Optus Pre-Paid MyTab $137 at Harvey Norman Moss Vale

290

Just picked up a Pre-Paid Optus MyTab for $137 at Harvey Norman Moss Vale, down from the already reduced price of $149.

No sure if it's just Harvey Norman Moss Vale, but the sales guy also offered to sell me the Telstra T-Touch for the same price.
I know there's been a few deals on these floating around on Ozbargain, but this is by far the cheapest I've seen.
Also, if you're interested, the Optus MyTab now runs Android 2.2 ( See http://www.optus.com.au/mytabupgrade). For $137 it's a pretty cool piece of kit.

  • Doesnt this one have a resistive screen? That alone is a deal breaker

    • +5

Yeah, it's got a resistive touch screen, but it's about the best resistive touch screen I've used. It's really responsive. Check out YouTube… there's a couple of reviews for it.

      • +4

Agreed, don't obsess about the resistive screen, I've known capacitance smartphone screens that are less responsive.

      • +3

Agree. The resistive screen is quite decent. Having tried both the screens, I didn't think it was a deal breaker.

      • +1

+1! This is a good example of the technology! Resistive screens also got a bad rap from some notably poor implementations, not actual inherent flaws in the tech per se! ;)

It's also often just a matter of getting used to a resistive screen compared to a capacitive one, they each have their own idiosyncrasies!

  • Unfortunately, still $149 on the site. Or else I could have used the Dick Smith's 14 day price match policy http://dicksmith.com.au/help/price-matching-content

  • Hi saffadude, could please upload your receipt so we can try to get a price match at other HN or Dick Smith stores. I have heard this thing will come down to $99 pretty soon, but with 2.2 now available I am so tempted to bite right now!

        Thank you sir!
Am I taking a risk by assuming you are male? In my experience not many girls like to be called dude ;)

      • Thanks a heap.
But you may want to obscure your IMEI number, pretty sure you don't want that out in general circulation (otherwise about 50 knock-off Chinese made phones will appear on the network with the same number, and your connection will fail)

    • i doubt it cost is $105

  • -5

I want to want these but I just can't. My 3.5" iPhone has I higher resolution…so it's seems pointless to have a "tablet" that actually has less screen space than my phone….just stretched.

    • +3

Your iPhone has a screen half the size & also probably cost near a grand; even more if you were stupid enough to sign up for a massive contract just so you could say you had an iPhone as quickly as possible! :p

Most objective reviewers (that I read) of the 'retina' screen on the iPhones agreed that whilst it was very nice indeed from a technical perspective; practically speaking, on a screen that small, the resolution was complete overkill! ;)

        1. My reasoning for buying an iPhone is none of your business, I didn't attack your purchase choice so why attack mine?
        2. The screen maybe half the size, yet it still has a larger viewing area than this so called tablet.
        3. The retina screen isn't pointless, it makes text crystal clear and great for the eyes. It allows entire webpages to be displayed at once which makes zooming in to the right spot much quicker.

I personally rather pay extra and get decent products, rather than buying bargain junk and spending my time attacking products you secretly wish you had.

You've caught me out…yes, I'm harbouring a secret iPhone fetish, is there a support group? :p

FWIW, I have a Galaxy Tab…but I have assisted two family members buy, upgrade & setup their ZTE's, that's how I know what great value for money they are! :)

  • Any idea where to source a replacement battery for the Optus MyTab/ZTE V9? I haven't had much luck searching online but maybe I'm doing something wrong, lol.

PS: Thanks OP for bringing to my attention the availability of the update ^.^

    • Maybe contact ZTE Aust directly??? They'd be able to help I reckon! :)

Very tempted to turn this into the world's blingiest media centre remote.

I bought this from DSE 2 days ago for 149$. Upgraded to 2.2. Unlocked it for free (just googled and you will find the site with the free unlock code). Rooted with z4root. Added a 16GB microsd. Created 2 partitions (14GB fat32,2GB ext2) and used link2sd to work around the "out of disk space" issue. My ZTE V9 is now a mobile toy for my kids when we are going away. It plays divx beautifully smooth and all the kid games … what can I say … keep them really quite in the car ;)

    • How did you get it to play divx smooth, all the reviews say it's choppy with divx and you can only get smooth playback if you convert files to mp4? I also want to use this as video player in the car for the kids, but was not keen on converting all my divx videos to mp4.

      • +1

Mines smooth i use moboplayer from apps store, also switch to flight mode and close all apps in task manager that you arnt using, if its not smooth enough

        • +1

          Thanks Mikinoz.

      • -1

You still have videos encoded with Divx?

        • I'm afraid so phoba (pun fully intended lol), mainly kids stuff, which I can't be bothered converting because they get over stuff pretty quick. My good stuff is mostly 720p x264 (good quality, small file size).

      • Maybe a good microsd card will help or maybe the 2.2 upgrade does some magic to the device!?. I just use the free acrmedia player and the movies I played (G-Gorce & Alvin and the Chipmunks) were playing just fine.

      • The thing to remember with all of these android devices is that you need to be aware of just how many apps you have running concurrently, coz they do tend to pile up & can really bog down any device. This includes fancy animated wallpapers too, some of those are massive resource hogs! ;)

If you check task manager regularly & find lots of stuff running that you're well & truly done with ATM, then you really need a (free) task killer app that will cull the unnecessary backgrounded processes! Actually, I reckon it's a must-have on any android device! ;)

As Mikinoz said, switching to flight mode will help too! :)

        • Wow, negged not once but twice so far for offering advice gained from personal experience…anyone else wanna turn, I'll just bend over eh? :p

FWIW, that advice is based on my experience with two of these ZTE's, my own GT, the very same advice from a mate who's quite cluey with Android stuff, & also my own experience helping several non-tech savvy friends' Galaxy S's!

For those not bright enough to realise, it's not a slight against Android, it's just commonsense advice!!!

        • +1

you need to be aware of just how many apps you have running concurrently, coz they do tend to pile up

Incorrect, Android apps are automatically killed off when they are not in use. That's how Android manages RAM.

Android ensures application responsiveness by stopping and killing processes as necessary to free resources for higher-priority applications.

          http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734262

then you really need a (free) task killer app that will cull the unnecessary backgrounded processes!

Again bad advice, task killers should not be used in any situation to autokill processes, because some of these processes are immediately launched again after they are killed. Secondly, some of these processes run in the background so they can be launched faster when you need them. In some circumstances they are application dependencies (i.e. they need to be running in order for another application to work). You're simply wasting battery life and using CPU cycles to kill these processes only to have to launch them again later.

Used correctly you can manually kill off run-away applications which remain running even though you don't want them to (for example if you quit Angry Birds and it still runs in the background, you can use Task killer to quit it immediately without having to go back into the game).

TLDR version:You don't need task killers, and you're better off without one. Read this.

        • That may be correct in theory scrimshaw, in reality totally agree with Stewballs.

Once you load a decent powerpoint or watching a movie, bluetooth streaming music etc you need to start killing apps.

        • @Scrimshaw,

Now, I'm fairly new to this whole Android game and that's interesting info, and yes I understand the theory behind it, but again I'm with Mikinoz on this one. It sounds great in theory but in practice it doesn't really work reliably! I fire up task manager & there's heaps of processes there that should've been automatically killed according to your theory & those links!

Now, not trying to contradict you or anything, but IME the whole "because some of these processes are immediately launched again after they are killed" theory does get blown out of the water when you've run ATK & killed X number of apps, then not touched the device for a while & hit ATK again…zero apps are killed!

To be honest, you've kinda contradicted yourself…to say on one hand "Used correctly you can manually kill off run-away applications which remain running even though you don't want them to"…then in the same stanza go on to say "You don't need task killers, and you're better off without one" seems very counterintuitive to me…maybe it's too late at night, but IMHO whether your doing it manually or having something decent like ATK do it doesn't seem to matter, the point is you still acknowledge a NEED to kill off errant apps/processes! ;)

Every Android device I've seen really bogs down when there's multiple unused backgrounded apps; and there's a substantial boost in responsiveness when I run ATK! I must defer to your theoretical knowledge here, but as Mikinoz said, my practical experience is that ATK works!

I'd like to see more developers include 'quit' functions in their apps personally, that would moot this whole debate! ;)

These things are outstanding value at anything under $150. The upgrade to 2.2 makes a big difference too; full marks to Optus/ZTE for following up on the upgrade too…great find OP! :)

  • Has anyone managed to use the receipt uploaded by saffadude to price match this at other HN stores or DSE or BigW? I want to have a go today…..

  • hey Billy_Bob, I didn't have the receipt, but HN wouldn't drop it below $149 for me…. but I got it anyway.

Damn fine price for a really decent mobile browser, GPS device, and many many many apps!

    Lovin it.

  • I tried quite a few places near me and either they didn't have it or they wouldnt go below $149. Now I regret not buying it at $149. I really wanted some gadget to play with tonight. Damn it. I might get it on monday.

    • Dunno if Morley Galleria is close to you, but they show up on the DSE website stock search as having 'limited stock'? ;)

  • I managed to get Harvey Norman in Fyshwick to price match the receipt. Thanks saffadude!

I also managed to get DSE in Eltham VIC to pricemath using saffadude's receipt. Thanks mate. I have uploaded my receipt here: http://upload.ozbargain.com/2011/05/08/5854_dse_mytab_receip…

PS> I thought there would be a section in the FAQ about how to upload pics/receipts but apparently not? Figured it out eventually.

use http://www.anyhub.net/ or any of the other free options listed at
      http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/free_file_hosts

I tried HN Preston and they said they wouldn't match because it was interstate, although I got the distinct impression they would have simply found another excuse from their long list anyway. Can't stand HN so I walked out - would prefer to pay tricky dicky $149 including free postage than support HN.

      • I think the guy at DSE did not notice that saffadud'e receipt was from interstate, I just showed him on my phone and he just glanced at it quickly. Cool gadget for $137 and quality is better than I expected.

        • I'm happy for DSE to be slack, but if you can post your receipt it sets a new precedent. I used www.anyhub.net on the weekend - its easy.

Hi effgee, I already posted my receipt, see above 8/5 20:50

    • sorry dude, didn't see it in the excitement. Anyway, dse seems to be all out of stock now anyway…regretting not buying from HN -now I have to make another trip.

A friend told me Aussie Post has reduced their price to $149 too, might be worth a shot! ;)
