Digitech 4K (1.5ghz Rockchip Quad Core, 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM) Android 7.1 Nougat Media Player - $49.95 @ Jaycar

82

I'm unsure if this is a decent Android box or not, but for $49.95 it might be alright. The Jaycar site gives the following information:

This advanced Android media player allows you to browse the web, run Android Games and Apps, or watch your favourite movies in 4K or 1080p resolution on your HDTV. It connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or wired network, and to your TV using HDMI. A digital audio output allows you to connect to an amplifier or active speakers. The Android 7.1 Nougat operating system allows you to customise the player with your own choice of Android Apps, from Netflix to playing YouTube clips. When you are not streaming content from the Internet or the internal 8GB of storage, you can watch media from your USB Hard drive, flash drive or SD memory card. All the standard audio, photo and video formats are supported. Includes infrared remote control, HDMI cable and mains power adaptor.

EDIT: For those whinging that I'm not following the posting rules, here's the rule in question:

Summarise briefly why it is a bargain - why did you buy it or consider it worth sharing? How does the price compare to elsewhere? Can you comment from personal experience on the quality of the product?

Since you want an answer, other currently available media players are more expensive than this one, which is also available through an Australian retailer if you're not keen on buying cheap electronics on eBay. I have not tried it, so cannot comment on its quality compared to name brand media centres or similarly spec'd devices.

There you go, issue resolved. If you think otherwise, I refer you to this rule:

REPORT any problems to a MODERATOR.

And this one:

BE respectful to others.

It looks like their normal price.

Why is it a bargain ?

      • +7

That's not how a deal works.

        Cheaper version here
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MXQ-PRO-Quad-Core-Android-7-1-Sm…

Sure it's not the exact model, but it does the same thing.

        • -3

Well if it's not the same model then you're not really comparing apple with apples are you?

I mean, the box I've posted is cheaper than an Nvidia Shield. Sure, it's not the exact model, but it does the same thing, right?

          • +4

@punkindrublic: You've still failed to mention why this a bargain and not SPAM.

          • +1

@punkindrublic: But why would you buy the Jaycar model when you could get the eBay one for cheaper. Only reason would be the bricks and mortar store, which is definitely a plus.

It's just not a great deal if you're happy to buy off eBay

If it were the mibox at this price, then stellar deal despite it not having ethernet. Why? Officially supported Android TV (not a skinned android version) on Android 8 Oreo. With official support for Netflix 4k.

OP doesn't have a clue… They clearly stated above : "I have not tried it, so cannot comment on its quality compared to name brand media centres or similarly spec'd devices."

but perhaps the price is low for what you're getting?

        Read the posting rules.

        This is not OzPerhapsABargain

    • So we are starting “what’s a bargain” again? How about you just move on and let us all work out if we are interested. Personally I’m now looking at this.

So we are starting “what’s a bargain” again?

If the deal poster can't justify why they posted it as a bargain, then it shouldn't be posted. Read the posting rules.

Otherwise we can just post anything randomly and "let us all work out if we are interested."

Can you please provide a link to the aforementioned rules?

I'm aware only of the guidelines, with which I think this posting complies.

@jv: The word rule does not appear within the text presented by the link you provided, in fact it appears to be the very same guidelines document which I also included in my prior query.

Something being less than RRP shouldn’t be the decider. A lot of places inflate the RRP so it looks like a bargain. The absolute joke is the time you waste replying to all these posts is just so much higher than if you just ignored them and moved on. Personally I just glance through the headlines, work on if I’m interested and then investigate if I am. I then do some Googling to do the comparison. I also look through the comments to see if someone has found a better deal. A win all round for me. I, assume, you have no interest in buying one of these.

As far as I can see, this is RRP at Jaycar. Is it discounted ??

    Jaycar? Never.

Additionally, they simply up-sell items you can buy easily on ebay/elsewhere online.

Thanks for that, i missed it the first time around. I was looking into getting the guys at work to buy these boxes (none of them online shop) for Kayo. I wont be going into Jaycar again.

Wouldn't: Resolution Frequency 30Hz be a deal breaker for most anyway?

    • +1

Who's watching movies in more than 30 fps?

      • It just indicates this is a low end chip. May have slow down, drop frames at higher video bitrate with 4k content.
The UI will also look to run choppy when not playing video because of the 30fps limit at 4k.

      • +1

        YouTube @ 60fps

Seems expensive for a Rockchip. If it was Amlogic then this would definitely be a bonus.
If people want to use this as a Kodi Box (CoreElec/LibreElec) then highly likely that's out of the question as they generally don't support Rockchips.

    • We are looking for something for Netflix, Stan etc. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks

      • +2

Get a vodafone tv for $72.

        • not sure if netflix will work with this box or not, as it requires special certificates which costs more to obtain so most android boxes won't work or won't allow displaying of Netflix 4K.

          • @lplau: Vodafone tv works

            • @scottySK: Good to know. Vodafone TV would work as a cheap certified Netflix.

        • Thanks for info.

  • agreed with iplau - don't go Rockchip - Amlogic based android media players are much better and have wider support for installing Kodi or Retroarch etc. turn these little boxes into media players or arcade / console games players like the dedicated Playstation Classic, NES classic etc.

  • +1

Rather get a vodafone tv for $72 than this android tv box. You get far better features.

  • Nope, you want 2GB of RAM.

  • Poor specs and running software not designed for TV use.
