Google Chromecast 2 $30 @ Australia Post (Selected Stores)

3500

Spotted this at Australia Post. Seems like a good deal for a Chromecast. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think it’s gen 2?

Mod: From comments it appears selected stores and likely to be limited stock.

    Yes, it’s the 2
3 has a smaller central logo and rounded edges,

    • The biggest addition to v3 seems to be 60fps FHD.

      • 60fps FHD

        what content ?

        • +7

          Kayo is FHD 50fps.

        • some twitch streams…

          • @duckdodgers245: Paymoneywubby in 4k…

            • @rodericb: Not sure if I want to watch him in 4K tbh

Not the best looking dude out there but funny as hell

        • +2

          what content ?

Gen3 can play 1080p@60fps YouTube content. Gen2 can only do 720p@60 or 1080p@30.

      • +2

I've watched 50fps content (like Kayo Sports) on my Chromecast 2, and it shows 50fps no problems.

        • +1

720p content is done at 60fps.

All according to wiki, so it could be wrong. I don't have either of these. Was just curious what the diff was, so figured it was worth a post.

        • +2

I agree. It looks fine, even on my SAmsung 4K. If anything, I am keen for a bargain on the CC Ultra 4K. $87 I think is the cheapest it has been.

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: I reckon it was $50 at harvey norman or something a while ago

            • +2

@blewey: You're probably remembering when JB Hifi accidentally priced the CC Ultra at $55 (about 18 months ago).

        • +2

It detects Chromecast 2 and streams 720p@60fps. Kayo will only stream 1080p@60fps for the Chromecast 3 and Ultra. The good news is you haven't been able to tell the difference so who cares :)

          • @Tardvark: TIL. 720p still looks really sharp on my 1080p TV, they must use a high bitrate.

    • Does it have a Microphone…?

      • No microphone, controlled by phone or tablet.

  • Nationwide or store specific?

    • ^ answers answers

    • +1

No discount at the store i checked. $59

      • +2

Same here. I noticed they had product code 40087 on the one in-store, whereas the one in the pic is 83000. YMMV

      • Because that's the gen 3, different product code.

    • Nationwide, product code 83000

  • +2

No stock in both Parramatta stores.

  • +10

How convenient. I’m standing in line at Australia post right mow

    • +1

Does the price apply to the post office you're at right now?

    • +17

      right meow?

  • +10

Haha, sold mine on gumtree today for $35!

    • +4

Lol, you must've been laughing, who in their right mind would pay that, maybe they didn't know it was a Chomecast 2???

      • +1

Plenty of fools around. Seen them sell for up to $45. Xiogmao sold himself short

  • Only gen 3 availble from website, so might be clearance stock

  • Is this the 4k version or not?

    • You need chromecast ultra for 4k

      • +1

Ah, okay. I don't own one so not familiar with all the versions. Thanks.

      • +1

what if you have netflic inbuilt to your tv or tv box?

        • You can press the "i" or info button on your remote to see if goes passes 1080 after few sec.

          I think 2000 something is 4k

          • +1

            @JK5N: 1440p 2k
            2160p 4k

            • +3

@JK5N: jokes on me i dont even have that tier membership lol

        • +2

Is netflic like the wifi and gigabytes?

    • No.

    • -1

      It downscales 4k to FHD

  • +6

If it's Gen2 will I have to compile from source?

  • +2

Damn, I'm looking for a good price on a Chromecast Audio but can't seem to find one!

    • +7

Don't wait too long. They have stopped production. So once they're sold out, that's it.

    • +1

I waited, also. Don't know why, as reviews highlighted the standard price is insane, for the hardware inside.

    • That's not going to happen it's been discontinued and prices have skyrocketed to compensate for the fact that there is no viable replacement from Google.

      • -1

why do you need a google branded one? just get a 5 bucker from ebay does the same thing… enables streaming!

        • You don't but in my experience, those five dollar cheapies have all sorts of problems. I'd be curious to see a link?

            • @9hundred: Yeah that doesn't come anywhere close to what a Chromecast Audio does.

              • -2

                @tonyduffe: what's so special about a chromecast audio then…?

                • @9hundred: For a start, it doesn't use bluetooth, it uses Wifi.

                  • -3

@PotPlant: Who down votes every post i make? Next time find a better option yourself!!!

                    • @9hundred: I downvoted your comments because they're not relevant to the discussion at hand. And why do you care what we want to use? Which is clearly not a five dollar subpar Bluetooth module. And also maybe you're the one that's petty because I've noticed every reply in this bargain of mine has been downvoted not the ones just part of this thread discussion like I did.

            • @9hundred: Check the link.

            • +1

@9hundred: Check the link. This is NOT Chromecast

        • +4

The Chromecast Clones are not $5. Rather about $15 but more like $20 for the better ones like the Anycast M9 Plus which is Chromecast compatible. The others aren't so cant stream NetFlix or YouTube etc

You also dont get that reliable power source you get with Chromecast so there is also a hidden cost involved.

By the time you pay for a good clone and get a good power source you are up for about $30. Its not worth it when you can buy a used Chromecast 2 for $20-$25 or better still a new one for $30 right now.
I know because i have one of the best clones - the Chromecast compatible Anycast M9 Plus. I also have the Chromecast 2.

And NO they are not the same. Nowhere near it.

The Chromecast clones just mirror your phone so reliant on whatever internet you have on your phone whether mobile or wifi and also reliant on your phones processing power. You also need to have your phone plugged into a charger as the drain on battery running internet, wifi, multimedia and screen mirroring is huge.
The clone's processor is much slower and the memory buffer is much smaller so you get the occassional slow downs, stops and starts, freezes and glitches too.

The best thing about the clones is the fact there is no setup required. Just turn on screen mirroring on your phone and connect it to the dongle via wifi. Thats it. No need to install Google Home or any Chromecast compatible apps. Everything you see on your phone mirrors onto the TV. Actually this makes them great to take with you on holidays!

          • @HeWhoKnows: Nice, thanks for the info.

          • @HeWhoKnows: This was almost a good answer - you've given a great rundown of the Chromecast, but not of the Chromecast Audio which this whole damn train-wreck of a downvote thread is about.

@9Hundred seems to have thought that the Chromecast Audio is a way of pushing audio via Bluetooth to a speaker. It's not, it's a dongle that connects to a 3.5mm audio jack and negotiates it's own connection to a streaming service. You can buy multiples and stream audio (as long as the app you're using allows it) to multiple speakers at once, so it's a multi-room system that costs not much. If you already have an incredible speaker set, you can plug a Chromecast in to make it smart.

Bluetooth receivers need the sending device to be in range. For Wifi speakers, they just need to be on the same network, and that's normally only to initiate the playback.

@Amazingone are there any Chromecast Audio clones? The Video ones are pretty bad - Miracast is the protocol, right? - but there's nothing that fits other than a Sonos, Google Home mini or an Alexa plugged in to a set of speakers, right?

      • +2

Is there anything good about it? You're giving me fomo man…

        • +1

Damn, you’re the one who took the username I really wanted.

      • What was the original price? I'm seeing it available from a fair few places for between $49 - $59.

    • Update coming for Chromecast 3 will include chromecast audio functionality which will be cool, but I guess only through HDMI.
      https://variety.com/2018/digital/news/google-chromecast-3rd-…

The next google home mini should have 3.5mm out which will give the same functionality of chromecast audio with google assistant ability which is good.

In saying that, I have 6x chromecast audios and love them (along with Google home mini and 2x google homes) for multiroom audio. Great piece of kit

      • +2

Yeah but unfortunately the 3.5mm analogue out cannot compete with the sound quality of optical out on the chromecast audio.

        • Is the optical out the only difference the cc audio has over Regular cc?

          • +3

@ChocolateTown: "Regular Chromecast can handle audio well, but the Chromecast Audio has an on board AKM AK4430 DAC that supports Hi-Res Audio up to 24-bit/96KHz so it’s much better for streaming hi-res music. Tidal users rejoice!" - source: https://www.cambridgeaudio.com/en/blog/what-chromecast

            • @aldroid: But if you're using the (digital) optical output, how does the DAC (digital to analog converter) come into play?

              • @ssquid: It doesn't. ChocolateTown asked if the optical out was the only difference between the CC Audio and the regular CC.

      • eARC support would make up for HDMI only, but there are not many HDMI 2.1 devices out there other than LG's 9 series OLED.

  • I have gen1, whenever I cast from my phone the youtube on my phone has to remain on. I used to be able to close the youtube and it will keep playing but after the youtube update it wont allow me to close the apps. If I close youtube, the cast on the tv will stop playing.

    • +3

If you have Youtube premium, you can close the app and it will still cast.

      • +1

Yes, I think because of that premium they change the way how it was.
But technically if you cast, it should keep playing as the chromecast pick up the internet though.

    • +1

That issue maybe limited to the gen 1. I have no issues closing the app with gen 2, 3 and ultra I may pull my gen 1 out for testing.

      • +1

        Thanks mate, let me know.

        • -1

          Checked also no issue.

      • i have a gen1 and i dont have this issue.

    • Maybe just uninstall the latest version of youTube and install an older version of YouTube. Can easily be done on an android phone if you know how.

  • +2

Definitely specific stores and would be limited stock.

  • +1

Does this do Kayo at 1080p or limited to 720p like my Gen1 Chromecast?

    • 1080p (50FPS?). I find on my Gen2 kayo can be absolute rubbish with audio delay though. Might just be my outdated router.

    • +1

My gen2 only does 720p on Kayo

      • +1

Same for me. Gen2 does 720p on kayo.
I have to say though, I have a 4k TV, not sure whether it's the upscaler that is doing all the work, but I find there is very little difference from free to air hd channels (1080). Much better than free to air SD channels.

        For reference it's a Pana 55 fx800a

        • I have a chromecast ultra and it's only displaying kayo in 720p.

  • +20

All those up-votes, has anyone else even found one?!

    • +1

Just what I was thinking earlier in the day after already 40 odd votes.

    • +7

If anyone wants I can upload the receipt for pricematch somewhere else?

    • Yep got the last one, ten minutes ago in Ivanhoe, VIC
