What to Do in Hong Kong Airport for 3 Hours

I'm travelling in a few weeks time at overseas. I'll stop in Hong Kong terminal 1 for a 3 hours, between 9.30pm and leaving about 1am local time. What i can do for a limited time inside the airport? ( other than sleep). Thanks

Shop, eat, walk, sit and repeat.

Nothing really, at this hour I think most of the shops are closed and the airport is isolated on an island so not enough time to go out to get some food and back in

Anything like Singapore Geylang? Then 3 hours is enough for one quickie

    • quickie of?

      • happy time

i'd like that - where do i find happy time

Well, the airport express to the city is probably the most predictable and reliable train service on the planet. You can even check in in the city and then get on the train. Check the timetable as it's rock solid.

Lantau island has the big buddha.

    • thanks Frugal Rock i'll do that.

      • Not open until 9pm tho for the big buddha.

Everywhere will be crowned if it is on the weekend after 9 till 2~3 am weekday will be better but not suggest spend $40 for return train ride.

I really don't think 3 hours is enough time to go into the city, it's about 20-30 mins each way. Assuming you need to wait 10 mins for the train each way then there goes 1 hour.

Plus you will need to go through security again to get into the departures area, so if there's a queue that might take another 15+ mins.

Don't forget you need to be at the gate at least 30 mins before the flight departs.

If I were in your shoes I would go straight through the transfer security check and get into the departures area, then kill an hour getting some food and browsing some shops.

3 hours isn't that long at an airport and it should go reasonably quick if you have a book or Nintendo.

I think that is OP's choice. I think most would agree that the HK airport train operates like clockwork and can be planned reliably. I think a fun person might consider train to central, picture with IFC building, ferry to Kowloon walk to Tsim Sha Tsui and train back from there. At very least it could be pre-planned pretty accurately.

          • @[Deactivated]: Of course it's OP's choice, never said that wasn't the case. I'm just pointing out how much time OP actually has available to site-see, and the fact there's not much margin for error if OP misses a stop, gets lost, etc.

There is some decent local food to be found in the airport if you look around.

            • @Snoozer: any recommendations for decent local food in the airport?

i have a 5.5 hours later in the year but not keen on going downtown

wouldn't bother, youd have to get the MTR and then the gondola which could take hours depending on how many people there are and not worth the $$

if you had 6 hours then yeah head into town and eat the food but if it was me, 3 hours i'd just stick at the aiport.

    • Airport express is awesome. I've forgotten how many times I've done a last minute dash from sham shui po to airport with 10mins to spare for boarding :P For 3 hours, I would say you probably have 1 hour for a late dinner then dashing back, but probably only worth it if you are already familiar with HK and if you already have checked in your luggage. Otherwise safer to stay in terminal and chill out.

My suggestion, and what I did on my way to Europe, get a shower and maybe a massage or something in one of the private lounges in Hong Kong Airport.

I get off an Airplane after 9 hours, and then have a further 13 hours to go, I would like to feel refreshed.

  • If you had an earlier arrival you could have headed to the nearby Citygate Outlets, but it closes at 10pm. (Crap bargains anyway!) Gven the timeframe, leaving the the airport to head into town would be risky. There is an Imax theatre at the airport that has late sessions so you may be able to catch a movie. There’s also shopping (Disneyland Hong Kong store for example) or heading to one of the airport restaurants for some roast goose!

You are not actually there looking to kill 3 hours.

Will take at least 30 mins to get off the plane and into the transit lounge.
You way be asked to stay there for security purposes.
If not you will need to be in the boarding area no later than 1 hour prior to departure.
So maybe an hour to find somewhere to eat and drink.
Probably some duty frees shops to check out.

At that time of night you will be very tired so probably will just want to chill out.

But like others said - Not much to do at that time of night as most shops will be closed anyway.,

  • There might be security checks or delays from transfer planes.
Buy a airport lounge pass and chill there.
