No HDR :'( … so close!

    • -1

      20 more Hz, so close

    • +2

No point having HDR on a LCD without FALD. Will look like crap.

      • +1

You're right… the lack of full array local dimming is probably the reason it is both not more expensive, and the reason they didn't bother to add HDR support. Looks like a decent colour gamut at least?

        • The first ultrawide HDR FALD LCDs are being released this year and will cost $3k+.

If you are willing to calibrate it, this monitors sRGB colour accuracy is professional grade (below 1.1 dE). It is a very good display.

          • @Ryballs: Wow that projected pricing is rediculous when you consider 65 inch oleds at 3k

            • @BuDWiZe: Almost no one buys gaming monitors relatively speaking.

The vast majority of PC gamers use 1920x1080. Then the three percent that aren't using 1920x1080 buy all the cheaper gaming monitors and then the ?? percentage who are willing to buy the most expensive kit buy the IPS with FALD that is required for good HDR using IPS.

    • "Quantum dot" sounds way more futuristic than HDR anyway.

Took the plunge … will upgrade to an HDR one in a few years time :|
My current Samsung UHD590 is getting a bit long in the tooth … time for some 34" goodness :)

  • Just incase anyone needs it like i do, it does not appear to support VESA mounts

    • +10

Yes, it does support VESA (either 100x100mm, and 200x200mm) mount. The details is on page 17 of the manual. You can download the manual on this webpage.

And, reddit has a webpage about the topic.

      • +2

alrighty i take it back, i was only looking at the pictures, and it didn't appear to support it. Didn't realise that samsung throw in an adapter. Neat! Just so my comment doesn't confuse anyone, maybe throw it in the description as well

      • Yep. I own one of these and have it mounted on a Kogan monitor arm. Great monitor.

  • no usb-c?

    • +1

Not on this model. However, the C34J791 model does have Thunderbolt 3 ports, which is downward compatible with USB-C.

      • Thanks, that’s the one I’m waiting for…

      • downward compatible with USB-C.

USB (2, 3, 3.1) & Thunderbolt can use physical USB-C connectors, but their protocols are unrelated.

        • I'm confused, isn't it both support DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

          • @O O: USB-C connector may (but not necessarily does) support USB, Thunderbolt and many Alternate Modes - DP, MHL, HDMI, etc. (Regardless of connector) Thunderbolt itself can support (ie. encapsulate) Alternate Modes, one of which is DP.

  • How compatible is this with gsync?

    • +3

Reddit link that has a spreadsheet about Nvidia/Freesync Compatability

Here is the result from rtings.com

We have tested the Samsung CF791 with NVIDIA's new FreeSync drivers, on an NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 Gb. Unfortunately, there were a few issues. With the refresh rate set to 100 Hz, there was no signal when launching any Fullscreen games. It worked fine when we set the refresh rate to 60 Hz. It appears that NVIDIA ignores the window's refresh rate though, as the test pattern was then tear-free up to 100 Hz. We retested the CF791 on a Radeon card, and did not have the same issues.

    • If you have an Nvidia card and want an ultrawide monitor then just save up for the like of x34p ($1080). Even 2 units of the same freesync model may behave differently, full compatibility is not guaranteed even for the certified g-sync compatible monitors. It took me a few attempts before I gave up and decided to just buy a g-sync monitor to enjoy my games.

  • Just be careful if you plan to use FreeSync as a quick search yields quite a few complaints about this monitor's implementation of FreeSync:

  • why is it so hard to buy a monitor these days? so many compatibility issues

    • -2

      Freesync = AMD Gsync = Nvidia…

      Not hard.

      • +2

You know Nvidia opened up support for freesync on some monitors right?

        • The support is there for practically all freesync monitors. You just have to manually turn it on for monitors that aren't on Nvidia's official list.

While there can be some compatibility issues on a case by case basis for freesync monitors most good ones work fine.

        • Gsync supports vesa sync

Not buying anything from this mob again!

  • +1

Would this monitor be too big to sit roughly 2 feet from at a desk? Specifically for gaming.

I've got a 27" AOC 1440p 144hz monitor but the image quality sucks. Looking to replace it.

    • +1

Nope. I had a 28inch and upgraded to a 34inch ultra wide. 34inch ultra wide is the same height as a normal 28inch screen, its just wider and more like having 2 screens.

    • 34" ultrawide is a wider 27"

So if you are fine the 27" monitor atm and have enough desk spack for a wider monitor, then you should be fine with this too

  • Thinking of using this for just general browsing and workspreadsheets, paired with my hp spectre x360. any thoughts on this combo? overkill or would the laptop struggle with outputting to this screen?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks, just in time I'm in the market for an ultrawide!

  • quite curious if i'd have issues running it on an ordinary macbook pro 13 without a graphics card?

2016 macbook pro i5, through hdmi, anyone on that setup with one of these ultrawides?
