Jetstar Overseas Sale, Various Aus Cities (SYD to Queenstown, NZ in Ski Season from $278 Return)

880

Morning all,

Been hunting for cheap airfares to Queenstown, NZ direct for the August/September period and managed to grab a two return tickets for $289 each return plus bags.
Total fare was about $705 for two people with a 20kg bag each, paid via Jetstar with credit card.
Sensational deal if you need to get down there for some Aug/Sep powder.

Considering on Wednesday the cheapest way we were considering was $250 to Christchurch return (plus bags), requiring a drive down to Queenstown from 1:00am, this is definitely a winner in my eyes.

Other destinations from Sydney include:

Ho Chi Minh City
Travel Dates: 30 April 2019 - 28 June 2019, 23 July 2019 - 17 Sept 2019 & 10 Oct 2019 - 9 Dec 2019
Economy from $209 E/W, Business from $529 E/W.

Christchurch
Travel Dates: 24 July 2019 - 16 Sept 2019
Economy from $145 E/W

Aukland
Travel Dates: 24 July 2019 - 17 Sept 2019
Economy from $145 E/W

I expanded my search to all other Australian cities, and there is a wealth of additional destinations, including Japan, Singapore and South East Asia.

Bon Voyage and have a great Thursday all,

Very nice price to Vietnam. Thanks OP.

  • I see Gold Coast to Queenstown is $323 return. Good deal.

The prices look good until you add $57 per passenger each way for carry-on luggage. Then they're much the same as everyone else's.

    • +1

      haha theres always one.

My dates for two people and bags with Air NZ were $940 during that buggy mess of a Click Frenzy on Tuesday.
      Without discount, they're $1,100.

$705 isn't even in the same ballpark.

    • Depends how much stuff you take. We went last sept using carryon. We wore ski jacket on plane otherwise it was easy enough to avoid need for luggage.

      • Holy smokes did you stay under 7kg? I like to think I pack light but would probably be stretched to fit civilian and ski clothes ski and travel accessories into that.

I know they often turn a blind eye but have seen enough cases of people getting blindsided by it I'm a little nervous now.

This year there has been a crackdown on carry on weights. I'd assume you'd get called on it these days. Worth a google to see if people have had issues on your particular routes though.

        • Yep 6.9kg few items in pockets ha. Osprey packs are great!

    • I agree, I’ve flown return to NZ on air nz, emirates etc for $350-400 return many times

    • Carry on is free for starter fare. You’re looking at the plus tab

      • Ooops, I meant checked luggage.

If I'm going to be over there for a week or so, I'm going to want to take more than just a few t-shirts.

        • +2

I've seen backpackers wearing an entire wardrobe onto the plane .

          • +1

@troyww: I’ve seen skiers wear ski boots and helmets on planes!
I’ve often had to wear my ski jacket stuffed with camera lenses to get the weight under limits. Not much fun in a Brisbane summer flying to nh!

    • Also don't Jetstar now charge an additional $50 for sports gear on top of the luggage costs?

      • +1

Yes, and the weight comes off your total baggage allowance even though you paid $50 -$60 for it!

  • How is their business class to Vietnam?
Is the aircraft and seat space alot bigger?

    • +3

Jetstar’s business class is more like premium economy then a full service carriers business class. The seats are bigger though and the aircraft they use (787) is a lot larger then the a320 they use domestically.

    I'm getting SYD-Queenstown for $278 return! Dates I used was 2/8-10/8

    • Yup, you're correct! I've updated the description.
      SYD - Queenstown = $169pp
      Queenstown - SYD = $109pp

  • Damn! no Sydney to Japan sales

  • Is $454 pp return from Syd to Ho Chi Minh with luggage good?

    • few more dollars to business class

      • +1

It’s like $300 more each way for business class.. $600 is not a few dollars.

    • I paid $350pp in their last sale from Melbourne with luggage and front seating/entertainment.

  • Any tips on accommodation, ski lift passes and car hire for a family of 4? (potentially 2 x families of 4)?
Crazy that skiing in NSW is the same price as travelling to Queenstown

    • Staying in Queenstown is crazy expensive. If you can find a place in nearby Frankton (fair warning - it's close to the airport) or further out of town it will be cheaper.

If you want a break day from the snow, the areas around Queenstown and towards the south-west are absolutely fantastic for a day trip - good roads and beautiful mountains everywhere you look.

    • Usually Petrol is approx $1.9/L and diesel is $1.4/L and 1 aud = 1 nzd approx as well.
try and work out how much will you be driving and what is daily hire rate difference between petrol and diesel car.

    • is skiing in Queenstown better than in NSW though?

      • +1

Depends. I went over in July. First 2 days were icey coral rubbish. Day 3 had 52cm of snow over night. Clear skies during the day. Best skiing of my life. Meanwhile in Oz it was Blizzard of OZ, so missed that, not sure how it compared. But people and scenery were awesome. Also the terrain is a bit more advanced, with better off piste options. So for those reason…DO IT!

    Departing: Perth
    Arriving: All

"We don’t have any deals from Perth today"

    :(

Times like this I wish the Amex Platinum Edge still included a free domestic flight, so I could combine it with eastern states only deals like this.

  • Worth joining Club Jetstar?

    • It’s worth it if you’re already buying tickets because for me signing up on the spot saved me $40 or so because even though it was $50 to join I saved $20 or so on each ticket for my boyfriend and I and 15 or 20 percent off my luggage.

You just have to remember to cancel the auto renewal before the year is up if you don’t want to be charged again. I rarely fly with Jetstar now so the $50 isn’t worth it for me to renew as Its unlikely I’ll get to use the benefit.

      • Same here, might fly once a year with them. I will keep it in mind, cheers.

  • OP, what dates did you book the queenstown trip for? Ive been looking for a sale. Tried around mid september but cheapest i found on this sale was 484$.

    • Mid to late August from Sydney.
Edit: I see you're from SA. No sale fares other than Ho Chi Minh in this current sale from Adelaide.

      • Don't bother with Jetstar from ADL if you have boards/ skis. I flew Emirates/ Qantas return to CHC for around $300 (with 2 snowboards and gear) via Sydney. Jestar was $290, but then + bags $30, plus boards (at $30 per leg!) Pass!

Queenstown unfortunately wont line up from ADL without an overnight stay.

  • Nothing from MEL to Japan :(

    • How depressing.

  • $120 return to bring my skis? Shame! Pretty good deal but AirNZ typically do something similar.

    • My advice would be try to get 1 redemption flight with baggage (business class even better as baggage is HUGE). Put all baggage through on the business class, others get carry on only rates.Get a couple of lounge passes so all passengers use the lounges prior. Rock paper scissors who gets the busi class seat.

*I do this for domestic family ski trips. International would be harder, but with one seat required and NZ it's doable.
