I shouldn't have looked at ozbargain today.

More cheap drives with CR bonus … Instabuy!

    Damn you!

  • Who do I contact to get aus plug?

    • +4

WD tech support, call their 1800 AU number.

Best to register the drive to make it easier.

      • +1

After I receive it I call them? I can't get it shipped with an aus plug?

        • yes, after you receive it.

          it comes pretty quickly though.

          • +1

@impoze: in good old ozbargain fashion, is it free?

            • +1

              @sushimaster: yes, it's shipped free.

              • @impoze: Excellent thanks will give them a call when it arrives ,not going to be shipped for a month according to amazon :(

  • +1

For anyone thinking of shucking, you should do a bad sector scan beforehand to ensure the integrity of the drive.

I don't remember the method but hopefully, someone here can post how to do it??

You basically use software to scan to every sector of the drive to make sure there are no bad sectors, this will enable you to do a warranty claim before the drive is shucked to save you the hassle of the drive dying early in its life cycle and trying to make a claim on a drive where the case has been tampered with potentially voiding the warranty.

    • problem is that test would take ages since it is 10TB

Any idea how long this test would take?
Testing each sector, I would asssume take quite some time

      • is a quick scan enough?

      • +2

If you're going to shuck the drive, it's worth waiting for an all-clear. I'd guesstimate two days to scan.

      • +3

As @Necron said, does not matter how long it takes, will be worth it.

I am unsure how long, as I said, I have heard of this, but never done it and don't remember how to.

2 days seems like it may be accurate, so it may not be "quick" but you will be waiting over a month for the drive, 2 more days shouldn't hurt but data loss and an invalid warranty claim probably will ;)

If anyone knows the method and software, please post

        • +4

HDDScan, free and no installation required.

        • so you never shucked your hdd
or you have shucked but never did the bad sector scan..

whilst i did know about importance of testing the entire hdd for bad sector prior to shucking.. (this was mention in some other websites)
the reality is that it takes so long
          that i didn't bother…
I think for most people this would also be the case.

Also what about doing a simple chkdks in cmd?
This is a much faster scan, but not as thorough as a full bad sector scan..

        • +1

I use H2testw, traditionally used for checking for 'fake' usb drives by writing files to 100% of the drive (minus file system overheads) and then reading it all back in to validate.

Works perfectly good for standard HDDs, you can run 2 copies in parallel if say you bought 2 drives

          • @Tigerhacker: would doing a chkdsk in command prompt be good enough?

            • +3

@pinkybrain: I do a full scan using WD Diagnostics Software. Takes 16 hours on a 10TB drive. Long but worth doing.

    • You would be foolish not to do this, bad sectors usually isnt a problem for a new disk. I always do a burin in test for at least the first week before i trust any data to it.

  • Thanks OP just purchased 2 via cash rewards for the 10% cashback :)

  • 10TB drive no redundancy. That's alot of data to lose…

    • +5

      Then, buy 2. 😉

      • That's why I brought two I always duplicate things I don't want to lose :)

          • @pinkybrain: Do you have half a brain?

            • @RSmith: do you not have a sense of humour?

              • @pinkybrain: I didn't neg you, so my sense of humour is still intact.

                • @RSmith: It was more about your reply comment..

in terms of neg, I don't really know and don't care who neg me.
but some people just don't have a sense of humor or can't take a joke

                  • +6

@pinkybrain: TBH, your comment wasn't humorous.

                    • -4

@RSmith: that is your opinion, not a fact..

                      some comedian tells a joke
                      some people laugh, some don't..

                      no big deal…

And TBH I don't give a shit if you didn't find it funny.

                      • @pinkybrain:

And TBH I don't give a shit if you didn't find it funny.

You obviously do, that's why you have been arguing continuously.

                        • @RSmith: no I don't give a shit that you didn't find it funny.
                          and it is not arguing..

I just replied to you cos you reply to me first
with your comment..which was an attack comment

                          Ask yourself..
Why would I care if you don't find something funny?

It doesn't make a shit difference to my life if you do or don't..

                      • @pinkybrain: Firstly your comment was toxic hence the negs
Secondly you're not funny in the slightest and guess what that's a fact
Thirdly you're extremely angry and triggered to be arguing and typing like that at 8 o'clock in the morning
Fourth you have to have the last say don't you like a teenager screaming at his Facebook.

If you truly think your comment was funny I would work on your social skills champ because they show even on the Internet.

I think we all come here for a bargain not toxic behaviour.

                        Rant over

        • Damn, not bad at all

    • Thanks but its now sold out

  • thanks OP! bought 2 :)

  • Perfect with 10% CR!! Thanks!!

  • Makes you wonder how cheap they are making them if they can sell it so low. Production costs of $50?

    • Probably

    • +1

All R&D cost - then it's cheap as with scale.

  • OK. I caved and bought one.

  • Bought one just then and tempted to buy another.

  • Man… It's over.

I removed the drives from my cart so I could apply cashback and re-add them, but they wouldn't go back in - pressing 'add to cart' or 'buy now' in any quantity just loaded an empty cart. I could refresh the page for the $220~ cost.

Just refreshed again and its back up to $370. I signed up for prime even…

    • +1

bhphotovideo deal as a consolation prize?

      • not as good a deal but better than nothing if you need it

    • Check items that you buy regularly, see if they're on Amazon. You can get great mileage with your Prime subscription.

  • +3

Gave it a miss. Not immediate urgency and these will get cheaper

  • Do they still come with different power adapter for different regions?
I recall that the plugs can be swap out? Like a two piece LEGO.

    • I think someone answered that and said no but you can write to WD and once registered your product online, ask for a local adapter to be sent out, or something like that. Gonna try it out when mine come in.

  • Gents, for anyone that has one of these drives, can we have a speed test please?

  • +1

Anyone's order coming up as dispatching on May 15 and arriving 9 - 25 May? not on back order over easter is it? The first page had someone getting an end of April delivery date…

    • Just got an email saying mine was ship during the night and arriving on the 8th.

  • Man, I keep missing these. If anyone knows of any decent deals on 8TB or 10TB drives at the moment, let me know, I need to buy a few.

    • The WD 8TB elements is selling for $217.57 on amazon.com.au shipped from US.

  • +1

Just delivered. Pretty impressed with the order-to-delivered speed!

    • May I ask what time when you placed the order?

      • +1

        Approximately 6.10PM on Monday.

  • +1

Was a bastard shucking this thing. For future reference the drive is a WD100EZAZ-11TDBA0 manufactured on 6 Jan 2019 and has the 3.3v pin issue.

    • Can you use this drive internally at all?

      • +1

You need to mod the 3.3v pin in order to work as an internal drive for PC.

    • +3

Also confirmed that mine are the EZAZ models. These are the helium based drives which are considered the better ones so a good buy. Testing each one now. Will shuck once they pass. Testing takes 16hrs per drive.

      • same EZAZ model in my two mybooks, i tested them together with different softwares takes about 15 hrs

      • How do you know the drive model before shucking?

  • Huh, first time camelcamelcamel didn't report the price
    https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/Book-Desktop-External-Hard-Dr…

  • Anyone else just get an email saying their orders been delayed due to insufficient stock? Estimated delivery now 31st may…

  • +1

    Received mine thanks.

  • I received today, but it didn't come with Aussie plug, how can I use it? any suggestion dudes? Please…

    • +1

Other comments on this thread suggest ringing WD support and they'll send one out for free. Haven't done it myself but comments suggest registering your product first and having your serial number ready. I'm not sure what you have to say maybe just tell them that you bought it and it only has US plug?
      1-800-429-861

  • So I plugged my units in with a travel adapter, and they wont turn on or show up with the PC. Dead drives?

  • try flipping the brick over, ie - reverse polarity, also pop your ear on the drive, you'll hear it if it's on..

Got mine today, running full scan, about 15h, before shucking…

    • What software you scanning with?

  • +1

the free WD software from WD directly … https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=3&lang=en

  • Did anyone receive theirs in a bigger box without padding? so the product box was sliding up and down, quite a bit of movement. Quite worried about what it may of done to the drives life span?

    • Thats pretty poor, I would be doing a full scan of the drive if I was you. Hope mine doesn't arrive like that.

  • +1

If you haven't gotten yours delivered yet due to the item being out of stock in the states, complain to amazon and get yourself a $10 credit!

    • Where about's can you complain?

    • I haven't received mine yet though I did just receive tracking how do I know if it got delayed? Others seem to have received theirs two weeks ago and I ordered on the 15th

  • Can anyone please link me up to what to get from Jaycar or similar stores for the power supply to make it work here?

    • Not exactly answering your question, but if you contact WD they'll probably send you out one for free. All I had to tell them was it came with a US plug instead of an Aus and I bought it from Amazon.

      • Take long to come?

        • Probably took around a week to arrive.

  • My two just shipped today. Tracking it is telling me it will arrive today too, but Amazon said 17 May.

    • Yeah I'm getting the same thing. Who is your courier?
