decent price after picking it up a few weeks ago from the price error

It says detachable cable on the JB Hifi site but it doesn't

    • +6

All cables are detachable, but some are harder to re-attach…

Enjoying mine from the last deal.

Screen is great, tracking is inferior to the Vive / Rift. Causes some problems with Beat Saber when you get wide with the swings for example.

    • Can confirm. If you're paying full price ($599) I'd pay a little more and get vive/rift. To me it's not bad, just not amazing, but for $99 or $299 it's a good price in comparison.

I'm on the fence about this one. I'd love a vr headset for my pc but I think I'll wait till the rift s that's supposed to be coming around the end of the month. It's going to be more expensive obviously but it has 5 cameras for inside out tracking as opposed to 2 on the wmr headsets.

    • Agreed. I was thinking about getting this at first but after seeing i missed a deal at $99 i realised at this price i will still wait for the new Rift S as it will be worth that bit extra. But thought would post the deal here anyway in case this price is enough for someone to get into VR

      • it's still a great entry price to get into VR

I only have medium specs (gtx970) but am able to get 90hz with most of the apps like beatsaber, superhot etc even watched a movie in Bigscreen, very immersive.\

if you do sim racing, this is more than enough

        • It's ideal for racing games - that's why I got one (at $99). I have a Vive - but my lighthouses are fixed in the games room, but to play racing games I need to attach my wheel to the desk in the study.

But, I've had issues getting the view correct - in Project Cars 2 I'm always way too high.

          • @AdrianW: any config in the app?
in beatsaber, you can adjust the room in the settings.

Yes, but the Valve Index is coming - full announcement in May, release in mid-June.

      • Came here to say this.
I need a new computer. Going to wait for the release of the Index to figure out what I can get as I really wanna get into VR.
Saw the recent game play for Boneworks and…well….I needed some new pants ;)

I feel it is over priced as I got one for $100 recently. It also looks like Lenovo is getting out of VR as this product isn't listed on any of its sites anymore.

The Rift S is made in partnership with Lenovo, so definitely not out of VR.

    • That was a pricing error, so hardly fair to compare this price to it.

Still very good value at $299. I was lucky enough to pickup two from the $99 offer from couple of weeks ago, if was buying now I'd still go for one at $299.

    • Same and same.

      • ditto

        • Any of you lovely people want on-sell one of them?

          • @gdiddy7: No kidding. No wonder they sold out so fast.

I got one of these during the $99 pricing error. I have a Rift as my main VR headset so can compare the two.

    • Comfort wise it's not too bad, the HUD isn't particularly heavy so the lack of a top strap isn't really an issue.
    • It does let a little more light in than the Rift, but you don't notice that after a while and if you have nothing to compare it to you won't notice it at all.
    • I did find that when getting it in the best position for me in terms of comfort and view, it pinched my nose and I had to adjust it to breathe normally.
    • The image quality is good, but I felt that you had to move your head more. With the Rift I could move my eyes around, but with this one things blur a bit when they aren't in the centre of the screen.
    • There are more pixels per eye than the Rift and the area I noticed this the most was with loading up YouTube or Netflix. The screen door effect was reduced and I'd actually prefer watching a movie on the Explorer.
    • The controllers tracked really quite well and as far as I could tell, within the full range of my vision. edit - I should have added one negative of the tracking I found was in high speed movement. To throw things I had to slow down a little from what I would do using the Rift.
    • HUD position tracking was also really quite good.
    • The controllers weren't as comfortable as the Rift's Touch controllers, and don't include some of the sensors. I play a bit of PokerStars VR and it was slightly more awkward to do what I wanted e.g. to point a finger with the Rift you just point your finger, this you had to push up on the pad.
    • I tried it with my integrated GPU as it supposedly doesn't need a dedicated card. It worked ok, though this is a 6 year old motherboard and cpu, newer machines might be even better. A dedicated card would be preferred though.
    • Set up (on Win 10) was extremely simple, no problems at all.
    • Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR (https://store.steampowered.com/app/719950/Windows_Mixed_Real…) is a must. I tried out a few of my Steam games and they worked well.

All up, I think this is a great intro to VR and well worth it at $299 if you aren't already playing around in VR.

    • I got one for $99 deal as well, set it up in a breeze but haven’t touched it since, can any one of the kind folks guide me how to watch the Netflix or movie on the big screen? Thanks

      • +1

use the Bigscreen app in SteamVR for the best experience.

You can make your own room and watch your desktop.

        https://bigscreenvr.com/
        https://store.steampowered.com/app/457550/Bigscreen_Beta/

make sure to use a browser that doesn't use Netflix DRM

In addition to impoze's suggestion for Bigscreen, when you get into the default area you can hit the button on the controller and bring apps etc into the world, one of those is your desktop so you can put whatever is on your screen onto a virtual screen in VR, and you can size this how you wish.

  • Google Earth in VR is the best. I bought one of these a year or two ago, and love using it.

    • i'll check it out, it doesn't give an option apart from vive or rift, which one to go for for wmr?

      • I had it already for the Vive - it works fine with the Explorer, but the virtual controls map to the physical locations of the Vive wand buttons - e.g. the menu button on the WMR controllers is in a totally different location to the Vive - just needs getting used to.

  • Will this play Job Simulator? My kids are begging to play that

    • I can't see why not - it plays other steam games fine.
