nice deal, I have the monochrome screen version. This is a great remote, buy it.

  • Do you need the existing remote control to teach this thing to replace it or can you download software off the internet?

    • You HAVE to download software off the internets for these things, and no you don't need the original remote I(if its not some obscure device)

      • The software and/or myharmony website are great for some devices; but even though others are in the database the programming isn't quite right IME.

Sometimes you still have to get the harmony to learn from the old remote, and for some devices you have to use the harmony software to customise learning from the old remote in RAW mode, coz the native harmony IR learning can try to be a bit to smart for it's own good! :)

  • Awesome price. I have one and got it for $80 only 6 months ago.

  • I gave up on programming on of these to replace 4 remotes for my parents - it was a real pain and the programming was lacking many codes. In the end they found it easier to continue juggling multiple remotes like they are used to anyway - can't change old habits!

    • I kinda know where you're coming from. The software got 3/5 of mine right straight off the bat. Of the remaining 2, the A/C is set to auto temp so that just needs on/off ATM so that was a snap to learn.

I've learned, however, that any device that needs multiple features & isn't in the database; or they didn't get it right; can be a bit of a pain. It's not that it's a difficult process to program RAW, just tedious & a bit time consuming! Don't attempt it with your HTPC, do it with a desktop/laptop…I learned that one the hard way! ;)

That said, I have one of these & now the tricky bit's over I'm really happy with it! :)

  • I have the Harmony 650 and love it. Software is a bit clunky but quite customisable once you get the hang of it.

Only issue is that there is a bit of a lag when inputting consecutive commands. For example when I use the Harmony to scroll through a menu on my HTPC, I finish pressing the buttons but it still scrolls, whereas the original remote (which the Harmony replaced) was super responsive.

Also there seems to be a loose connection or screw because I can here it ticking around inside. But I don't want to get it repaired under warranty as I cannot live without the remote for the 2 or so weeks it would take to fix! Other than that the build quality is very good; it doesn't feel too light, is nicely shaped and well constructed.

Exactly what I found! The lag/delay issue you're experiencing is also customisable too, this link should help:

    • And the ticking sound is a a motion sensor so that it can light up and display the screen when you grab it. I thought it had a big sticker on it or something saying this, otherwise they would get a lot of returns lol.

I bought the Harmony 600 (monochrome version) and PS3 adapter from Logitechshop, when they had both bundled together for $60. It was a great buy. It was more customisable than I thought it would be. There's no user defined macro feature, and I didn't really expect one for the price, but the "activity" feature serves decently as a replacement for macros. You can customise the screen and almost every single button, dependent on what activity or device you've selected on the remote. So I created an activity called "PS3 Time", which turns on the amplifier, TV, sets the amp to optical input, TV to HDMI input, and adjusts the buttons so that I can scroll through the PS3 menu with the direction arrows, and the OK button sends an X PS3 button signal. Because it also has the red/green/blue/yellow buttons, its perfect as a blu-ray remote for the PS3.

The software for configuring the remote could be made a little easier to navigate, but I'm a tech sort of guy, so it doesn't worry me. I've learned how to work it fine. I would have preferred a non-web based config process, but it does the job, I suppose. Once you've figured out what you want, you don't have to use the software again, anyway. When you're first using the remote, though, expect a few trips back to the computer to tweak buttons and screen options for whatever activity you're working with.

This is my first universal remote, and I have to say, I'm quite happy with it.

    • i have the 650 and find it wont switch off the ps3. if i hit the all off button, it pops up with the turn off controller and turn off system menu (same as if u hold ps button) but it just scrolls up and down and doesnt actually turn it off. Not sure what is going on. Also i find the remote gets really confused switching things off and on. say i go watch movie activity and bluray turns on etc, then go to watch tv, bluray will sometimes stay on and if i hit all off, it will keep bluray on.

not sure what is happening. all my stuff is sony or panasonic aswell, not to do with obscure brands.

Most likely some of the devices need a pause between receiving signals (even one's they don't use which are meant for other devices). There is a wizard on the software config app which walks you through this and asks you which device isn't operating correctly.

Having said that, my Foxtel Box is very hit and miss in turnng on/off and I've never really managed to get it working 100% of the time. Everything else is pretty much spot on.

        • I actually use one of the custom / lcd-screen buttons to power off all of my devices. That way if the signal from the remote is blocked to one of the devices I just hit the custom button again until it turns off. If you use the dedicated power-off button on the harmony it exits the activity and you only get one chance to press it!

  • How is the macro programming for this? Ma and Pa are finding it hard to change HDMI, turn on TV/VIDEO sound input on Entertainment System, Turn on WDTV Live… Does it allow pauses in between commands? i.e. WAIT 3, DO A, WAIT 2, DO B?

    • That is exactly what it does. You press one button and it will turn on the devices and set the correct input on the devices all at once.

For example I press my custom "Play XBOX" button it will turn on my TV, set the TV to AV4, turn on my receiver, set it to DVR3, and turn on the XBOX all in one go. You need to point and hold the remote steady for about 5 secs for the commands to finish.
