  • Is this NBN ready?

    • Yes sir

      • For FTTN?

        • well yeah, it's a router. you still need a modem.

    • Fine for FTTP not FTTN
      See below for product information.
****PLEASE NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 'FTTN' NBN CONNECTIONS****
Please note: This model does not have a built-in modem

      • +1

Fine for FTTN, just need a modem also.

        • I don't think that was the question.
If on FTTN most people would get a router that included a modem, I would.

      • +1

        Good for FTTC too

        • and HFC.

    • +1

If your on FTTN get a Telstra Gateway Max (tg799vac) of gumtree for $10-20 and bridge it to this..

      • Exactly, the best combo.

      • Noob question here.
Does fttn = nbn in an apartment?

        • No, FTTN means fibre to the node on street and copper to your house via the existing copper telephone/ADSL line. Requires termination on a VDSL modem like the TG799 suggested above.

          • @KingJuf: What about nbn in a new apartment? Is it fttb of fttp?

  • +2

    It's been much cheaper previously.

    • +1

      correct

    • I purchased this for $176 last month.

      I highly recommend this router!

Does anyone know why the AX (Wifi 6) modems are hard to find in Australia? I believe it's got a draft version of Wifi6 so perhaps is why it's not being stocked/sold as much? Anyone used one yet and any feedback if it's worth it?

    • Never heard of a Modem version of any AX Routers yet personally…. and Modem models are less common given it's not as used throughout the world. Regardless you are always better off getting separate devices unfortunately.

      • I've been looking at the following two but they are expensive still:
        https://www.asus.com/au/Networking/RT-AX88U
        https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/arche…

Or some of the Netgear units but they just look strange:
        https://www.netgear.com/landings/wifi6/default.aspx

The TP Link seemed to offer the best bang for buck I think at around $440 after the 20% ebay code from SydneyTec as well

P.S. Should have probably said 'router' rather than 'modem' in my original post sorry…

        • +1

          That explains :)

Often Harvey Norman has exclusive rights to the top end ASUS Models, I presume that's only for physical stores as other local eBay stores have local models too…

I think that'll explain why their availability isn't so great at all…

My experience with the top end ASUS models is they are less than stable, had the top of the line Modem Router and had non stop issues, the 5ghz channel regularly disappeared entirely. It's unfortunate as when they do work they are great…. Obviously YMMV and others have had good luck.

As far as AX in general, it's probably not a bad idea to wait a little as early models are filled with problems, and I've read people having issues with the ASUS one already.

          • @scuderiarmani: Thanks scuderiarmani

I've also read some negative reviews on the Asus top end units which is a little sad… the TP links I've not really read much negative reviews yet though so perhaps they are more stable or might just not have as many users with them yet.. not too sure but I think you are right it might be best to just wait a little longer for the final AX devices to be certified before buying one…

            • +1

@Jonc: Yeah the certification thing is a big thing in my eyes too. Also apart from the S10 I'm not aware of any mainstream AX Devices either.

The thing is often ASUS has a product model that won't get updated for many years, this Router is a great example…. though they keep piling on firmware updates to their credit, it's just a shame they are often buggy as hell.

Don't get me wrong, I've looked at their AX model as well, when it launched it came with a free ROG headset which was enticing… now the AX Mesh Dual Pack is out (but only at Harvey Norman) so that's got me wanting that too…. though I read it's only available in Australia atm strangely.

I must be missing something, but it's just a router - why would you buy this, instead of the much cheaper (half the price) https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TP-Link-Archer-C1200-AC1200-1200… ?

    • +2

Because the one you linked is almost half the specs of this Asus one.

      • So what are those "features" that you miss from the cheaper one that the more expensive has?
EDIT: or get the OpenWRT ready Linksys for $103.2 to enable all the imaginable features ever: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LINKSYS-WRT1200AC-WRT-Router-Wir…
EDIT2: or the Linksys AC1900 router with 2 USB ports for $135.2. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Linksys-Max-Stream-EA7500-AC1900…
I really can't see how this is a great deal…

        • +3

I never said "features" you did, and then you expect me to find the answers for you, :|

If you think these others units are good deals post them here at Ozbargins via submitting a deal, that's what this site is all about, sometimes the community requirements don't match yours needs and that's ok.

    • For the firmware support.

      • The ASUS app is also amazing compared to the TP-Link

        • -5

I can't even remember how to set up my router - I did it once, years ago, and using it without ***ing around with it.
It's a problem if you need an app more than once for a router…

          • @ocoolio: Set bandwidth limit on connected devices and block internet
            Monitor speed traffic
Configure the internet using the app without the use of logging on the computer
            Firmware upgrade

            There's loads of features

          • -1

@ocoolio: When's the last time you updated a firmware then?

            • -7

@scuderiarmani: Maybe a few months ago? It was flashing that it found a new firmware so I said okay, install it.

See, maybe that's the difference: I don't enjoy spending time with ***ing around with IT equipment, I just prefer them to work and do something else with my time.

              • @ocoolio: Google Wifi is for you then…. that shit just works in my experience.

Often these 'higher end' gear benefit from tweaking in my experience.

I don't mind using the app to see which devices are connected, also to check my connection as I've had stability issues in the past.

This ASUS model has a great reputation on Whirlpool, Merlin Firmware is another added bonus.

    • TP Link is famous for not updating the firmware for their devices compare to other brands, like Asus.
This include security patches for the devices. Never compare Asus with TP link.

  • its been this price since the 20% started. I think ill wait, my NBN not for another 6 weeks so cant pull the trigger at this price.

  • I've had the RT-AC68U in use for over 3-4 months (since being connected to the NBN) from a previous special last year.

Since then, the 5.4Ghz band has been quite dodgy, even last night it disconnected my devices, forcing those that could back over to the 2.4Ghz, and going by a few forums it's not an isolated issue. A few times a month at least it'll just stop working, disconnecting all the devices attached to that band.

Once, it wouldn't connect back at all, and it required a firmware restore to get the devices working again.

If I could go back, I probably wouldn't get this router.

    • I get this problem a handful of times a week. If I could go back I wouldn't get it either.

    • Does the disconnection happen frequently?
Now that you've mentioned this, I've noticed this too but it only has happened to me twice in 5 months.

      • Unfortunately, frequently enough.

I notice it the most when I'm on my desktop, which isn't every night. I notice this because the internet stops working all of a sudden, then when I view local WiFi networks all of my IoT devices (e.g. Chromecast, Google Home) that were on that network are suddenly disconnected and producing their own unique WiFi signals again whilst the changeover to 2.4Ghz occurs.

According to the Router, it appears the only difference is the # of connected clients.

In the last 2-3 weeks I have definitely needed to reset it at least 2 times though.

EDIT: It appears as though Merlin may correct the WiFi issues, I might load that and see how it goes.

        • Yeah, I'd be frustrated too and hoping I won't face this many problems like u guys.

Please let me know how it goes with the Merlin firmware.

best method should be waiting for https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/353403 coming again, and buy 2 or more to build one mesh network or repeaters network. Even the repeaters on 5G Channel can achieve 700~800Mbps transfer rates, which should be enough for home NAS/TV box/file exchange between computers/ipad

    • Amazon wont ship 3rd party from usa now. So unless they change this no good

  • -1

    Great router, terrible price.

  • Managed to get the more expensive modem variant for $68 delivered from Facebook Marketplace on advice from a fallow OzBargainer. Includes all contents and only purchased a year and a half ago from Hardly Normal.

  • This is still for sale for $191 at the same ebay link but using the code PCLICK
