  • Can these be modified to play SNES/NES games?

  • +13

A second hand ps3 could do so much more and maybe cheaper too

    • Can it play PS1 games?

      • +10

All PS1 games. Just pop in the disc or you can buy select titles on PSN. Also upscales to FHD 1080p unlike the Classic which does 720p. They look fairly decent.

        • +1

          wireless too

      • +2

        yes

      • mine sure can

    • They do chew a relatively massive amount of power though, even when doing bugger all.

This thing draws like 5W while a regular PS3 just sitting on the menu screen will be pulling down 130W. PS3 slim would be much better there but still 50-90W.

    • +1

True, but the issue for us Australian's is that they'd be PAL versions. I still have my PS3 to play my PS1 games, but this is a cheap easy way to play NTSC on a HDTV.

If you really want to play PS1 games properly you want a NTSC PS1 console and a CRT tv.

      • +1

Actually some of the games on the Playstation Classic, for reasons nobody can fathom, are the PAL versions - and they really suffer for it. Obviously with modding that isn't a problem, but the same could be said for the ps3.

        • Spitballing here, but maybe emulating PAL framerate is less demanding? or certain region versions had cheaper licensing for some reason? If anyone actually knows, let us know.

    • How much would all the games cost? Are they all on the PSN store or do you need to buy the discs second hand also? That could be expensive.

  • Is this lower than the standard price?

    • +3

$150 RRP but many places dropped it to $99 not long after release. This is the lowest it has gone so far.

      • currently there are about $40 in the US - so until the price tanks there then this is about the lowest you'll see them for a while, I guess.

        • A few places in Canada have them for $29.99 CAD at the moment (~$31.70 AUD). I suspect we might continue to see them drop here too, especially if Sony's demand estimations were equally skewed for both regions.

  • +3

When you mod these with bleemsync they work great. Haven't noticed any issues with game playback once changing console to NTSC

After all the bad reviews this vid made me hit the buy button :)

    • Epic eye rolls!

  • +4

I can see these dropping below $50 mark. Massive fail of classic consoles

  • +2

    Nah. It'll be $49 soon

  • I'm here for the mod comments.

Waiting for SNES mini on sale 😏

    • +1

Did you miss the Kmart sale? They had them for $79 the other week.

      • Can’t find any in BNE

    • It'll disappear soon. It's out of production like the NES is.

  • +4

    $40 and I'll bite.

    • +1

Yep that is also the right number for me too

      • Delivered, as well.

  • +2

Destruction derby, metal gear solid, abe's odyssey, twisted metal… wow nostalgic

    • Metal Gear Solid 😍

      • +3

        Without DualShock controls 🤮

  • No need for speed, or gran turismo.

    No deal.

    Obviously licencing, but still.

    • +3

Gran Turismo is owned by Sony themselves! More like obviously lazy

      • Lazy? You do realise that once the emulator (which they stole from open source developers) was running on the hardware, it’s just a matter of placing the ISO/CUE/BIN on the device. There’s literally no work involved.

This is compared to Nintendo who actually tweak the shit out of their own emulator for most accuracy.

        Nintendo = gold
Sony = shit stain of the gaming industry

        • Oh don't worry I'm well aware of how the software was handled by one guy on work experience with no QA testing :P

      • +2

If it has licensed music tracks, it complicates things. If the license has an expiry, you have to acquire the licenses again in order to sell it.

      • +2

Gran Turismo is owned by Sony, but the car licenses sure aren't.

Wouldn't legally be able to be sold without re-licensing the cars.

Same reason Need For Speed just can't simply "be added".

Lots of PC games have been pulled from Steam for the same reason (music), and only re-added once songs have been patched out.

  • +2

It burns paying full rrp on launch and still not opening.

Atleast Amazon gave me some credit as a good gesture when I asked after its big initial drop.

  • Great deal. I'm going to look into camelcamelcamel. Thanks for posting

  • out of curiosity since I could theoretically play these games on a PC using an emulator, and a joystick, is there any advantage of buying this?
I never owned a PS, so I am not nostalgic about the same
    just wondering

    • No advantage.

    • The advantage is an inferior experience since the PC emulator will run them closer to native PS1 performance

    • Convenience and genuine feel of the original PS1 controller.

    • Novelty and an all in one package that doesn't require configuring. Basically plug and play.

With emulation, you have to fiddle with an array of settings and they need to differ depending on the game.

      • -3

        With emulation

        This is emulation.

        • Why the vote downs? This is a fact.

          • @PainToad: Official emulation as opposed to you figure it out yourself.

            • -1

              @lostn:

              Official emulation as opposed to

Lol. Sony used the free open source PCSX ReARMed emulator. The exact same emulator used by RetroPie.

So the reason for the vote down was the voters were ignorant. Cool.

              • @PainToad: Yes, and if Sony are using it, then it's official.

                • @lostn: Grasping at straws.

Point is, the Classic is no different to using the exact same emulator on your phone, PC or Raspberry Pi . It’s the same emulator.

    • Using the original sony controllers is a big advantage. Plug and play.

Plug and play hacking too with a usb stick.

  • +4

Waiting for N64 mini to come

  • Good old days!

  • So what's the better emulator - this or a snes mini?

    • -2

A Raspberry Pi or an old Optiplex. Or even a Wii.

    • -1

SNES mini. There are even comparison videos showing it running noticeably better than the PS classic.
