First time poster, so please go easy on me.

I left mine at home and it’s a drag at work without earphones. I work next to officeworks. Catch of the day are selling EarPods for $25 and with officeworks price beat it comes down to $23.74.

Thanks guys

      Yes (but why would you)

        1. Headphone jack is broken - happened to one of my mates, couldn't be bothered to get it fixed because there's no Apple Store near him and lightning earpods work fine.

        2. If you have 2 iPhones for whatever reason e.g. one from work, and one still has a headphone jack and one doesn't, might be easier to use the one pair of earpods across both.

That's about all I can think of, lol.

BEWARE EARPODS ON CATCH ARE NOT GENUINE.

I purchased some a month ago. Sold by Catch and not another company on the marketplace, listing advertised as genuine Apple EarPods. When they arrived the serial number is not recognised by the serial check tool on apples site and volume up/down controls on them don’t work which is consistent with generic android headphones. I contacted Catch and advised that they were not legitimate and how I knew, they refunded me immediately.

    • That sounds more like a way to get them for free.

They weren't terrible headphones from memory.

        • Yes they have a very similar sound signature, I could not locate any serial numbers on the product/plastic case itself, so I have never checked their authenticity.

          • @thebadmachine: The serial is printed on the headphone cable. Do your volume up/down controls on the cable work?

            • @Cheaplikethebird: Yes volume up/down & middle home/Siri button work. Just to let you know I purchased mine around the same time as you, a month or two ago.

      This is neg worth.

    • Hi this seems to be an issue with Amazon AU also, was shopping for EarPods recently, and a couple reviews on Amazon EarPods page said that they were not genuine.
So I went with catch.com.au since they claimed to be genuine, bought 2 and paid for delivery (which was similar in price for 2 from Amazon with free shipping).
This is disappointing to hear that catch.com.au may also be non-genuine. They sound similar to the originals (except slight distortion at certain frequencies I recently noticed).
Where did you find the serial numbers ? I have one still brand new in its plastic case, but cannot find the serial number anywhere.

      • It’s printed on the headphone cable. Interested to know how you go.

        • I throroughy checked on cable, no serial numbers… I thought this was kind of Apple’s aesthetic/habit, they don’t print or show numbers etc on their products (a sign mine are genuine maybe).
Even when buying EarPods from the Apple store they only provide 3 months warranty.
So I think they don’t really expect people to check serial numbers/service/warranty coverage.

As far as I know I think they are genuine, except from that slight distortion I noticed on certain frequency (lossless files), which could be just a bad pair.
As I said this issue existed on certain pairs from Amazon AU too, so maybe the suppliers got tricked and a few fake ones were sold to customers. I’d think they have caught on and sorted it out.

          • @thebadmachine: Everyone says that. Guarantee you it's there, it's just really hard to spot. It should be on the lower end near the lightning connector and it's in grey.

A colleague of mine was formerly an Apple genius and he was the one who prompted me to check, headphones purchased with the phone dont have a serial (because it's under phone's serial) but purchased separately they will have one printed on the cable. I just double checked on my broken pair of earpods that I bought in an Apple store and they have a serial.

One thing you haven't answered was whether the volume up/down controls on the cable work, if they do and they sound decent enough then who cares if they are genuine or not.

            • @Cheaplikethebird: Hi , yes I answered your volume controls question on your other comment above.
I found the serial number, typed it in Apple’s check coverage page, product could not be found. Said ‘Made in Vietnam’ on cable so I went through Vietnam’s Apple check coverage sight, still could not be found.
Then read through a lot of forums with some people saying EarPods are not included in the check coverage section.

I have some similarities with this persons suspicious observations. (Inner mesh colour, plasticky smooth cable instead or grippy rubber [particularly the split upper section], Apple logo on case seems to be consistently deep as the originals for me).
Now are they just genuine inferior quality EarPods made for certain markets (like iPhone 5c etc)? Or are they genuinely good fakes. I’m agreeing with your suspicions now.

  • Could not get Adelaide Officeworks store to match this. Their call centre would only match it with the shipping fee added minus 5% (around $30)

    • I walked into an officeworks here in Sydney and the person at the counter matched it no problems. I’ve uploaded a photo in a comment below

  • Which OW was it?
