'll actually last.

      • I appreciate the time taken to answer my questions.

        • Happy to help mate.

I know that was a random opener that you found, but even if you don't buy this deal, my personal recommendation is to avoid the cheaper gear. ATA, Auto Openers, Merlin and B&D are the major brands I would recommend in Australia, simply due to the low amount of issues we have vs the volume of items sold.

  • Currently building a steel-framed house and want to DIY the garage door opener. Are there any tips to share regarding affixing this garage door opener to the metal frames that line the garage roof?

    • +2

Check out the DIY installation video - Gives you a great visual representation on how to do it :)

Your mounting point is going to be around the 3.1-3.2m mark, given the length of the rail. I would recommend that you either ensure there is a noggin for you to fix the garage door opener to around this point, or create a point between them on the exterior. I've seen an install where a square board of hardwood, at least 40-50cm each side, was screwed at 4 points into two different ceiling joists in the roof. The motor was then fixed into the board.

      Hope this helps!

      • That helps a bundle, many thanks! The tip about installing a board that fits across the railings will definitely be an option.
