  • Any idea what drive is inside?
I was wondering how these go running 24/7

    • Are you writing to them 24/7 or just inside a computer that's on 24/7?

I have schucked many drives and they all run great for years.

Edit. Only to store media on. Not writing to constantly.

      • No just as a backup hanging off a media pc.

I've got a NAS, but I thought this can hang off my media PC and do nightly backups of my NAS too.

    • It's probably a WD White 10TB hard drive.

      • I've been reading that the current 10TB white's aren't helium and can run quite hot. Would they still be recommended in a NAS over a standard red?

I'm tossing up between this and the 8TB, although this deal is currently best value per TB.

    • I have the WD 4TB Elements, it's plugged in externally below the desk. And a Seagate 4TB external drive too (forgot which model). The difference is, every time you enter the WD 4TB Elements drive after not using it for a while, you have to white as Windows scans the drive before it runs. While the Seagate ones remains always running in the background, so it's ready to use as soon as you enter the drive.

To fix this issue (not really an issue, probably a power saving feature, but I can't turn it off), I run Open Hardware Monitor, and have it set to save a log file of temperatures every minute or so on the WD drive. The program runs in startup, so the drive doesn't go into "sleep mode" because every xx seconds a very small log file is written to that drive.

    $27 / TB

    Good deal.

  • This is a good price. It dropped down to $250.18 + $25.75 ship on Amazon AU yesterday for a short window but went back up to $399 when stock was low.

  • +7

It's available via Amazon Au for $250 delivered (-5% cashrewards possibly) if one has a Prime membership

    • I checked this morning and I swear I saw $399!

      • 1-4 week despatch time unfortunately

        • So is amazon us

          • @[Deactivated]: but it's cheaper to buy from Amazon AU.

            • @gizmomelb: But either way, the postage is quoted at the same 1-4wk despatch

    • Ordered, thanks. Planning to shuck and put in my DS918+. We shall see how it goes

  • I currently use a normal 2.5" portable HDD connected via USB for storing media and iTunes library/etc… would this make much of an improvement in speed? Not sure if it's a 7200rpm drive.

    • +1

If it's just for playing media off of then why do you care about speed?

      • Forgot to mention managing my 700gb photo library and sync with my onedrive.

  • Do we pay GST on this? and if so can we claim it back via TRS if flying out of Australia?

    • +1

Just buy it through Amazon AU for $250 (this is inclusive of GST) and will be on the invoice from Amazon AU so yes you would be able to claim TRS

      • thanks! :)

      • +2

You can only claim if you purchase over $300 AUD

        • +1

FYI, you can combine receipts from the same ABN to reach the $300 threshold

    • Yes, I'd order via amazon.com.au

  • I'm seeing US$160???

    • that's the us link change to au amazon look at other sellers up comes amazon us at 250.18

      Total before tax: $173.20
Estimated tax to be collected: $17.32

      • should probably cancel it as it's cheaper to buy from Amazon AU.

      • Oh really? That's a bit cheeky.

The Seagate 10TB hub or this?? I'm just thinking if I should wait for the other deal to return…

    • If my info is correct, seagate one is 7200RPM and this one is 5400RPM. Plus this one requires an AU plug adapter. Im personally gonna wait for the seagate one since that one was 20 bucks cheaper.

      • -1

thanks mate, I also read someone on here mentioned the seagate one has some kinda hellium drive?!? Which somehow sounds more advanced that other "ordinary drives"… so I guess we should wait for the seagate deal if not in a hurry.

    • i read seagates are SMR drives, so read/write are hella slow. thats why no shucks seagates, only WD

  • AmazonUS is $232AUD plus $19.18 shipping but i think it’s free with prime. AmazonAus is $250.18AUD plus $20.66 shipping or free with prime, roughly around the same shipping time or so it says.

  • 6TB WD also available for $156 AUD GST Inclusive Free delivery for Prime Members - sold by Amazon US via Amazon AU and is available to ship straight away…
