    so cheap!

    • +1

Yea amazing value, prob at a 25% discount. Its now the same price as that peasent 3 series.

      • +12

Yes, I feel sorry for the poor "peasants" having to make do with the 3 Series.

      • LOL "peasant". There are reasons people buy a 3 series over a 5 other apart from it being cheaper. Better handling and power to weight ratio due to being smaller is one reason, not that base engine 320i/520i buyers probably care about that. Personally wouldn't take a 5 series over a 3 (even if it was cheaper) unless I had kids.

        • +1

Being a previous 3 series owner (6cyl not those ghastly 4's), I would have agreed with you. But since owning a 5 series, the difference both around the suburbs and on long trips is marked.

After a 6 hour drive I no longer feel like I need to unfold myself once I've arrived; and after 20 minutes driving around the ridiculously convoluted one way system of suburban streets I no longer feel like I've just been to arm day at the gym.

Or maybe I'm just getting old…

        • +2

          Almost in the positive …

    • +1

Gumtree only allows 1 free listing per account, have you got multiple?

      • Both cars advertised in same listing maybe?

      • He paid maybe?

    • +3

I'll be contacting you via Gumtree. I'm afraid the best I can do is $500. Can you deliver it to me for this price we have now negotiated? Ta.

    • +9

I am a marine engineer working offshore, can you ship the car to me? I need you to transfer $800 to me via western union so you can receive the funds to your PayPal…. Sounds legit right? lol

Sorry I only deal with iTunes

  • +2

I wonder if they'll price match in sydney

  • Why is the engine so small?

    • +64

It's easier to see the badge when they drive slow.

    • +7

      Like the ecoboost mustang?

It's an entry level option for the people who want the look and nothing else. Nothing wrong with it.

    • safety concern

    • +1

Haven't looked but long gone as the days the badge reflected engine size, albeit closer to accurate at these ranks! How about the mighty Merc A45! With a 2 litre..

    • It's the model you buy when you want to tell your friends and relatives you've bought a 5 series Bimmer

There is dental floss & eucalyptus oil in the glove box for badge removal

  • I can't see it on the promotions page

  • +1

For a brand new with 5yrs servicing under 70K. It definitely has my vote !!

    • Basic means Basic, read fine print

  • +1

Check if a new update is due later this year early next, if it is $70k turn to $40,000s pretty quick over 2 years, bmw resale are shit

    • +25

It will go lower than $40,000 in a few years, new model or not. No-one wants a BMW out of warranty.

      • any reason why? I'm tempted to buy but considering it to sell after 5 years or so.

        • +15

          They are endless money pits.

          • @Grok: save 4 the lectric version

          • @Grok: SamR is your view that Euro cars have costly maint post 5 years?

Have heard this from some friends, keen to hear more stories.

Thought is it's not a well known thing because most people are too proud to admit it.

            • +2

@MementoMori: It's just that euro cars usually have more tech than your basic Corolla. And even if your Corolla now has parking sensors, they have probably been standard on a Lexus for 5 years and have lots of KMs behind them to prove them reliable. Euros (especially upmarket ones) will put new stuff on straight away without as much concern for reliability.

              • +5

                @miicah:

It's just that euro cars usually have more tech than your basic Corolla.

                True 30 years ago.

These days it's just manufacturers ticking checkboxes on the Denso, Bosch, Aisin, Continental, ZF, Delphi and dozens more manufacturer order sheets.

The Germans haven't made reliable or quality cars for nearly 2 decades, but they fill them with proprietary equipment so you're forced to visit the stealership to bend over and pay 3-10x more than a Korean or Japanese car for equivalent (but more frequent) repairs.

Just ask any Allianz or RAC roadside assistance tech which brands need most tows.

        • +3

Cars lose ~20% value per year. The higher the initial price, the more value it loses.

Also luxury german brands cost a lot to maintain after warranty. They aren't as reliable and when parts break they cost a lot more to repair than other makes. This is not a concern to the target market who changes their car over every 3 years anyway. It will be a concern for the next buyer though who scored a great deal and got the dream car they'd never be able to afford new.

          • +3

@lostn: Lol. German brands aren't as reliable? I have had only one BMW fail on me and that was due to electrics. It was also 35 years old at the time. That is out of 3 BMWs, 2 Mercedes and a Volkswagen.

According to Consumer Reports the Top 10 most reliable auto brands are:
            1.Lexus
            2.Toyota
            3.Mazda
            4.Subaru
            5.Kia
            6.Infiniti
            7.Audi
            8.BMW
            9.Mini
            10.Hyundai
            So that's 7, 8 and 9 which are German.

Versus top 10 least reliable brands:
            1.Volvo
            2.Cadillac
            3.Tesla
            4.Ram
            5.GMC
            6.Chrysler
            7.Chevrolet
            8.Jeep
            9.Dodge
            10.Lincoln
            Of which NONE are German.

            • +2

              @Tiggrrrrr:

Lol. German brands aren't as reliable?

Correct. As your list shows, they aren't as reliable as Japanese/Korean brands, with 6 in front of them. They round out 3 of the bottom 4 places in the top 10, which is not too bad, but aren't "as" reliable. Where do Mercedes and Porche place?

I have had only one BMW fail on me and that was due to electrics.

Reliability data is not based exclusively on electronic failure. If your car was 35 years old, back then cars were a lot simpler with fewer electronics and less over-engineering than today. It seems like you are only counting major failure. Reliability studies count even minor faults. They also don't weigh up the severity of a fault.

How much did it cost to fix your car? Have you compared the repair cost for the same kind of fault with other makes?

Your sample size of 6 cars is also what's called a statistical irrelevance. Especially without key information such as how old the cars were and how long you kept them for. It is basically anecdotal evidence which has little value in statistics.

Versus top 10 least reliable brands:

I didn't say they were at the very bottom. What these reports don't factor in is what type of faults they are, and how expensive they are to fix. Minor and major faults are given equal weight.

When you post the bottom 10, it's not a critical analysis. It only shows that in their report, the german brands don't fall into the 10 worst places. If they collected data on every single make, there are a lot fewer german brands than there are total brands in the world, so falling into the very bottom is actually quite hard statistically.

              • @lostn: Your statement was that they aren't as reliable as other makes. This without any kind of evidentiary basis.

To be specific, this post is specifically talking about BMW. So in that sense the fact it is 8 of top 10 and not in the bottom 10, are you saying if it isn't a Lexus or Toyota then it isn't as reliable as other makes? Because, well Mazda, isn't as reliable as other makes.

As far as I know, I didn't collate the data, that was just one of many statistical surveys out there. This one is based on feedback from car owners: Consumer Reports used more than 500,000 responses to its annual survey, and used the data from the 2000-2017 model years. Maybe 17 years is just a short span? Maybe half a million responses is not enough? Maybe it is better to go by the vagaries cast by a handful of people on OzBargain with no actual specifics?

My opinion is that cars will fail if people don't take care of them; and that the majority of "horror" stories are due to poor/incorrect vehicle maintenance. e.g. The most frequent replacement on a Mercedes CLS class is the brake motors, due to brake pads not being replaced once worn. However, other than the last point about the Mercedes CLS class, I can't make back up that statement with evidence, so I'm not going to make it. Instead I will say that "in my experience" owning a BMW, Mercedes or Volkswagen does not have to be fraught with unreliability and vehicle failure. And although parts can be expensive in Australia, but with the wonder of the internet parts are available globally at a fraction of the price.

All that aside, I am not disagreeing regarding cost to fix if something does need fixing (locally). Just the use of the term "reliability".
My statement would be that American cars are the most unreliable…

How many BMWs have you owned? Or German cars in general? Given your statement then it must be substantially greater than 6.

            • +2

@Tiggrrrrr: I worked a short time for BMW way-way back. Those things were dropping like flies. Some of the repair bills we were writing up could have bought a 2 year old Corolla. I was at the city workshop and we had heaps of new professionals (esp solicitors) that had bought 3ers and they used to turn pale.

M3 & M5 the amount of issues with them. M5 V10 is one of the few cars I know that you change the big end bearings as preventive maintenance (Porsche IMS bearing is the other that comes to mind).

They aren't all POS but they aren't trouble free either.

edit: Statistically I probably should expect to see only bad cars as we were a workshop.

I love Bimmers but can't bring myself to buy one.

              • @brad1-8tsi: Cheers brad. Nice to here some detailed feedback.

I know the 3 series E46 were notoriously bad, mainly due to the shocking engine (co-designed with Peugeot I believe?). But I had thought that since the E90's (2010 onward) this had improved? In saying that I only had an E91 for a little while before swapping to a 5 series (to date only issue was the heated side mirrors got a bit cloudy so had to replace them. As for the M series, yes I have heard they have been fraught with issues with, particularly rod bearings. But we aren't talking about the high performance vehicles here, otherwise we would mention the Nissan GTR which was rated as one of the most expensive vehicles to maintain at over $2500 a year.

I guess I was focussing on the fact this post was related to the 520i. I know that it's a (crappy) 4 cylinder engine, but the previous run of 520i had the N20 engine which was on the Top 10 engines list in 2012. Not sure about the new engine.

                • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: Among my mates there are lots of Bimmers. Past/current rides: 3x M3s, 1x M5, 2x 330i, 130M, 3er diesel wagon, X5 and others that slip my mind. I think they all go to the same mech these days (Metro Mechanical) and as long as you accept that your hi performance car needs a bit more spent on maintenance then the love affair will be great.

                  I just can't do it.

So many things goes wrong with BMWs when they are around 5+ years. So many sensors and electronics issues

    • +1

But this is for brand new not a used car? Not sure how that is relevant. Majority will sell it in 5 years or less.

      • -2

Things start to fall apart just after 3 years in a bmw. If your very lucky you might be able to hold on for 3 yrs

        • I am curious to know how what this is based on?

    • +2

BMW is on the same list as Volkswagen: Great to own during the warranty period, but make sure you sell before it expires. There are many people out there that will pay top dollar for a five year old German car. These people haven't been burned by the maintenance costs yet.

  • +13

Options on BMWs are horrendous. I wonder if this comes with wheels.

  • -5

    What's the deal?

520i 2018 goes for $70k driveaway before negotiating. Usually abit of pressure bring a further 5-10% down. Our best effort was 15% off asking price for a car.

5 year servicing is worth app $3k.

Might be a deal for ones that are not bothered to look. Definitely not a deal who are keen negotiators.

A good example is the new a250. (Supposedly short on supply) RRP is cir 52-55k. People are actually paying 46k.

    • +13

520i 2018 goes for $70k driveaway before negotiating

I'm sorry, where did you get this information - I just checked the driveaway calculator, and the driveaway price for a base model 520i is $99,632.60 in VIC.

      Please confirm?

        • +3

What’s your source then, for $70k driveaway?

        • +2

OP should add real MSRP and discount percentage to the post. It's basically 30% off the regular price. Deal is a deal.

    • @googleyahoo69 i Call BS!

    • +1

Dont let the truth get in front of BMW owners, they're kinda sensitive.

  • +1

I was looking at the XC60 Volvo around this price, CX9 but too big, the X3 was a little pricey. mmm manufacturers must be feeling the downturn too (as property).
I gotta look at this, I may have to live with an X5 after all.
Hopefully it will run for at least a couple of weeks as I can only get to a dealership then.
OP, is it targetted, I can't find it on the BMW site either (in Melbourne).

I asked the mods to put this in the link as opposed to the website as i cant edit it myself.

The say they only secured a limited number so maybe the email only went to customers if their south melb branch. If your X5 from there check email.

      • Oh man, quickly read your post but saw the current picture showing an X5… Oh well, not as good as I thought… No Deal!

          • @Bryanalves: this means Paul has ONE to bait…

          • @Bryanalves: I meant picture On post is of the X5, so no Deal for me. As someone else mentioned, back seats are tiny, I would not go that far, but not that great for tallish people. My daughters are 15and 10yo. Both almost 170 cm tall, so future wise not suitable.
I hope people that jump on this deal , still bargain on their trade ins etc. For a good changeover figure and don't act desperate.
I was told final offer 61k changeover when negotiating recently, 5 or 10 min later I was offered a 'crazy' 59k…I quote 'one day only, don't come back Monday asking for this deal'
They can move, PUSH THEM MoFos!
            BTW, I still walked away.

        • It's a X7

          • @CDG: X7,X5 potato… potato!
Urghh! It doesn't work when you type it. You know what I mean.
I got confused and thought the deal was for an X5, not a 5 series sedan.

@ozeebee: Lot of Novated Fleeced BMW owners it seems, much jelly love it.

Renting (lease) a base model BMW that depreciates at a rate of 50-60% in 4 years is dumb. Buyers here will see $40K disappear in 3-4 years and be left with a mediocre car. if it was a M2 then it be a different story.

            • +5

@Bid Sniper: Never actually owned a BMW. Not jelly at all. :)

The way you describe your $39k STI only costing $25k is funny though.

            • +3

@Bid Sniper: Literally no one here is defending their BMWs. This is OzBargain. No one has a BMW.

We're just amused at you saying a $39k car was only $25k because you traded in your old car for $14k.

It's like me saying my new million dollar house was only $600k (because I sold my old place for $400k).

              • -1

@Haters.Inc: I said all up but see your point.

But it seems all comments not calling this 70k base model BMW the bargain or the century being neg here.

                • @Bid Sniper: Going by your genius calcs, if I sell my current car for $30k, it means I can claim this BMW cos me $40k right?

What a bargain! Wow thanks for your help buddy

        • +2

Plain and simple - you're a farking idiot!

I hope not all WRX drivers are so mathematically…let's say…inclined.

Also, comparing cars just on speed…I'd hope you're still in your teenage years…otherwise life might be a bit of a battle.

        • do you even math, bro?

    • Yeah $25k wth? How did you manage that?

    • +4

Cool man. Upload the contract of sale for us so I can go buy an STI for $25,000. In the meantime I'm going to book my 660nm tune.

Also, these engines are just de-tuned from the factory to give perceived value to the more expensive models.
My 1 series has the exact same engine and makes 200kw/400nm after a 15 minute remap.
