Also 6TB available for $153 AUD
Also won't have to wait 1-4 weeks for shipment like the 10TB

    • FYI 6tb or less will most likely have blue drive inside. If shucking.

      • yeah most likely blue drives, I prefer the while label red drives

    • The 6TB is better value for money I believe. $153 is a really good price for 6TB, a year ago you'd have to get lucky to get 4Tb for that price, if even.

    • By the time it arrives i will actually need it. 200 IQ

    • It's what I got :)

    • Ordered 6TB, thanks!

  • Have updated link - should work now.

  • -7

Waiting for it to drop to $200 AUD

      ok

  • +3

Shuckable? Anyone got any idea what drives are inside?

    • There is a thread on Reddit with some links - but no definitive answer.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/9j3xji/shuckab…

Would be great if they are WD reds inside.

      • +4

They are reds with white labels and the 3.3v issue.

    • Reddit thread says some are helium filled, some are air filled.

I'm not taking chances. Air filled is kiss of death for NAS.

    • +1

I bought one from Amazon last month.

      It has a WD100EMAZ-00WJTA0 5400rpm drive inside.

      • nice Helium

      • +1

I bought two from newegg during the cyber monday sales and got two WD100EMAZ-00WJTA0 inside.

When i shucked the first of mine it was different mounting inside compared to the videos of other people shucking theirs online. It had 1x1x3cm piece of rubber in each corner of the shell to hold the drive in place. The shell also came apart very easily which was nice.

I'd be curious to know what your was like if you shucked it.

        • FWIW, the Elements enclosure is not identical to the easyStore enclosure.

          EasyStore:

          no power button

hex screws, I want to say 2mm, don't remember

drive is suspended inside the enclosure via circular grommets on the hex screws, relatively easy to wedge out, but

complete pain in the ass to open the enclosure. If I hadn't done it on the couch, my drive would've gone flying and hit the floor before I ever used it.

          Elements:

          power button on the back

much easier to shuck for some reason, the clips on the side are less rigid, and the clips on the top are easier to just slide backwards

harder to get the drive out of the enclosure once it's open, anti vibration grommets in all 4 corners

there's a metal plate surrounding the USB port

          Only philips head screws involved

Damn…I posted this as a comment in post earlier today!!

Probably should have gotten a mention or something

    • Yeah - I think its the same deal. Better to order from Amazon Australia though, as you get free shipping with Prime.

    • So it's a good deal. Should've posted it.

  • Covered by warranty in Australia?

    • ask amazon

      • I've asked, their response was rubbish. Basically said it's based on the 1Year warranty but they will do "Their best" to assist outside of that 1 year

        • suggest you ask them to confirm that with Australian regulations on reasonable since the company selling them here is amazon.au and shipping them from amazon.us. The price is not the same as direct shipping from the us via amazon.com so they are really the company selling them. if they insist on quoting a different warrant period to oceania for wd then they won't be selling many after that gets out….

        • Which basically means 1 year unless you're willing to go the distance in small claims. IANAL but i believe you can actually pursue a longer warranty claim if you're willing to go through small claims as local retailers cannot exclude reasonable warranty periods for products that they sell. Mostly meant to apply to retailers selling no mane brands but i think it would apply here to Amazon Australia specifically though i guess this hasn't been tested yet.

I bought two and am planning to stress test it for a week to see if it will last - i reckon once it passes that mark it should be ok.

          • @bpop99: very few states have small claims left so everyone is on their jack jones. Stress testing these will run them hot - very hot. you should be careful

first thing is to see what drive inside, then act accordingly

If ordered via Amazon AU it is supplied by Amazon US via the Amazon Global Store. Read this link for the T&Cs for the Amazon Global Store T&Cs (Terms and Conditions) which should explain everything.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=…

Bear in mind that you are covered under the ACL (Australian Consumer Law), the T&Cs explain the varous policies and what do do e.g. if the goods are shipped and received D.O.A. (Dead On Arrival) and what processes are needed to follow to obtain a R.A. (Returns Authorisation). It is all very straighforward.

For WD products, their after sale warranty and technical service are excellent and far superior in my experience to Seagate.

By the way, this product will be supplied with the US AC power cable and plug. Upon receipt of product, call WD on their Australian 1800 tech support number (have product model no. and serial no. at hand) and they will ship to you overnight an Australian cable. I have down this on a few occasions and the cables arrive from Vietnanm or Thailand within a couple of days. Else, if urgent slip down to Jaycar or similar and purchase one for a couple of bucks. (Check the voltage first etc. They are usually set for US 110 volts by default).

The WD Elements are good units. I still have one working that is now 10 years old.

      Cheers and beers ;)

      • excellent post thankyou

      • Cheers mate - this is why i check Ozbargain before i buy

    • RMA (it's to Singapore anyway) should be fine.

    • +1

      It's a costly circlejerk.

I bought a 16tb mybook from amazon Germany. I crapped at 35mths. After finay finding how to lodge an RMA, I got sick of waiting & worried about 36mth cutoff, I found it magically disappeared. Lodged again, and got a printable label to Vietnam, at my cost, and 1 week left for it to get there!! No phone number, online chat or local contact.

I've since seen people discuss their Aussie rights, and insisting on them arranging pickup & payment. Mixed success.

Replaced in 1week with latest model & firmware. No argument or explanation.

  • Thanks OP, just ordered one for $250 with Prime

  • +2

Warranty is big problem. I have my Toshiba hard drive dead after two years and Amazon could do nothing. Never buy these without three years warranty.

    • -3

yeah I got really negged for warning about Toshibas - amazon are way 2 crap these days on way 2 many things…

      • +1

How is it an Amazon problem that Toshiba drives have issues?

        Also:

        2 ≠ too

Another thing I have noticed is that at the time of my comment, Tonyusq has no negs for warning about Toshiba drives whilst you have 2 negs. I think you are being negged for other reason(s)…

        • 2 right!

  • Finally i got one of these deals in time.

  • +1

Hmmmm $25 cheaper than the one I ordered last year

  • What are these 8TB drives like in comparison? Good drives inside?

    Seagate Expansion 8TB Desktop $218.91

    WD 8TB Elements Desktop $218.91

  • +5

I recently shucked the 8tb WD Elements - bought it for 215$ shipped from Amazon AU.
Inside was a WD White Label Red drive - Air version
There is a helium version but not sure if they still put them in the 8tb anymore.

WD80EMAZ-00WTJA0 for Helium and WD80EMAZ-00M9AA0 for Air.

I dont have the 3.3v issue as i place this in my USB enclosure, it shouldnt be a problem for NAS like QNAP/Synology.
Only a problem if its directly connected to the PSU

I ordered a 10tb just now, so keen to see whats inside.

Also before shucking I make sure to do error/surface scan testing before opening it up.

    • Thanks for the info, good information.

    • +1

what app do you use to test the drive?

      • +1

You can use CrystalDiskInfo/Mark for basics
Than use something like HD Tune,HD Sentinel for more aggressive testing.

        • how many hours did 8tb take for surface testing?

    • Sorry, what do you mean by shucking

      • +3

Taking out the drive from the external case. So I can place it somewhere else, inside a NAS/better enclosure with cooling options.

    • +1

reckon the 10tb elements will be air as well..

      • Yeah most likely, but I dont mind.

        • Is it generally thought not to put an air version into a NAS?

          • +1

@7hil: Helium runs cooler and Backblaze says slightly more reliable.

            https://www.backblaze.com/blog/helium-filled-hard-drive-fail…

            • @[Deactivated]: My NAS is generally turned on for a few hours at a time though. Never 24/7. I reckon air would probably be pretty safe for that kind of usage.

PS Just checked and the 4 X 6TB WD60EFRX Reds I have in there now are all Air drives anyway.

  • Anyone used this or similar as a standalone PLEX server?

    • +1

Sorry this is a Hard-drive, you will need a complete computer to run Plex, lol

The read Speeds will should be fine, 100mbs most likely so maybe 5 or 8 streams at once

  • Would these have issues if i take the hdd out and use it in my desktop?

    • +1

The only issue you may encounter is the 3.3v issue, which is a very easy fix - google it

      • I read that you can use a molex to sata power adaptor through a molex from the PSU and it should be fine. That's probably the best way to over come the 3.3v issue.

It's only a few dollars to buy one of those cables and it doesn't cause any modification to the drive at all.

        • or you can just use tape :p

        • Don't forget, molex to sata, lose your data.

          • @Vool: How do you lose the data?. As far as i'm aware the WD Elements Desktop drive model doesn't use data encryption so there should be no data loss shucking the internal 3.5" hard drive out of the enclosure and connecting it through a molex to sata adapter through a desktop PC. Only the WD My Book Desktop drive does data encryption.

            • @hollykryten: I think he meant the case with the cheap molex to sata cables catching on fire

      • +1

        Easy 3.3v fix method… https://imgur.com/a/A0JXgrQ

  • About 3.3v after-shucking issue for those wondering:

  • Does anybody know if this ends at midnight? Sadly I don't have enough money on my prepaid Visa and I didn't see this until it was too late to pop down to my Aus Post. Do they take the money from the credit card straightaway guys sorry for noob question

    • Not entirely sure, amazon.com us site just recently went back to original price, so I assume time's ticking for .au to stop back ordering @ 250AUD

    • I found this out from the Seagate sales that Amazon doesn't charge your card till your order is ready to ship. In this case, since it was a backorder, my card hasn't been charged yet

  • -1

This seller does not deliver to New Zealand.

  • Has a 10tb drive ever been this price shipped from Australia not the US? Any ever drop to this price on eBay? Have some GC’s I need to use

  • -1

I'll be the one hundred and oneth

  • -1

Can order it now, what kind of drive inside? Is the Seagate one better? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/437193

    • not exactly sure what drive, but I heard seagate tend to use SMR drives, which have a slower read/write speed.

    • From what I’ve read it’s most likely a barracuda pro and Seagate don’t have any 10tb SMR drives. I’m holding out for another deal on the Seagate.

      • From what I’ve read it’s most likely a barracuda pro

Yeah from the last deal people said it is barracuda pro which I think is better.

  • +1

Anyone who got this would really appreciate some info on what drive was inside once you get it.

    • WD100EMAZ-00WJTA0

  • Cheers jan1var, ordered one yesterday. First 10TB. Exciting :D

  • $250.18 + Delivery is that AUD or USD??

    I only see $359.04 + $20.62 delivery…. am I too late?

    • that price was AUD, as the site is .au
As title says on top, out of stock.

      • Thanks… so I was late :-(

  • Had a charge go through overnight for mine. Should be shipping soon!

    • Please report back with drive inside once you receive or PM me

  • +1

  • Can't see it mentioned above - what power plug came with yours? Not surprising, i got US only.
Any recommendations on AU plug, or if WD will supply a local one?
I'm always cautious of using 'universal' plugs…
