    For a dollar, I assume it's one with four wheels and an engine.

    My uncle used to run an Avis, what they need to move can vary closer to the date. They have a certain amount of space per city, if they're getting overloaded they'll simply move whatever isn't being driven that day.

      A lot of vehicle relocations are based on the tourist season. like moving vehicles out of the wet season up north or the cold in Tasmania. Also moving the vehicles back to where people like to start their one way journey.

    The key is using a credit card that includes domestic travel insurance.
    Otherwise you can usually pick up domestic travel cover that includes a car rental benefit for a week for around $30-40. This is usually much cheaper than the cover offered by the rental companies.
