True that, I have an 8GB (max) lenovo hybrid laptop and desperate for more mem! At work I use 16GB and is now getting 32GB upgrade!

Windows 10 after a restart is >3GB. You can get linux (~1GB), but gave up after different tries to get all the hardware working!

      • +1

True but machines aggressively page ram now. unused ram is wasted ram, so free ram doesn't mean much anymore.

        • you can set the size of your pagefile or even disable to make use of RAM :-)

    • SSDs are so fast that paging isn't really much of an issue. The only item with low RAM these days are games and video editing.

  • +1

Was hoping they also have the Surface Book 2 on sale but guess not..

    • +1

yea ikr i was looking for the same thing omg ffs.

      • +1

Just checked their website and it seems they have discounted the Surface books there. I know the Surface Book 3 is on the horizon so these should have definitely been on sale.

        • Yea i saw but still a bit too pricey tbh

  • I bought one of these about 6 months ago when the sale was on before. This computer has been fantastic for uni, I have even managed to run a virtual machine on it for an ICT course. 4GB isn't much ram but honestly it has been a solid secondary computer for when I am at uni…

    • -1

Was the virtual machine Windows 98?

  • +3

doing some research - it was this same price 6 months ago, not that stellar today https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/403781

Also, for $200 more this laptop had given double the ram/ssd to 8GB/256GB for $1200 previously https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/425362

4GB memory 128gb SSD? Ya'll gotta be crazy

    • Usher wants to have a word with you Link

    • Y’all can still use word and internet

  • +2

Good deal, but the difference between 8th and 7th gen Intel is pretty big and you only get 4Gb of ram

  • I have one and it's a great form factor but the ram really kills it

  • This version uses Windows 10 S doesn't it? Meaning there's a limited range of programs you can use. But maybe you can install Windows 10 Home or Pro by purchasing a key and installing it yourself?

    • Free to get real windows 10.

    • It's a few clicks to upgrade to W10 Pro, and free.

  • got one for Y7 student.

    thanks, op!

  • iFixit rated this laptop very poorly. In their own words:

"The Surface Laptop is not a laptop. It’s a glue-filled monstrosity. There is nothing about it that is upgradable or long-lasting, and it literally can’t be opened without destroying it. (Show us the procedure, Microsoft, we’d love to be wrong.)"
    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Microsoft+Surface+Laptop+Tea…

I'm also wary of the cloth finish. Looks like a nightmare to keep clean.

    • -1

I told them! they don't believe me! can't take it apart, can't clean the damn thing without it losing its cool, can't upgrade. it's just a way for manufacturer to make more money by selling you less, and tricking you into "bargain" situation, when you're really buying something that was slammed in reviews 1.5 years ago.

    • Ifixit rates it for the serviceability, not for the appearance or the compactness. but its target customers are users never tearing their laptops apart - in others words - users in this century.

      • you miss a point here. if this was an 8gb configuration with 256gb ssd at least, that would not be an issue. the issue is being stuck in 2019 with specs slammed in 2017, without ability to tear it apart and upgrade it. so this particular model is for losers in this century.

also we are talking dead weight here. if you buy this now, a year later you will not be able to sell it, no one will want it.

I haven't lost any money on my 3 last laptops, so think about it carefully. don't buy what you can't sell.

      • users never tearing their laptops apart - in others words - users in this century.

I don't fix my car but I expect my mechanic to be able to fix it.

Ifixit rates it for the serviceability,

And everything needs to be serviceable, even laptops. Batteries die. Drives fail.

  • +3

Came here for the 4GB ram comments, was not disappointed LOL :)

  • -3

once again, please guys, don't be foolish, don't buy this crap, you'll thank me later. find a better place to put your hard earned cash into, rather than this handicap :)

    • no

  • Definition of 4GB RAM:

make sure you shut all other programs if you plan on watching anything higher than a 480p video

  • tbh 128gb storage aint even that bad, if you are buying this laptop you are buying it as a uni device, or to browse reddit. you ain't encoding movies or playing games, you don't need crazy storage. the 90gb or so left after windows is fine for that.

but that 4gb ram can die in hell. my mother in law just bought a $170 phone with 4gb of ram

  • At this point in time it would be foolish to buy a new computer that only has 4gb of ram

  • Yeap if you don't know about computers Amazon price doubles virtually for this with 8 GB .

Got 38 sold today to them not the history of 1,877 , probably $1499 to $999 to $799 looks like a bargain LOL .

Maybe kasaresj community service saved some people today :)

    • -1

I certainly hope so! damn, 4gb in 2019. I kinda remember Bill Gates once said 640K of memory was more than anyone needed. he was damn right!

      • He was absolutely right. No one ever needed more than 640K(Max 16bits addressable) of memory in 1981(Intel 8088 CPU).

  • Tossing up between this deal and the surface go for a similar price, can anyone sway me either way? Mainly using for uni note taking, diagrams, textbooks etc

    • +1

This one is much better for the value than the surface go. For the same money, you get a bigger and better touch screen, a comfortable keyboard and a decent sound system. Surface go is the entry level product for the whole surface family.

      • -1

once again, this laptop is a throwaway money, and no one should buy it in 2019.

student needs a proper laptop with a proper keyboard

    • get a Chromebook and start saving for a house.

get this. next business day on site warranty till November 2021. every other student will be envious. these normally sell for $1500+

      • Did you contact the seller to get that information? The description is very short.

        • Kasaresj is the seller….

          • -1

@Bargainbrother: nope, I have no relation to that seller whatsoever. but I do have a nose for a good deal, when it comes to hardware.

        • if you send me a private message, I will tell you how to get that kind of info with Dell.
looks like someone who has brains bought it already :) mission accomplished. can't help the rest of you people. make your own decisions from now on.

          • @[Deactivated]: I'm not too concerned about it, I'm just after one laptop for myself after all. I was just wondering if there was something I was missing.

            • @SlowCarSlow: see my reply below, it's dead simple with Dell. Just get the service tag from the seller. That gives you details on configuration and warranty. All you need to know to make a decision.

Also keep in mind that Latitude and Precision are supposed to be opened and upgraded, there's no voiding warranty in that. You will know ahead of time what RAM there is, and its config (is there an empty slot) and you can order additional RAM if you need it. Hard drives, wait till the unit arrives, then open and assess. Due to extended batteries hard drive options might be limited.

In my case, my unit came with enormous 92Wh battery. Lasts 10 hours + on single charge with 35W CPU, but I only have 1 NVMe slot and one M.2 2242. Not a problem! M.2 2242 256Gb is around $75 delivered if you are happy to wait a bit, and it's an expansion enough for my needs.

So look around, and look sharp :D That was a damn good price for a latest Latitude 5490.

              • @[Deactivated]: Thank you for the information, I will keep it in mind.

                • @SlowCarSlow: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Latitude-7390-Intel-i5-8250u-1-6…

7390 is also a legend, I haven't had my hands on one though, because I am a 15" laptop guy. Anything smaller than that is too cramped. But who knows what you're looking for.

there are also a few 7280, also good, brand new, with extra backpack, but open box which is a bit dodgy, so proceed with caution :D

                  • @[Deactivated]: The dream is sub $600 2-in-1 8GB RAM, with a PPI of over 110 with Windows 10 that can handle 10+ tabs while streaming video and editing word documents without seeming slow. I'm not quite sure what kind of CPU that calls for, but I'd guess an i3 or AMD equivalent. But that's just a dream.

                    • @SlowCarSlow: hmm for that I would look closely at sites like renewd. Just only look at things in "excellent" and "excellent plus" condition. They often have great deals on refurbished gear. They had some enticing 2 in 1 from HP last year, for instance, they are all gone. Even with extra $89 1 year warranty they were around $600-$700 mark. but buying from renewd keep in mind that you're best off selling your laptop within a year. otherwise what can I say, maybe in a year or two there will be a brand new product that fits your ambitions :D

      • Great deal spotting. Wonder why it was so cheap?

        • -1

it is often the case with Dell. resellers get them dirt cheap (compared to retail), often with a large customer in mind. But deals get broken, or numbers altered, and surplus items spill to the general market. It is not rare to see business machines pop up brand new at crazy prices. My Dell Precision was bought off ebay, but came with Ingram Micro invoice. 2.5 times cheaper than retail. That's what I call a bargain.

When you spot one, ask for the service tag, it's a 7 digit alphanumeric code on the box. Get the photo of the box to make sure it's sealed if you are super cautious. The service tag is unique to the unit. Go to Dell support, put the service tag in, and you will know everything about the unit, from CPU, RAM configuration, LCD panel model and resolution, backlit or not backlit keyboard etc. down to the stickers they put on the laptop. Also, detailed information about warranty. When did it start, when does it end, what kind of warranty it is. With dealer purchases of Dell gear you need to know that warranty starts from the day the dealer was invoiced. So let's say if the dealer bought the unit in October 2018, that's when the warranty started. However Dell always adds 3 months to the warranty, so warranty starting in October ends in January. Simple enough :)

Here's info on the unit in question, for example https://www.dell.com/support/home/sg/en/sgdhs1/product-suppo…

Switch to "System configuration" and "Expand everything". Then you can see: extended battery, backlit keyboard, FullHD panel, yada yada yada
Someone got a bargain today. But that wasn't any of those who bought a crippled Microsoft plush toy from this thread.

  • I mean why couldn’t they just drop another 4GB. Would have cost them like $4.50 in production costs. To buy the next model up of course.

    • -1

haha that's not how you make money in hardware business

  • shame it is old version

  • just my 2c and only my experance i would never buy another msharft laptop again $4k spent on a top of the line surfacebook 18months old main batt has died MS want me to shell out another $750 for a replacment as they have no way to replace a simple thing like a batt.
ebay search Batt is worth $40us so i guess i will be giving it a go but never will i tell anyone to buy one of these for as long as i'm around.
Great as long as it never needs anthing fixed on the H/W side.

  • Buying this laptop with 4GB RAM is like paying for a sleek looking $800 Dyson fan when you could have gotten an air-cond for $200 more, future proofing for when you have friends over you have something to cool down the entire room instead of having the fan on rotate and your mates waiting their turn for the fan to swing their direction

  • -1

Yes I think 4gb ram is a little low. My MacBook air from 2013 had these same specs. It will run but don't expect it to run great.

    • And people were saying 4gb of ram wasn't enough back then…..

Remember the early 2000's where tech 'specialists' were saying you need to double your ram every year to stay up to date? If I stuck to their advice if have 4tb of ram right now!

      Don't believe the hype… 😉

Missed the deal. What about this MS laptop?

    It's for Yr 6

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-Core-m-…

  • I've been eyeing a SL of for a while and had my mind set on SL2 i5, 256GB, 8GB ram in Black for $2k RRP. Could probably buy hopefully for $1600 when on sale maybe..

I mainly use spreadsheets (a couple running at a time), log onto server via Citrix, watch youtube vids etc + browse the net. No photo editing or games. My current older Dell Studio has i7 (q740) processor but only 4GB ram, no SSD.

Do you think the one in the deal with 4GB ram would be enough for me for what I am doing? Or should I hold out and wait for a deal on SL2 with the above specs? Is there really that much difference from SL1 to SL2 apart from the slightly updated processor-will it really make a heap of difference?

Also, how does the TRS work if you are located in Aus and purchasing from this link? I didnt think it was possible to claim TRS in those circumstances.

    Thanks for all the help.

    • Didn't you buy the one in another post?
      SL i5, 256GB, 8GB, $1199

TRS is sth you can manipulate if you plan to fly overseas soon (and welcome back :D ).

      • Nah mate, wasn't me. But thanks for the advice re TRS :)

        Cheers

  • I’ll get one if there is in stock
