pro tip - cable tie it into the vent. rock solid then. especially with big ass phones
They’ve only worked for me when I can clip it to the lowest vent flap and the base can rest on the solid frame around the AC vent.

I have one of these. They are worth the money. Solid. This will not fall as it has a lock in the back. Cable tie is a better idea though
I bought one when they first came out. It clamps to the air vent really well - others I've had tend to slide off, this one not so much. Could probably make it even better by putting tape or a 3M sticker on the vent itself, but as is it's pretty good. Maybe once a week or two I check to make sure it's not slipping off due to my accidentally hitting it. Mobile slots in fine with a case, and is held firm.
Negatives - I'm not so sure about the fast charging. It doesn't seem to do that with my Galaxy S9. It charges wirelessly fine, just not fast charging (this is with a good cable coming from a proper adapter, and my 'phone does do fast wireless charging on a stand alone Qi charger). I've tried other cables and power adapters, but it could just be something to do with them or my case. Doesn't worry me that much though. The other minor thing is I find the clamps tend to press the hateful "bixby" button on my S9 (resolved by disabling it via the BxActions app) so might want to be aware of that. Oh, and if there isn't a 'phone in there, the thing can make a rattling noise over rough roads (my car has firm suspension, so that means most roads).
Overall though, am happy with it.
What if you have android auto which requires a USB connection? Does it make this sort of thing useless (as well as any car phone holders)?

I have an iphone so use carplay but can answer this: it's useful to have your phone handy in case you need to restart an app or do things you can't on carplay (quickly, when the car isn't in motion and you've pulled over etc etc). Furthermore, dunno about AA, but in Carplay, the phone acts as a 2' display with things like maps, providing a list of written route guidance. I find the combo of my main screen + phone to be super usable and a great setup. I use a magnetic mount on the right-side driver's vent with a 2m high quality MFI cable hidden under the trim to this location. Makes for a very clean look.

It only opens if it is powered i.e. you have the ignition or engine on. If you forget to get you phone out before taking the key out your phone is stuck.
If you don’t put your phone in the holder you can get rattling.
I had to put the clamp on the top vent to make this slightly palatable.
I mustn’t have a fast charger because it charges slowly.
It unlocks when it ‘senses’ your hand near the bottom third of the holder. i have had the phone fall out a few times because I haven’t noticed it unclamping after touching the phone.Are you sure you got this one? The Kogan/dse mount is purely mechanical…..
