    OP this is not new.
Priority pass has always been avaliable for any black card holder that has selected the westpac Altitude rewards program rather than the Qantas Reward program regardless of whether they have the AMEX companion card.
I have been using it for the last 2 years.

    • Yes, this benefit has existed for many years: http://web.archive.org/web/20150202003352/https://www.westpa…
At least when Westpac did the Platinum -> Black conversion back in 2013.

It's new for me, and I have held a Black card for many years.

Also hasn't appeared on OzB previously.

      • Did you also know that Qantas Frequent Flyer membership allows some suckers to pay 99 dollars to join? Or is that new too?

      • It has been in OzB, just that it's been bundled in the same post as the Westpac Credit card deals.

      • I’m a black card holder and appreciate the heads up.

    • +5

Next up, 50 percent off licence renewal for good drivers!

      • I think you mean bad drivers pay 50% more on renewal.

      • -1

So unjust how that is even legal and unquestioned

      • Why don't you make that your 1st post. I assume, like the OP, it applies Australia wide, as well as internationally.

  • +3

Thanks OP. I signed up last year and when the Amex card was stopped they cancelled my priority pass. Really embarrassing moment in dubai. Just signed up again with your link. Thanks!!

    • +1

You should have got an email about the expiry and for you to sign up for one with your MasterCard around March last year

      • Yep, they made it quite clear you needed to sign up again, and that the PP would expire when the card ended. That meant two more visits for me.:D

  • +5

Just a unrelated question. Anyone know of any Westpac coupons for City2Surf this year?

  • So sign up using westpac MasterCard and get free lounge pass and when I cancel card in 6 months, the lounge passes will still be valid?? I presume they use this card to charge for next year.??

    • +2

Cardholders get free annual PP membership (saving $99/year), and 2 complimentary lounge entries.

The card is used to charge for any additional (non-complimentary) lounge entries.

No idea what happens if you cancel the card.

      • +4

I got a number of attempts where I cannot access the lounge as the priority pass got rejected due to bank issue
So very sure that it always check the validity with the bank for each entry

Besides, while there are 2 lounge complimentary accesses per year
only primary card holder can use it
so I cannot bring my family member with me (or I will need to pay for his entry which directly deducted from my CC)

If you really travel a lot and like entering airport lounge
strongly recommend to apply for the Diner's Club Qantas Card
Its $95+55 per year but have unlimited lounge entries
Besides, any additional card holder is $50 and also comes with unlimited lounge access

        http://www.dinersclub.com.au/individuals.htm

        • It's also 2 x $36 credits to be used at Melbourne or Sydney airport.

        • Have you tried the additional card holder access to lounges? I can't find it written anywhere, but sounds awesome.

    • Is it valid for only a year or every year?

      • +2

It's valid for as long as you hold your westpac card. u get 2 lounge accesses per 12 months

    • +3

Once u cancel the card, pp gets cancelled too

Same if you lose your card, they cancel your pp and you need to re register when you receive the new card (which also means your 2 lounges per year gets refreshed)

      • Thanks. Wont sign up then.
(Incidentally, could you get 4 pass's by re registering)

        • +3

No, they're not physical access cards. You get a membership card (or use the app) and when you access the lounge they have a record of your access. So you could only use it twice per 12 months for free (after that there's a charge)

    • +1

I don’t think so. I wasn’t able to access my PP when I cancelled my Citibank Signature card mid year. PP seems to know if your linked credit card is active or not.

      • +1

I've had the opposite experience. All my PP cards have worked after I've cancelled the linked credit card. I'm wondering whether I could have invited a guest for $27 and that fee getting lost in transit. (so Mrs muncan didn't have to wait outside the lounge every time)

        • Same here. Also used the pp for access after i had used the 2 free passes. The attached westpac card was cancelled so they couldn't charge me. Got a letter asking for payment which i just ignored.

          • @Jdog88: Cancelled my westpac altitude but was able to sign up to PP. Cancelled my westpac two months ago…

  • I don't hold this card but if you go to the main website it's show it's free to join. Is anyone else getting that option?

    • Do you mind sharing the link you used please?

      • Click on the pic thumbnail. Click on submit button. Click on Find lounges and more. I then typed in and selected Melbourne. Click on Priority Pass. Click on Join now. Select Australia as your residence.

        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/39370/68802/a5b1984b-4…

Haven't signed up yet so do not know if it's still free after the sign up process.

        • You need to enter your CC number as part of the joining process. That would show whether or not you have the required card.

          • @jackspratt: True, if you follow the OP's link and do it officially, when you get to the payment it asks for a mastercard and the card starts with 51631030 (i assume that's the prefix of a qualifying Westpac black card)

            https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/39370/68805/cd35e1c0-a…

When you do it the way I did, when you get to the payment it still asks for a mastercard, but does not have the prefix 51631030 filled in, so it may let you use any mastercard. But as I mentioned above, I have not filled in my card details to verify the outcome.

            https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/39370/68807/9ccb25b7-b…

            • @unity1: Have just tried to enter a non Westpac credit card and was advised to 'please enter a valid credit card number' so I assume that they still verify that your card number matches the conditions

              • @Pixel: Thanks for confirming. Sounded too good to be true.

  • Interesting, is this different to the 2 Qantas lounge passes?? I'm westpac black altitude card holder.

    • Yes, if you earn Qantas points you can claim Qantas passes, if you earn altitude points you can claim priority pass passes.

Depends on what points you earn on your black card as to the pass available to you

      • ahh dammit, thought this bargain you can claim both :(

        • You can. He's referring to the impied policy, not the actual reality.

  • +2

I get Qantas points however I was able to join this for free. Just in time for my trip in June.

    • You can join, but I suspect they will validate with Westpac and won't send your card out (or if they do, it will be terminated soon after). That's the way affiliate bonuses like this are done with PP.

      • IME they don't. In any case, Westpac allow you to switch freely between the two programs, so just get Qantas passes and points, switch to rewards, and get PP.

    • Can you log in and check if you have 2x entries into the lounge. I have PP with Citi Sig card and it say 2 entries as soon as I log in.

My partner tried using a St George Qantas card and it generated a PP membership, but no sign of 2x passes. It just says "contact bank". I suspect Westpac will be the same.
Hope I'm wrong, as I would like to get her into a lounge in NYC or LA where the Qantas passes are useless.

  • Do the 2 passes reset at end of each year or card year? My wife holds this card so trying to avoid having her call up!

    • Card year (ie per 12 months, not calendar Yr) U can download the app and use that. It'll show your history

      • So if I use both today 30/April/2019, the next free 2 starts next year from 1/May/2020?

        • +1

It depends on your card period
So for eg, if you register your card and it starts today , you have 12 months to use it from today.

The beginning of the period starts when your card has been registered (or received/activated? I can't remember) not the first day you use the lounge

Sorry if my original comment wasn't clear

          • @SmiTTy: Made sense thanks. It reset at the start of April so another 2 passes plus my brand new account :P

  • Thanks OP - I thought this was only available for those who didn't have the Qantas Lounge passes, but it seems like you can have both?

    • Anyone able to confirm this? I chose the Qantas program for the Altitude card, if I sign up to this would it void the Qantas program + plus the passes I get with it?

      • Can confirm they don't check if you do both.

      • Can confirm got both successfully last year after signing up for the card. Registered and received the Qantas lounge passes first, then Priority pass (still active).

        • But membership doesn't mean 2 x free entries. My panter tried this with st George. Just gave her a membership, but no free entry. Can you confirm 2 x entries?

          • @tunzafun001: Yes it says 2 visits remaining in the app, I just checked.

  • Can you buy a pass for a guest travelling alone?

    • No, it needs to be accompanied with the priority pass member
However, even for paying the US$27 I would say doesn't worth the money (at least in the lounge in Melbourne airport)

There are some lounges which are worth for paying tho, such as the Plaza Premium lounge in the Hong Kong International Airport

      • Which one is better? There's like 3 if I recall.

        • The closest, there are Kilometers of gates

        • For plaza premium in HK airport, the one near gate 1 is the best I reckon. If you already got the priority pass membership, there’s another plaza premium luxury next by which you need to pay $200HKD extra. The luxury comes with free massages and 5 star 3courses dinning in addition. A free travel mug is also given as freebie.

  • Love how I have been an altitude black member for many years but mine is a visa.. sweet.

  • +2

For anyone using priority pass in Melbourne or around the world entering Plaza Premium lounge, don’t forget to join the Arrture club for free. You earn extra points in each plaza premium entries which can redeem offers like upgrades to first class lounge entries.

    https://www.arrture.com/home

    • Also, exit the toilet on the other side to get into the Amex lounge. Same thing, but I had 2 beers and a scotch and they said no more drinks for an hr. So just went the other side. In no way drunk or rude. Wasn't bitter, just rolled with it.

  • Seems Sydney doesn't have an actual lounge, apart from the REX lounge (for regional flights). How backwards is that?

    • You can get meals/purchases from different outlets (eg Movida) in exchange for 1 "lounge pass" but yeah, doesn't really substitute for a lounge

    • +4

There are food outlets where you can claim something like $36 worth of food. Well worth it in my opinion - my partner and I had a good meal whilst only using one lounge pass

      https://www.ausbt.com.au/priority-pass-now-offers-36-of-food…

  • +3

I had this for years and think that it's basically useless. I travel a lot at rarely got to use it.

I even had the app and also 'Lounge Buddy' to find the lounges (and their ratings).

The lounges it gives access to are pretty low standard, but more importantly, the passes can only be used by the card holder.

Travel somewhere with your girlfriend/partner and it's free for you and $27 USD ($38 AUD) for them just to access a dodgy buffet, sometimes the lounges are basically simply roped off areas and in some airports not much better than the free seating around the place. You do however get wifi, a quiet place to sit and newspapers which is nice though.

There are some good lounges in there somewhere (I went to one nice one in Norway), but I rarely found them.

    • -1

It's patchy, but to say it's useless is extremely subjective (and for anybody doing intercontinental travel, wrong). Lounges in Singapore are pretty good, lounges in Latin America can be very good, even lounges in Europe aren't bad.

      • +2

Sure. I can say it was practically useless for me then. And I think it'll be for many people, but yes it's subjective and YMMV. If you travel alone it would be better. Travelling with a partner I'd rather spend the $38 on food in the food court of an Airport.

Having been to the QANTAS and Virgin lounges once or twice before, I first thought this card would be unreal!

Then, once you get it and realise all the resctrictions, how few lounges you can use it in (2 within Australia from memory, and none in Melbourne) and how the quality of the lounge is nothing like QANTAS or Virgin.

        • -1

Fair points you make, PP has been pretty bad in Aus to this point. But it's making a lot of headway. Melbourne now has a brand new, and pretty decent, Plaza lounge, as does Brisbane. Sydney has a load of places offering free food for your 2 visits. Those coming back from Bali won't be getting the best lounge visit ever, but it's still free drinks, free hot meals and basic shower facilities. Even KLIA2 has a decent PP lounge, meaning you'll get a shower and a comfy seat in a LCCT. In Sao Paulo and Rio you have top of the range lounges at your disposal.

They do need one from Perth, desperately, however.

  • I have a complimentary Priority Pass membership with Citibank Signature card. if I have or get this one - will I get another Priority pass with additional 2 lounge passes?

    • Correct. 4 entries instead of 2. :)

      • Will that be 2 cards with 2 passes on each? or 1 card and 4 passes?

    • If you have a travelling companion better to get it in their name so that you can both get in free.

      • But dont they check names etc of the credit card before issuing the card?

        • +1

They didn't check my Credit Card when I used the Citibank ones in Singapore. Priority Pass card itself was enough. The only time I've had them check my credit card was for American Express lounge in Sydney Airport with the Altitude Black.

  • To hold a Westpac Altitude Black Mastercard you have to pay AU$250 per year, so the Priority pass membership is implicitly not free.

If you don't hold a credit card, the cost of membership is even cheaper than through the card benefits - US$99 (AU$144) + US$32(AU$47)/visit

    • +1

or you get the altitude black free with a range of mortgages so it costs you nothing :)

      • Nothing but the mortgage interest 😉
