Love our IKEA Kitchen. Was fun planning it, fun installing it and is now fun using it! Highly recommended… especially with 50 months interest free!

Just not fun paying for it. :)

Not completely "interest free". $99 Annual fee applies so it'll be $495 over 50 months.

    • thats a fee, not interest. :-P
Also very standard for "interest free" deals. My GEM card does the same thing.

      • Standard but it shouldn't be ignored. $99 a year is like around 2%pa for a $5000 loan.

  • It was indeed fun but my 4-month old Ikea kitchen literally collapsed on me just 2 days ago; as the entire kitchen cabinets on the wall is hung on a single rail, which is screwed on to the studs.

There were only 4 studs across the horizontal rail so basically the whole thing was hung on 4 screws only, no wonder it collapsed.

I'm curious to hear what other people's experiences are?

    • Sounds like you need to have a chat with whoever installed it for you!

      • indeed I am! but the more I inspect it, I'm not sure what else could be done differently! There were only 4 studs and the rails only allows 1 screw per stud!

Could still be one of a few things… what length & gauge screws were used for instance? Were the studs capable of holding whatever screw used? Quite a few variables.

          • @SteveAndBelle: Finished our bathroom reno last night and I replaced all the fixtures that were provided for the cabinets, vanity unity and mirrors. Definitely weren't up to scratch even the plumb wasn't up to standard. Still came out on top.

And I'd be having a chat to who installed as that's terrible.

          • @SteveAndBelle: yeah agreed with the variables but with only 4 screws, can 4 screws to studs really be strong enough to hold the rail to the wall?

I spoke to Ikea who said there should be a screw every 30cm, and I'm like there's no houses with studs every 30cm.

I could only find one of the screws, and that screw broke in the wall so I couldn't even see how long the screw was.

I wonder if its a design fault (railing only allowing 4 screws to be used) or an installation fault?

@lawyerz: Yeah not sure sorry. Pretty crap it happened though. Let us know what happens after the discussion with the installer.

I did our entire Kitchen myself but we're spoiled as we have solid timber walls so I didn't need to use the rail system at all, I just screwed every cab straight into the wall wherever I wanted! God bless 115 year old houses :)

@SteveAndBelle: yeah thanks! Im hoping to get it resolved :( it breaks my heart just looking at it. At the very least I wasn't using the kitchen at that time, imagine if i was boiling water or cooking with oil etc.

        • If I'm doing it myself I would cut out a bit of the plasterboard and install extra horizontal studs across where the rail will go. That way you can put as many screws as you like on the rail.

          • @FloatingPoint: yeah i feel like this is really the only way it can be secure. the cabinet maker/assembler won't normally do this though I believe.

            • @lawyerz: Ha, no they definitely wont! We sold a custom-built house soon after it was completed and took a massive financial hit in the process because every trade involved did half-jobs like this. Been there, done that! Never again. DIY forever… even if it is illegal as I know I can do a far better & safer job than what all trades performed on our build. Frightening… especially the electrical, far out. I shudder when I think back to that place. Not a cheap build either.

    • Should of also used some heavy duty wall anchors to help distibute the load. Lazy installer!

      • you reckon the installer should have installed wall anchors and screwed into the drywall as well? will the drywall hold?
