      • How is the 520 detune, map only?

      • Hey remedycrd,

Which remap did you use on the 1 series? I’ve got one and have been considering it down the track. Was it a worthwhile upgrade?

        Thanks

        • +2

I'm in Melbourne and had it done by evolve-technik in Box Hill.
Would recommend it whole heartedly. Transforms the car.

          • @remedycrd: I imagine it would, huge gain there. So flash tune only, no dyno with AFRs recorded?

Stock maps are rubbish, once my car was re-tuned fuel economy got better to. Cruises at 4L/100km @110kph, was twice that before.

          • @remedycrd: Thanks for the advice. I'm up in Sydney and it looks like they have a partner up here.

Might be time to make it happen sooner rather than later.

Ex demo… nothing bad could happen to an STI while being "demoed" by a series of enthusiastic 21 year olds.

      • 2.5 years of warranty left, gearbox is good for 1000HP. Had it checked over by Subaru then my engine builder. Brand new and actually was babied!

        • Babied demo, so didn’t get run in properly is my interpretation of that.

        • No WRX gearbox is good for 1000HP. I had 450HP in my WRX and I broke the gearbox twice, even after having the gears shot peened. I had to upgrade the whole box to PPG straight cut just to handle 450HP.

    • Lol $25k for an ex demo sti. Is your ex demo from 2010?

      • nope 8 month old at the time of sale, 6000km on the clock

        • +4

If someone trades in their 2017 520i for this then they can get it for $20k all up. Better deal than your WRX.

      • Demo'd @ the WRC perhaps

    • +2

320kW in Sydney traffic would be fun.

Edit: Haha, so the price you quoted was after you deducted what you sold your other car for? Pretty sure it doesn't work that way.

      • that why I have a pushbike as a daily, its actually 10min faster to work lol,

    • +1

yeah, tell us how did you manage to get it for 25K? And then these are two different cars, STI has really firm ride and sorry, but looks quite cheap inside in comparison with Euro cars, while 520i runs very smoothly and significantly bigger car, which sits in another league and different class…

      • Have a look at the modern premium trim car from other manufactures not just Subaru, not even STI. In terms of safety "gadgets" not much difference. Even compared to Kia and Hyundai. Interior, they're all trying to copy tesla now. idrive still sucks, benz version is even worse.

        • sorry, don't want to disappoint you, but everyone who is a bit familiar with the field knows that BMW's entertainment system is the best in terms of logic and quality… But again, these cars are in completely different leagues, what is the point to compare? The similar to STI in specs will be m140i (a bit faster in the standard though), right ?

          • @Ametric: Harman Kardon in BMW and all premium trim Subarus. Why pay 3 times more for a car that worse?

            • +1

@Bid Sniper: you know that one brand produces different lines of speakers (the same as with any other products), right?
And again, please include (add) the price of your previous car to the sum cost of the new purchase, you will may realise it is not 3 times and not even 2 times… :)

    • +1

Completely different car for a different market (yes, believe it or not, people buy cars for more than engine output figures!), but cool flex.

Bargain is a bargain against the regular MSRP of the product (in this case its almost 30% off the regular price).

    • +2

      $25k isnt a normal price.

Also, you can't attempt to show off to your neighbours and friends without the BMW badge. People will think you are poor

      • Actually people think I'm a drug dealer, no one road rages me in this car, seriously!

        • maybe because they don't want to see your sad face when their bmw outperforms you? :)

          • @Ametric: They need another $100K to get close ;-)

            • @Bid Sniper: let's believe in this :)

              • @Ametric: Actually I'm wrong.

My old WRX station wagon had similar power. It out accelerated a BMW M4 from a rolling start with mattress strapped to my roof and boot full of clothes.

So no need more money, honesty for $20k more over the M4 you can get a Tesla P100D or Model 3 performance with $30k in change coming out this year.

I can see why BMW is scared amd going all in to EVs.

                • +2

@Bid Sniper: an old WRX wagon outperformed M4, was the other driver aware that you were racing with him?

                • +1

@Bid Sniper: Outaccelerated M4. Doesnt matter if the other person is not racing you still win? Lol

          • @Ametric: I don't think there are many things a 520i outperforms with 135kw and 1.5 tonne.

            • @brendanm: there was a reference to M4 performance, not to 520i. BTW, I strongly believe that for low speeds allowed in Australia (max. 110 km/h, very high fines and no auto bans), the power of 520i is more than enough (sadly to say this)…

    • Cars are more than just an engine you know. You can’t compare the two, one is a mid-sized sports car and the other is a luxury sedan.

Not everyone buys a car for performance. As a former STI owner and now euro owner, I wouldn’t go back. Build quality, fit and finish is night and day.

    • "my STI has a tune and intake and has 320kw/660nm"

Interesting as I needed to have a complete Autronics ECU, bigger STi VF23 turbo and larger IC just to make the same power…
You must have a WRC spec engine as standard in yours!

Is this a high yield investment? Asking for a friend

  • I am getting. 100,632.56 in WA

    Great price!
Still have the Telsa from last deal sitting in the garage.

    • Last year saw a model S p90D with 20,000km on it for for $98K same lot. 2 years old at the time. Good price if you look at this BMW

  • Still standard two years warranty, isn’t it?

  • +2

It's because the Kia Stringer GT will pull it's pants down and still keep ~10k in the bank, plus a 7 years warranty.

    • +3

who wants to eat dog meat when you can taste Sauerkraut?

      • This is the difference between innovation and traditionalism….Maintain that attitude at your own peril!

  • +2

Seems to a good deal through. If they can add M package for free I will buy.

I had bad experience in BMW Chatswood. Was asking price of 530d touring and they have 520d touring in stock. They offered me 20k discount which I think it is still too much (still 90k drive away, come on who buys 520d for 90k). They don't want to give my credit card and driver license back so I have to waste another half hour just talking. Maybe BMW gives loads of commission for selling 520

    • Lol. :p did you use the "driveaway" calculator like one of our friends suggested above. $90k seems like a "bargain" if you did.

      • Nope. Salesman showed me "driveaway" price in his Ipad. I believe it should be calculator price plus packages. From my memory it has M sport package.
Is it a "bargain"? from around 110k down to 90k, or about 22% discount it looks like not that bad. But I just wouldn't pay 90k for 520d. I think BMW has been crazy about their suggested driveaway price.

        • Yupe. Ridiculous RRPs. Wonder anyone would ever pay for the RRP on common cars.

Experience at an Audi dealership when the dealer principal showed me his "cost" and did an "open book" deal with me. 15% without trying, with complimentary corporate goodies on top for 3 years "free" service, loan car + drop off service.

          • @[Deactivated]: Tesla and prosche buyers? Their RRP is just a reference.

I was trying to drive away a new X5 with 20% off but couldn't do it. 69k+5 year servicing 520i is a good price for me. wondering if sydney dealers can price match up

            • +1

@Jerryzhang: A few factors that will determine the actual price someone would pay for a car (based on personal experience):
              1. The car - simple supply and demand of a particular model;
              2. Time of the year (or month) - dealers more willing to do deals month end, quarter end, and year end;
              3. The salesperson - does he/she need that additional car to hit the next bonus tier (or meet his monthly target)?
              4. The dealership - certain dealership won't bother to entertain. Some dealership moves alot of high end models with bigger margin usually won't bother with lower end cars. It pays to shop around.

The buy price of 1819 compliant BMW 520i is currently valued at 60-65k private, and 65-71k dealer - according to Redbook for a used 520i.

The car has been sitting with the dealer since late 2018 (a few months) and continue to depreciate rapidly by the day. The loner they hold onto it, the less it is worth. Be it the car is new/demo/used, people will price it as a one year old car. (Dealer will do the same when taking a trade in)

I find the easiest way to seal a deal is, has been working so far.
              1. Do enough research to understand what the car is worth/willing to pay;
              2. Ring around to test water;
              3. Once confirmed on a dealership, walk in with the intention of putting down a deposit and ready to close off the balance in full (the sales staff are very good at sniffing out joy riders) - deal straight with the dealer principal where possible, that person will go straight to the point without too much hassle.
              4. Low ball with room for negotiation (with 5-10% of the price in mind), be reasonable or they wont entertain.

The above method worked well to-date. I have had dealers tried telling me it is below cost, and calls me back the next day saying they can do it. (Too late, already bought with another dealer). Works even better when going in with an apple to apple comparison and tell them the 3 are on the shopping list. Ie. Flexible to either buy a 520i, a5, e220.

The price OP posted is reasonable, but definitely not a "deal", particularly on OzB. Pretty cut throat here.

Goodluck with 20% on a 2019 x5. I havent managed anything more than 15% to-date on a current year model. - try Sylvania BMW, they are quite negotiable. If people are managing 15% on the a250 (current wait list around 3-6 months), dont see why not on a tired model).

Amuses me on some people's perception of a " luxury" car and what they are worth.

Also annoys me on how non-transparent dealership car pricing is in AU.

              • @[Deactivated]: I truly appreciate your advice. Last time I was in BMW chastwood and was ready to pay deposite if you can do new X5 3.0D sport package for 115k ( with no bouns free servicing) and they said no. They can do 520d touring for 90+5 year free servicing. I think it is too much for 520d.

The price OP posted here I believe is baseline model without package. 5 year free service I valued is about 2.5 to 3k. So do you think 520i with M sport package and some decent package + 5 year free servicing is worth 70k?

                • @Jerryzhang: X5 3.0D RRP @ $150k, 15% down translates to 127k. I will guess $125k (120-130k) is more realistic. Not sure if that guesstimate is any close to what you have paid.

1 yo 520i with 5 years service for $70k, like said earlier, a reasonable price. Nothing "bargain" about it. The second the car is driven out of the dealership and drive it back immediate for a trade in. Might get 65k if one is lucky.

If i am to buy this car, I would ask for $3-4k discount without the service pack.

Don't think it will happen any time soon. Not a particular fan of "luxury" cars these days, satisfaction per $ dollar paid is no where near what it used to be in younger days. (Financial decision - tax rate in oz doesnt encourage such as well $100k car = $140k before tax salary) Got a humble $20odd k hatchback as daily drive nowadays and a "fun" car on the side.

Edit: sorry, didnt read your comment properly on 520i + m pack + 5 yrs service. Honestly don't know what is it worth. Not a car that i would buy.

                  • @[Deactivated]: I do have a fun car now and I am happy with my car (it is infiniti Q50s hybrid btw). The thing is that the boot space and read seats in my infiniti is so small that every time I go to airport I have to organise a taxi. I need to upgrade a proper family car.

"X5 3.0D RRP @ $150k" I think you were referring to X5 M50D, which I can't afford. I am talking about 30D with RRP 129k. 15k discount translates to 11% and BMW chatswood can't do it. Might have to call few more dealers to see how it goes.

                    • @Jerryzhang: The new G05?

There is a live post on Whirlpool https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2730377

Some guy paid $128k for the 30d with a pretty extensive options list.

                      • @[Deactivated]: Yes the New G05. Thanks for the forums. I see people generally negoitate around 12% discount. I will see how much shuold new GLE class be.

                        • @Jerryzhang: Haha. Yea, I bet the x5 is still abit short on the supply side given it is a brand new model. In a few months when the next batch comes in and EOFY sales… will probably get more aggressive discounts.

Not sure whether you are really keen on those two cars, or just want it for the badge factor… If it is for the badge factor, check out the Maserati Levante… they are surprisingly affordable. All "prestige" manufacturers are watering things down.

                          • @[Deactivated]: Nope, I just need a German car with large space (rear seats and boot). My wife prefers SUV whereas I hate driving large SUV and people mover.

I agree that prestige manufacturers are bringing price down and Maserati Levante is a great car, but considering it is at least 150k+, I could buy a people mover (perhaps v250d?) + bmw z4. I test drived Levante, great handling, amazing sounds, not so good space.

The BMW 520i at around 65k might be the best opinion for me, considering my whole family is only visiting me once or twice a year. In that case, a people mover is much better than a suv.

                • @Jerryzhang: Might be worth trying Col Crawford BMW in Brookvale. They were pretty good to deal with a year ago for me a year ago compared to Chatswood.

                  • @Millikano: Great. I am hoping they are open Sunday afternoon. Do you mind share the name of the sales person you had good experience with?

                    • @Jerryzhang: The guy I dealt with was Tyler who has now left, and finance was Paul.

                      Best of luck.

    • 90K for 520D is OK.. it is a family car for those who hates SUV.
My friend just bought a S63. Not many people will choose mercedes for over $300K budget , but still someone will be interested.

      • wow S63 amg. Sedan or coupe? my dream car

  • Money well spent

  • -2

Fantastic, since many of us here apparently have $500k to spare and don't know what to do with it, based on the forums.

  • -1

Is this considered a high yield investment?

  • old model running on Pulp. Check redbook before Gumtree

  • Damn it, I'm down to my last million! :(

  • +1

Lucky I work at Westpac this will be easy to buy!

  • Fearful of Tesla ?

    • Yep sounds like BMW have an oversupply of 520i since the Tesla Model 3 shipped. BMW possibly trying and steal some sales before the Model 3 arrives here in 6 months.

      • Tesla Model 3 hasn't got a sell price in Australia yet, where are you getting shipped from for Australia?

  • RRP Recommended Drive Away Price

    $97,454.90

    Nice discount

  • Is it true BMWs and Mercs have horrendous maint costs post warranty?

Heard some horror stories from 7 year old Audis and Volvos.

    • -1

In Europe, Audis don't have the same aura they seem to have here. Infact I read a report recently, I'll try finding it and post the link, Audi ranked very poorly on reliability outside the top 25 brands I recall.
Volvo was more encouraging as the new owners (Geely-China), resurrected it and was throwing money into their budget, hence the new found success. I believe they've had 3 cars of the year awards in a row in Aus. IF you believe or pay weight to these 'COTY awards'.
If you like them, Mazda is the no brainer at the moment.
Servicing, I'd go independent if I end up buying a Volvo in the future.

    • look how much to replace a headlight, that is what put me off

      • I know, a friend has a C200 or 250 Merc. Circa ,$65k when bought ex-demo.
$2500.00 for One X headlight replacement.
Note to self…' buy headlight protectors', for a couple of hunny even if they look a little ugly, and may distort the 'perfect' projection of the OEM lamp/LED, whatever it brings.

    • +1

@domcc1 If you're sill around view this, something along what I mentioned (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u76SMKCT_0k)

      • Yeah - still here - wow, BMW and Audi, not good! Merc seemed to be middle of the road.

Interestingly neither Infiniti nor Lexus were on the survey at all. I would think these two brands would perform really well (Nissan and Toyota's reliable and part prices).

        • I got a neg for my comment above, (BMW and or Euro car dealerships trolling this OzB post are they?). LOL.

        • Infinity doesn't rate here does it, the new QX50 looks good (depending on what model exactly they bring)… transmission not sure, I think it's much bigger in the US than Europe, IMO they should buy their way into the market, I'd seriously considered Q50, reviews well, but it's too small really the Q70 doesn't review well, and way too expensive.
Lexus I would've thought would be mentioned for sure. IMO currently Lexus line up styling I find boring, nothing really grabs me about them.

  • no deal bmw needs to be above 80k for investment purposes

    • +1

You can add a first aid kit to bring it over 80k.

  • +2

Showed this to the boss. Buying a couple of them for the company. No Joke.

    Thanks OP

    • Actually ?

      • +1

        Yep.
We've already got 3 520 in our Melbourne fleet, but they're all 2015. Was time to replace them anyways.

        • Were you/your company able to at least get the price advertised with this deal, if not better?

          • @Partyboyz: We got a better deal with more options and more warranty.
Black with luxury pack like above and the tech pack, along with Sunroof as well.

            • @hellbent: Thank you for your reply, I used to based in VIC, I wonder will they accept/offer the same deal here in QLD, really interested with this tbh.

  • is sunroof included?

  • Finally a deal worthy for Westpac Investment Analysts.

  • Has anyone called or know what the 'incredible options and added features' that are mentioned on the add actually are?
Have they put any actual extras from their options list. ie I know the std entry level which I believe it's what this is, does not have heated steering wheel or rear seats sunblinds, at this price point I would've thought it would have those 2 included.
Ive been banging on about Mazda, IMO with due credit to them. I know I refer to a SUV, but the CX9 'azami' or new 'azami LE' UNDER 70K! Brings all these and more (ie Cooling front seats in Nappa Leather) IMHO a good looking and well built car.

  • And the actual Subaru test drive procedure as verified buy a member of the public.

    Link to said information

  • Has anyone been able to get 15-20% off on any BMW?

  • Great deal, would snap one up if i was in the market.
Agree with the power to weight ration on the 3 vs 5 but my 320 with a burger thing plug n play brings it to same specs of the 328i and i would say its got plenty of power for the average soccer mum driving in the city, not a bad engine at all.

Plus the tech in the G30 is pretty good, driven the e200 overseas and thats not too bad either, 4 of us in the car wagon full of suitcases still went up Swiss apps fine.

  • How does it compare to the e class?

    • Better

      • Is the electronics issues a real concern?

  • Is it easier to bargain down on a demonstrator rather than a new vehicle?

I heard from 'someone' that BMW staff members can get 30% discount on used vehicles during certain times of the year. Can anyone confirm this??

    • I heard from 'someone' that BMW staff members can get 30% discount on used vehicles during certain times of the year. Can anyone confirm this??

Not to be rude but if you are eligible then you would know the answer cos you'll be a staff. If you dont know the answer you can't get it anyway so what's the point to know?
