Turn your Samsung Flagship phone into a desktop with a Desktop EXperience (DEX). Pair it with a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse, and you will instantly have a desktop plugged into a HDMI monitor or TV.

I've been using DEX the last two years and have basically become my work PC the past two years with a whole bunch of applications for communications directly out of the phone and productivity from emails and Android Office.

Selling for $64 at Samsung so this is better than half price:

Also available from Bing Lee's Ebay:

Ebay Even Cheaper now with the 20% off PLUGS voucher - bringing it down to $23.20!

Will work out of the box for the Galaxy S9 / S10 and Note 9 Series. Older S8 and Note 8 should be supported with the latest Android Pie update that no longer requires the full DEX dock.

  • Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this just a simple USB-C to HDMI adapter?

    • +1

Not quite. It is the "official" one that the Samsung phones recognise and guaranteed to work with. The unofficial ones are hit and miss (I got two of them and they weren't great) and loses signal every so often or does not HDMI handshake properly. Some of the standard USB-C to HDMI does not even allow DEX to start up properly.

    • If it's not DEX, then you can't enter DEX mode. You can only output to the display.

      • You don't need it for note 9 and s10. Any usbc to hdmi will do.

Not sure about s9 or s8.

  • If I use this one don't need to dexpad?

Just use cable to s9+ to Tv or monitor right.?

    • Yep. Just use a BT Keyboard and Mouse (or use the Touchscreen for that). Only downside is a lack of charging but you can use wireless Qi charging pad for that.

  • Any way to make the cable longer

    • Probably using HDMI extenders. But the quality will suffer and may cause drop outs on signal.

Unbranded cables with the same spec that actually works are not cheap. For an official one at $29 is ok. $64 is asking too much.

I use DEX mode in my Tab S4. It's my preferred way to use the tablet. You don't need a cable or pad or external monitor on a tablet.

I'm not sure if I would want to use my phone this way though.

    • Different use cases. Not everyone carries their Tab around, but carry phones.

      • Yeah well, if you have a monitor lying around to use your DEX, my assumption is that you also have a desktop connected to it?

Unless you're using it on your TV. I think that's not a very good PC-like experience.

DEX is a poor man's desktop OS. Suitable if you're away from your desktop, like when you have your tab with you. If you have a phone with access to an empty monitor for some reason, that could work I guess.

If you're traveling and your Tab has the keyboard cover, I think that is less bulk to carry around than a bluetooth keyboard for your phone, plus the DEX cable.

But I always carry a Windows tab with me, so the DEX is situational use at best.

        • Again, different use cases. I do a lot of Teleconferencing and communicator style with my team at work, so I basically have an all-in-one unit coming out of my phone that connects into those tools and that I can also type messages directly in there including emails. I've hosted conferences for twenty people before out of basically my phone outputting to a projector, connected BT conferencing speaker/phone and ran presentations on my device over the internet with another dozen people. Being Cellular as well just gives instant access to the Internet and networks.
Only time when I can't use my phone is using Visio and Project - I have viewers for both but cannot create. That's where I connect into a Citrix or Terminal Server to do that sort of work.

  • $6 shipping on the eBay store, can’t add to cart on binglee website for some reason.

  • I'm always wondering the real use of this Dec. Really interesting idea but I can't find a real situation I need to use it. Anyone share please?

I've replaced my work laptop with it. I can walk into work with only my mobile phone and my desk is set up with a DEX dock, keyboard, mouse and monitor. I just plug it in and I'm working on my phone's desktop. My emails come through on the device, I can access documents, I video conference and communicate using Skype/Bluejeans/Cisco, I can access Windows using Remote Desktop / Citrix. Listen to music as I work on my QC35s that also answers phone calls.

All that takes is just my mobile phone.

Another scenario: You go overseas and you don't have to bring a laptop. Just a foldable BT keyboard and this DEX adapter and you got yourself a usable computer unit if you connect it to the hotel's TV.

It's useful once you apply it to your own situations..

      • Thanks heap for the sharing.

All of my docs and files are stored on onedrive and google drive. With whatever computer I can access and work on it without any constraint.

When travelling for work, I definitly need laptop for during working hours like meeting, so back to hotel I still have my lap with me…

How about you sometime need to leave your office room for like 10 minutes? Unplug and plug again when u r back? Is it causing any issue?

        • The new Pie updates are really good for unplugging and replugging and doesn't require a "boot" of DEX anymore so it's pretty good. It use to have some connectivity issues before but mainly because I was using a dodgy 3rd party dock/adapter that would constantly lose signal.

  • Is this a useful buy if I have an S4 tablet?

    • It is if you want to do Dual display to a monitor as well as the tablet.

    Thanks OP.

I got a USB C hub from Amazon with HDMI out, USB C PD in and 3 USB ports.
It was purchased for my laptop but when I plug my S10 in, it all works perfectly with Dex.

This way, you can at least charge your phone while using Dex.

    • You can charge using a wireless qi charger still using this method. I personally find 3rd party DEX docks hit and miss at connecting or HDMI hand-shaking on the resolutions.

    • link to the hub?

    Thank OP, bought one.

  • Any other function other than Dex is a must for you people using Samsung?

I love Samsung flow and bixby brief alarm!

    • The Multi window function when I can't DEX and using just the phone with BT Keyboard/mouse. It's the next best thing to DEX in phone only mode.

  • anyone have any recommendations on foldable keyboards? The iClever ones seem pretty good but they're expensive locally…amazon.com has them for ~$50 USD but they won't ship to Aus.

I personally love my Microsoft Foldable keyboard:
      https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/keyboar…

The fold gap takes a bit to get use to but the keys are fantastic and the same as what is used in the MS Surface Keyboards.

But it looks like it has been discontinued in Australia and getting it overseas is pretty expensive + GST.

  • Now out of stock on store site and eBay it seems.
