  • Can you vouch for the joybuy covers because you have them? I’ve been waiting for Kogan to update their excellent one to support the new waterproof paper white but still no changes.

Appreciate if you could provide a link specifically to the one you recommend?

    • +3

Completely different products. This is e-ink for reading only.

      • +21

yeah what an odd post. Thought maybe it was waterproof too but that's not the case.

Hell I bought a bag of potatoes for a few bucks the other day, also better deal than kindle.

    • So you didn't buy it in Australia?

    • Hmmmm, comparing standard tablet with an eink reading device…

  • +3

Bought this from an earlier TGG deal a couple of months ago - surprisingly when I checked the storage capacity in the settings - it was the 32Gb version and not the 8Gb. There’s no indication on the box of storage size that I noticed so you may be lucky if you C&C.

    • +2

Wow that was a nice surprise I bet!

    • +2

      That's a lot of ebooks

      • Its nice, but seriously I have dozens of books on mine and I've not come close to filling even a quarter of my 8Gb. And its not like you need to change books in a hurry

        • arent ebooks like 8mb tops each?

    • don't amazon cloud hold your books anyway if you have sync on

      • Yeah there’s no way I’d need 32Gb worth of books but that size is mainly to hold Audiobooks which, from what I understand isn’t an option on Australia anyway.

        • Audible isn't working here?

          • @[Deactivated]: Not through the Australian kindles I heard. Through the regular Audible apps yes but not the Kindles

        • +1

I never understood the point of audiobooks on a kindle. Isn’t it easier to just use your phone? I have the new paperwhite, is there any reason I should give audiobooks on it a go?

          • @AustriaBargain: I think it's not working in Australia, at least with the Kindle Oasis when I emailed their support, but there's supposedly a function to sync audiobooks to ebooks, so you can read it with your eyes while having it read to you in your ears.

            • @Ilumeo: Yeah I guess that's a good reason to use it, follow along on eink while listening to an unabridged audiobook at the same time. I doubt the auto sync works with pirated books anyway, so may as well listen on my phone and follow along on the kindle.

    • There actually is an indication, on the back it says 8gb in a medium sized box. You got lucky!

    Dat bezel tho.

  • Thank you OP. My 10 year old would love it. Any book recommendations for a 10 year old girl?

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Harry Potter.

    • +1

      Ranger's Apprentices/Brotherhood series
Redwall is quite an old series

      • Sabriel (Garth Nix)
      • The Wee Free Men (Terry Pratchett)
      • A Wizard of Earthsea (Ursula Le Guin)
      • Howl's Moving Castle (Diana Wynne Jones)

All are the first book in a great series, so there's more of each series if they like them

    • +1

      Deltora Quest (Emily Rodda)
      Alex Rider Series (Anthony Horowitz)
      His Dark Materials (Phillip Pullman)

    • Some Richard Dawkins biology books. More than any other pop science writer, Dawkins best encapsulates what studying biology at university learns ya. Everyone deserves a good biology education. A working understanding of the origins of life as we know it should be offered to all children at least, imo.

    • Tao Te Ching (The Book of The Way)

  • Tempting. Was planning on getting one for my birthday this year. Wonder if they will be any cheaper by June?

    • They seem to be priced pretty consistently. Unless you manage to rack up a few things like 10% off ebay giftcards, 10% paypal credit, and then there's a similar sale to this. Otherwise I'd say this is going to be about as good as it gets, give or take ~$10

There is also the lower down model Kindle, which in my opinion save for the waterproofing / backlight, is more than sufficient. I don't even use the backlight on my paperwhite, just waterproofing for peace of mind.

      • Hi, if I dun need the waterproofing feature,

which earlier model do you think is a good deal?

        • Not an earlier model, just the lower down one, the plain old "Kindle" https://www.amazon.com.au/Kindle-Reader-Glare-Free-Touchscre…

That's the regular price, and it's been removed from Good Guys (they used to sell it). Only seen it on sale on black friday.

So the extra $50 might be worth it to you for the Paperwhite, but up to what's important to you.

Otherwise, second-hand could definitely be the way to go - check eBay with the recent sitewide 10% off sale!

          • @snoopydoop: Thanks for the long reply. Cheers. Might get the paperwhite in that case. I prefer new for my kindle.

        • I upgraded to this one just so I can use it in the bath. I had the one before it. They are almost identical, except the new one has like a layer of plastic over the screen whereas the old one feels like you're just getting the bare screen. you'd think bare screen would look better but I think the layer of plastic over the waterproof one looks much better, plus you don't get dust and hairs trapped int he rubber frame anymore. I like the new one a lot.

    • Nope unless a newer model comes out

  • Love them but I just wish they were a tad bigger. Great device though.

    • Kobo has bigger screens.

    • Oasis is bigger and much more expensive.

    Grabbed one of these cases,

    nice price and well reviewed.

It's the ebooks that cost you in the long term. Similar to cheap printer and exxy cartridges…

      but yeah, support actual shops

      • I found you have to save some epub as the old mobi format to work on this, it cant handle the newer mobi format

    • In the image it has an X next to "Kindle Paperwhite". Does it work with the paperwhite? Even "sleep/wake function"?

      • Sorry for the late reply.
Yes the case fits the new version of Paperwhite perfectly including sleep wake function. I think Amazon calls the new version gen 10.

        • Thanks! Going to pick one up

  • If you want to jailbreak these please be sure to not update these when you get them home and connect to wifi. Lesson learnt on my part…

    • Why would you jailbreak a Kindle? And what actually happened when you updated?

      • +2

Jailbreak is possible only for a certain version of the Kindle OS. Once updated, it requires taking the back cover off to access the serial port.

Jailbreaking doesn't offer too many extra features. However, it allows you to install custom reading software that can connect to a cloud service like nextcloud so you don't have to always transfer or email ebooks. Also, you can create custom sleep pictures to name just a few other things.

  • Can these Kindle things read PDF's off a USB?

    • Not sure about off a USB, but you can email PDF's to your Kindle specific email. Not the most ideal format for them, but they do accept them.

      • oh ok well the original files would be in PDF but can I convert them to a file that would look better?

        • +2

Look into the software: "Calibre". Makes it easy to convert pdf's & email to Kindle. mobi files are a good one to convert to.

Also, not essential but especially if you're a usenet user, and familiar with automation programs such as sonarr/radarr/couch potato, look into the software 'lazy librarian'.

          Enjoy!

          • @snoopydoop: Nice, thanks a lot!

          • @snoopydoop: do pdfs even require converting, can't you just use the Send To Kindle app on Windows by right clicking on the pdf?

            • @AustriaBargain: Yeah, they do accept them but it's not the most ideal format for them. Depending on the document can sometimes be cut off etc.

              Hit or miss for now.

FWIW: This the 10th Gen of all Kindles, but 4th Gen of the Kindle PaperWhite.
