  • Beat me to posting this deal, good find :)

  • For those looking for an option to tide themselves over until Zen 2 (which is at most 2 months away):

    https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/Product/Product.aspx?Ite…

Ryzen 1700 for under $250. As I understand it, with much lower demand for 1st gen Threadripper and the 1800X discontinued, AMD aren't really binning Zeppelin dies as readily as they did at launch, meaning these 1700s overclock very favourably against a 2700.

I'd honestly avoid the 2700 altogether if you can, and strongly consider avoiding the 2700X too in favour of on-selling something like this once Zen 2 is in the wild.

    • Yep, this is a big price drop but the 1700 has been the one to buy for ages. These AMDs are not the best for gaming FPS, so they compete as general CPUs. The newer gen are better, but only a little. The 1700 at that price is easily the best value thing on the market in bang for buck. For FPS you have to buy intel and preferably K series. For general use, the 1700 is a bargain and a better bargain than the 2500K was… I know, got two!

      • I'd say Ryzen only really starts to hurt you at 1080p 240Hz, and only in more modern games that aren't built optimally for the architecture (though that's a lot as a percentage).

For everyone else, 1st gen Ryzen is going to get the job done most of the time, and it's a great interim step to 3rd gen, which should solve most of these issues alongside a lot of game engines and GPUs getting much better at reducing draw calls, which are a big part of what causes these CPU bottlenecks in the first place.

  • It's also $359 at pccasegear, shipping would be $12 but if you're in vic you can pick up for free

Also can find it as cheap as $350 in some aussie stores
