wish you could have some of each in a case

Just ask a staff member. I've had it done no probs before.

  • Any recommendations?

The Pale Ale is my absolute favourite beer. The Fancy Pants is great too if you like an amber ale.

      • I can’t stomach the Fancy Pants, not sure if it’s just the taste, or also drinking beer from a can that is so off putting. Yep, bottle snob here.

Hightail and Pale are my go to’s, as is their IPA when in season.

        • +3

Can't drink from a can. Gotta pour it into a glass. Don't know why, just makes a big difference.

          • @FTTNope: Pour the can contents into an empty bottle. Problem solved.

        • +12

          Get a glass, problem solved.

Cans are the future and I'll hear no other argument.

        • +3

          Beer snob here.
Do you pour the beer from the bottle into a glass?
If not you are wasting your money, just buy shit beer.

          • +1

@BondiLion: Same here. I always do. Also why can plus glass is the ideal combination (no light strike, less oxidation).

            • @dazweeja: Less oxidation in storage, though most canning lines would have higher O2 ppm than bottling lines (harder to purge cans than bottles), so end result is probably dependant on how long between sealing and drinking

          • +1

            @BondiLion: Yep, agree with this.

Started doing it a while back after a discussion with an owner of a micro brewery and haven't looked back.

Also feel less bloated after a couple as pouring the beer into a glass breaks out some of the CO2.

          • @BondiLion:

Do you pour the beer from the bottle into a glass?

Yes and no. At home, yes, chilled pint glass. Maybe that’s a good part of the issue, never had a Fancy Pants from the glass. Will have to try.

            • @snuke: You haven't lived until you've had a fancy pants Fancy Pants.

              • @freefall101: I visited the mountain goat brewery down in melbourne and happened to be there when they were doing fancy pants on tap but using nitro. Smooth and velvety, it's making me thirsty just thinking about it! I think they stopped doing nitro now, though not sure why..

Bottle snob needs to pour their bottle into a glass..

          Yep, glass snob here ;)

        • +1

Fancy Pants I used to smash like there's no tomorrow. Now I avoid it, I've had so many bad cartons of it from Dans that I just don't bother anymore. When it's not been looked after, it tastes terrible… real malty and bitter.

          • @OneMoreTune: Maybe thats why i haven't enjoyed the last few fancy pants. Used to love them thought I was just getting over the taste, sad days:)

    Mountain Goat Steam Ale

    • Yes

  • +1

Fancy Pants Amber Ale is nice

  • +2

Better than VB or Tooheys for the same price I guess.

Not overly keen on their stuff but it is a good price.

  • +1

Great deal for some of the best beer (Mountain Goat Steam Ale) around.

  • +4

Did not fit my iphone. Would not recommend.

    • That took me a minute… :)

  • +3

Yeah, this is pretty solid. It's base level craft (and not really because they're not independent anymore) but $50 is a fair price. I'd go Steam Ale or Fancy Pants.

    • +3

'Base level craft' is my favourite style of beer! Any fancier and I find there's too many hops, and my wallet isn't happy either.

    Price before login is

    $50 WA, TAS, VIC
    $53 NSW, ACT, SA, QLD

No idea why these states are always more expensive?

    • probably priced in the container refund scheme

      • Correct.

Another misunderstood fact is 20 cents is charged per bottle in NSW to the purchaser of the bottle. 10 cents of which is given to the returner and the other 10c is administration cost of the scheme.

So Dan Murphy is covering $1.80 of that bottle surcharge for NSW customers.

        • Now we are screwed that China is no longer buying the plastic, so all the hardwork behind this going to waste!

        • The container deposit cost (including admin charges) is running roughly between 11 - 14c in the NSW scheme - I'd assume other states would be around the same. Any more than that and you're just being overcharged. Based on 11 - 14c per bottle / can, at $3 price difference for a 24pk, Dan Murphys is covering between -$0.36 and +$0.36 of the scheme ie. in the long run, nothing.

    • because in SA at least you get 10c for recycling each can/stubbie.

24*10c is $2.40 ($3) add that to the vic price

    • +1

Price after login is still $53 in QLD

The Fancy Pants, High Tail & Pale are all reasonably good beers if you are a craft beer drinker (and very good value at this price).

The Steam and Summer are very bland and boring but would suit those who dont like their beer on the more flavorsome side of things.

    • +1

Agree on the Steam Ale, extremely bland.

    • +1

I was amazed at how good the summer ale was on tap and how bad it was in a can.

    • +1 for steam ale being bland, had it on tap and it tasted pretty much like carbonated water. May appeal to some but not for me.

      • Their steam ale is terrible.
Anchor make the reference example of a steam beer and mountain goat are an insult to that ;)

Putting this here just in case anyone isn't aware, but Dan Murphys accept Woolworths Wish cards.

So, pay for a $50 case using a gift card that cost you $47.50 via Cashrewards. Less Cashrewards 1% and a case comes down to $47 in Victoria.

Or $11.75 for a six pack.

Everytime I want to buy something on special (elsewhere) I just get it at Dan Murphy's for cheaper AND use the 5% off wish cards…

    • Did the same, but used Suncorp benefits to get the Dan Murphy's gift card ($47.50 for $50) then used Shopback for ~4.5% back. So get it for $45.25 pick up.
Edit: only gave me $0.50 for cash back, not $2.25 as suspected.

      • cashback is only 1% for beers

      • How quick do Suncorp gift cards come through? I've never tried to use them but think I have access via insurance.

  • I have tried them all and a Fancy Pants was the best. I wouldn't call Mountain Goat a "craft beer" though. It's pretty average. A few years ago DM had a member special $10 for a six-pack, so $53 is a fair price.

    • yes I bought my limit every day for a week. But this container refund lurk?? why not $52.40 they charge an extra $3. because and have to pay #2.40 for the container refund scheme?????

  • +1

I wish Fancy Pants from Dans always tasted great, like it should. Buuuuut it rarely does. I've taken back a fair few tinnies because it tasted like it was either off or been stored too warm. It's shame because it's a nice drop when right.

  • +3

It's all brewed by Asahi now. These are not the same quality beers as MG used to brew years ago. Avoid.

  • +1

one of my favs. I like the Steam Ale. it still tastes like it did when it first came out. got it for $50 in store in Melb.

  • -1

MG are so mainstream! I really don't like beer but have found that the small cans of sour that taste like passiona and have edgy graphics are my favorite.

  • -2

What’s this like compared to Monteith’s Black Beer or Kilkenny?

    • +1

Not a single one of these is a dark beer…so, completely unlike either of those ;)
