Car Making Very Loud Noise & Fail to Start, Thoughts?

Hi,

I tried to start my car earlier and the weirdest thins is happening! am stomped and would love your thoughts.

So, it has a push button start and every time i press the button I could hear a very loud screeching noise followed by nothing with a total failure to start the engine.
Everything seems normal on the dashboard, no warnings/faults what so ever & battery seems to be perfectly fine.

My thoughts so far:
Starter motor?
or Starter motor belt.

Any thoughts would be highly appreciated before i give up and call a mobile mechanic.
(Don't have RACV to get it towed)

Whilst on this thought:
- Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced mobile mechanic in Melbourne?

In advance, thank you for your help

Just join RACV and wait 24 hours the tow it or call them to run a diagnosis for you?

    • Cool video!
      The engine isn't cranking though.
It's just a screeching sound and that's it.
      Thanks for the thought though

  • Starter doesnt have a belt.

At least i've never seen a starter motor with a belt.

Ive replaced a couple in older cars

    They are "plumbed in"

    • So you reckon it's most likely the starter? or perhaps something else?
      Thanks mate

    • Lol!
I know right! I didn't end up finding a deal so didn't end up signing up.

The regret of not finding a deal and not owning a DeLorean to be able to time travel back to secure a deal.

Sounds like a spun muffler bearing.

Wow I was going to pin the glove box being the problem then I remembered Mafia cars have this common problem in their boot

      • Flux capacitor?

What car? thats like the first thing you should share.

Op, u should get your car checked asap. this is a safety issue.

    • I'd say op is pretty safe sitting in his car in the driveway.

    Fuel pump

When a starter fails you don't usually get a loud screeching noise, it's usually just a click and nothing. If you're certain the engine isn't turning over (therefore no belts moving which eliminates alternator, AC, possibly water pump) then the only thing I can think of that could make noise is the starter has come loose and the screech is the pinion gear not meshing with the flywheel correctly. What you could be hearing is the pinion grinding on whatever it's contacting when activated. Would be easier to say if I could hear it.

Does the noise continue for as long as you hold the button or does it stop itself (having no experience with starter buttons I assume it'll continue to crank as long as the button is held).

    • It is possible if the starter gear is stripped it might sound like a screeching sound. The sound I’ve heard when the starter doesn’t engage properly or the engine is already running. I’d probably describe it more like grinding, but we all hear differently and have different backgrounds to describe things differently.

  • it's a ford?

  • Lift up the bonnet & see what is out of place

  • Most likely the starter motor failing to engage the ring gear.

Would help if you took a recording of the "very loud screeching noise followed by nothing" but my recommendation is to get it towed to your local dealership workshop if the car is under 5 years old, older than 5 years get it towed to your local workshop.

The reason I recommend a dealership over a workshop is that the mechanics have more training on what they sell, less diagnostic time spent is money you save.
I have seen workshops spend and charge a few hours to find an issue that was a notice to all dealership workshops of an easy quick fix.

Whatever it is, you are better calling the mobile mechanic. From experience, loud screeching noises followed by engines not starting are usually related to major failures and not something where a quick fix will work.

First of all, you need to know if the engine is even turning over. Open the bonut and watch the engine. Does the engine turn over when someone pushes the start button? If not, big issue. If it does, listen for the noise and where is it coming from?

Only thing I could think of to try, is, if it is a manual car, put it in a high gear (4th or 5th), take the park brake off and push the car to turn the engine over a little. The noise may be a damaged part of the flywheel and the starter isn’t engaging, so you just need to try a new section of the flywheel. Without hearing the noise, it’s hard to diagnose. This is not a fix, but may be enough to get it started to get it to a mechanic. If it makes the same noise after turning the engine, it’s likely a starter motor.

If it’s an auto, this trick wont work. I don’t feel there is any quick fix for this and you will need someone to come and look at it.

Is you car set to Park on the transmission?

  • If its a Ford late series the ring gear may be full of gunk the solenoids gum up (at least when mine did that what the auto electrician said. The screech is the gears not meshing, sit in car open door using foot rock car back and forth a few times (assuming its auto) whilst in park the rocking motion moves the ring gear slightly aligning the teeth the car should start

    Definitely the wipers.

  • Broken energy polarizer?

  • You should not have asked for help without providing the vehicle make and model.

They've been a member since 2016 so we should assume Camry or Corolla until they tell us otherwise.

    • It's a Tesla. Does that help? Hee hee.

  • When my alternator failed in a previous car, it made an awful screeching sound. Check your battery while it’s running see if alternator is working, can get a battery tester or multimeter to test

    • My alternator did the same when the bearings went, but it only occurred when the engine was running.
