So this is, at very best, a 2% bonus?

I have to say after using my Ubank account overseas I'll never go back to the Travelex.

    • Hi there, we're going to China for a couple weeks later this year, what can you tell me about this Ubank? We are just starting to research the whole money/card thing now and already have a 28degrees card.

This article was a headsup too.

If you want a good rate at the time of the purchase 28 degrees is great.

If you want to lock in a certain exchange rate now rather than take your chance at the time then you want something like Citibank global currency account.

Travelex may charge no commission because they are robbing you blind in the spread

  • Not really a deal if no one knows the rates…

  • I am sorry to say that Travelex is not a good one to get the best out of exch. rate. When you have leftover in your foreign currency, just simply head down to CBD to get a decent money changer.

E.g: In Melbourne CBD, the place that lots of people going is United exchange.

Travelex is like the AMP for money changers. Exorbitant spreads and ZERO VALUE to consumers. There are lots of good money changers around that have small spreads. Not this bunch.

  • Anyone know where to get rid of Guatemalan currency? Their law seems to prevent currency sellers buying it back (unless that's BS)?

  • Travel Money Oz don't have the best rates but they do offer to buy back unused currency that you exchanged with them after you return at a preferable rate. With this you can get a small amount of cash before you go knowing that you only need enough money until you get to the first ATM overseas. And you can sell up to that small amount when you return at a reasonable rate. The spread is larger than others but it's a small amount of money and convenient.

Does anyone know which other exchange services will buy back unused currency?

Pretty much every money changer will both buy and sell currencies. I recently sold unused JPY back into AUD which was simple and easy.

      • Yep, you're right. I should have worded that differently.

What I meant to say was does anyone know of FX dealers who buy back at preferable rates rather than the board rate. I seem to remember years ago Westpac would buy back unused currency for the same rate they sold it for?
