40GB | 30 Days | $4.90 @ Catch Connect (Usually $49.90)

520

Catch Connect offering its $49.90 30-day prepaid plan for $4.90.

Details:

  • 40GB included
  • Unlimited national talk & text
  • 200 Standard international mins to select countries
  • Optus 4G Plus Network provider
  • 30-day plan expiry
  • 'New services only $4.90 for first 30 days and after initial purchase, recharges $49.90. Not in conjunction with any other offer. Excludes plan swaps and recharges. Activate SIM within 30 days.'

Deal expiry:

  • The website does not appear to advertise deal expiry. However, in the T&C's it states:
  • 'You must activate your chosen prepaid plan on catchconnect.com.au within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised on the promotion (whichever is earlier).'
  • So I assume you have 30 days from date of purchase to activate to get this deal. I have not tested this though as I have previously activated within the 30 days.

Auto-recharge:

  • It automatic recharges unless you opt out. But auto-recharge can be disabled by logging into your account after activation.

N.B.:
I am a classic OzBargain porter (port in and out every month to try and get the best prepaid deals). Kogan Mobile is usually my staple but you have to wait 40 days between recharges, so this is a nice alternative. Plus this has the same value as Kogan + international minutes.

Use with ShopBack for $3 cashback! Brings it down to $1.90 for 30 days

    • This should be added to the description/title. Nice tip!

      • This is very OzBargain noob of me, but I don't use any cashback or shopback programs :(

        How do you sign up?

        • google shopback or cashback, go to their websites and press sign up.

        • +1

Sign up with Cashrewards or Shopback on their websites.

          https://www.cashrewards.com.au
          https://www.shopback.com.au

They sometimes have refer a friend bonuses to get you started.

Then when you see a bargain on OzBargain, look for the Cashback symbol and word under the main thumbnail picture and click on that. Then choose the one you want, click on it and it will take you to whichever one you chose. From there, you can click through to the retailer and the sale should be counted.

They also have mobile apps and browser plugins. Make sure to disable any Adblock while using it (I just use Google Chrome Canary which I have left standard) and only add the product into your basket after clicking through from the cashback site.

          • @Daabido: Just remember Catch uses Optus network and Optus does not provide SMS delivery report, if texting is important to you, there is a Belong deal on Telstra network or find another Telstra or Vodafone network based deal.

  • So just to confirm, if I used catch connect last month and am currently with kogan I can go back to catch connect when the kogan service runs out?

    • That is what I plan on doing. As far as I know, you are free to return as a 'new customer', as you are porting back in from a different provider. Every telco I have ported in and out with has been the same.

    • that's what I've been doing. Kogan just expired and set up a new acount with Catch. works a treat :)

    • The one issue I have been having with Catch is that I cannot use the gmail trick (using dot or plus sign in the address) to appear as a different email address to be a new customer. Catch always recognises a dot or plus sign added to my email address as being the same email address as one without the dot or plus sign.

Anyone else having this issue? How do you get around it?

      • Dot method works for me. Signed up and all emails come through. A lot of spam though

  • If I am on the 90 days grace period of Kogan (post expiry of prepaid plan), can I still port to another service? Is it the usual porting procedure or I need to contact Kogan for porting to another provider?

    • As far as I am aware, you just port out of them like normal. I have never had to contact the previous provider when porting out (and I have ported out of Kogan many, MANY times haha).

      • Thanks, but I am asking specifically while being on the 90 days grace period. That is, my plan has expired, then the 20 days incoming calls period has expired too. Can I still port normally without additional procedure(s) ?

        • Yes, I can confirm it works, all done online. Kogan => amaysim about 6 weeks after the Kogan plan expired.

  • Is Catch Connect like Kogan Mobile in the sense that:

    • You are sent a voucher code to activate
    • You are separately sent a SIM starter pack which itself has no value, and is not attached to the voucher
    • You can turn off auto-recharge shortly after activating?

I also recall anecdotal comments in previous Catch Connect deals saying that porting in/out of Catch Connect is sometimes an absolute headache.

From OP, I can see that there is a stated 30-day expiry but unknown as to whether it is enforced.

    • You are not sent a voucher like Kogan. You receive the starter pack in the mail, which has the 40GB included value and the sim (from memory - did it back in February).
You can turn off auto-recharge after activating.
I ported into them in February and out of them in late March no problem.

Correct, not sure if they enforce it. When I receive the starter pack, I will see if there is an expiry date on it somewhere.

      • Have you ever ported back into Catch as a new customer? If yes how did they not tell that you were a new customer?

        • Oops that question should have been how did you sign up again as a new customer?

    • I received the letter from Catch enclosing the sim starter pack and also the voucher at the same time.

  • Additional data: $10 for 1GB

    will this be charged automatically?

    • No, you can turn off the auto-recharge function in your account settings etc.

  • I was looking for a deal for a backup sim and this looks ok until i realise that it is optus….

Already have a data stream with Optus and a telstra. Just need a small 365 day data in VF network. Suggestion anyone?

  • This is very good if you want to call international one of the included countries. I just put the included sim into the second slot of my Xiaomi and can select which sim I use to call, very convenient. Just add a reminder in your calendar to cancel.

My porting took 3 days last time. So if you still want to use your phone normally everyday. Do not port to them

    • I had the opposite experience. It took me about 1/2 an hour to port from Telstra to Catch in February.

      Where did you port from?

      • optus
i tried twice. Same thing happens

        • +5

Oh ok now I understand why it took so long for the transfer for you. Going from one provider to another on the same network can often take a long time. It has nothing to do with Catch Connect. It is always recommended to only transfer from one network to another.

So for you it would have been better to order a free Telstra Sim online. Then transfer to Telstra (no need to sign up for a plan) and then to Catch Connect. This can all be done in a couple of hours. This is very quick and easy to do.

          • @Rodo: Thanks for the suggestion. I may try kogan to catch then. Maybe it will be faster.

          • @Rodo:

Going from one provider to another on the same network can often take a long time.

I've always known of this and I find it so odd. Something to do with some additional code that needs to be provided? Something like that…

            • +1

@illumination: Agreed. You would expect that it would be much quicker on the same network. I have read here recently that that the transfer has been reasonably quick on the Optus network so maybe they have improved things but not sure when @talentmyj did the transfer. But in any case I am not taking a chance just yet and will continue to transfer out to another network.

So according to OP, kogan has a 40 day grace period but catch doesnt? Does this mean if I were using catch's 4.90 and it expires, I can port the same number back in literally the day after expiry so long as I use a new email and I quickly port to another network then back to catch?

Warning! If you are porting from Optus/Amaysim/Coles be aware it might take a few days, while this is annoying if you prepare it's not a big issue however also be aware it might take up to 24h after your old service is disconnected to get it active! I waited 6hrs with no service b4 I lost it with their customer service ppl and demanded they put me through to the ports team who got it active in 5mins my friend who joined at the same time as me has to wait until the following day! This was just b4 Easter weekend so I was seriously concerned I was going to have no service until the next week!
I ported out from them to Amaysim a couple days ago, I put request through at 3pm received email from Optus and amaysim straight away but port took until 9.30am the following day, not as bad as some ppl report and I started it 3days b4 exp to be safe!

As has been said many times on Ozbargain, it is always best to only port from one network to another. For some unknown reason it always takes far longer to port between providers on the same network. I am surprised that you did not know this considering you are a serial porter. If you had ported to another network then it would not have taken so long for the port. By doing this it has never taken me more than 2 hours total time to port to or from Catch. This can be achieved by ordering a free Telstra SIM, porting to them and then porting straight back to the Optus network.

      • They often say they need to manually push it through on same network. You need a new Telstra sim each port via same network or can use same one do you know?

        • +1

Yes need a new Telstra SIM each time. It is very easy (and free) to order a stash of them from their website so you can have one ready to go when you want to do a port.

          • @Rodo: Thanks, wasn’t sure, plus only done once.. will order in bulk for next time

          • @Rodo: So Telstra let's you activate a sim without needing to add a recharge on activation? Years ago I used to use the free Vodafone Sims as a go between until they started requiring a recharge to activate! I know many need you to buy at least a $10 starter sim or recharge! Thanks that's handy to know I'll head to Telstra site now and order a bunch!

            • @Clarky77: Yes correct you can port to Telstra without needing to recharge on activation. They have changed their prepaid plans recently but still no need to recharge. As soon as the service is active with Telstra you can port straight out again (so I am usually with them for less than 30 minutes).

    • If you are porting from Optus/Amaysim/Coles be aware it might take a few days

This doesn't quite sound right because Kogan Mobile uses Vodafone, whereas Optus/Amaysim/Coles are Optus resellers/MVNOs. The issue is when you port from one telco to another within the same "parent" telco. So if you were porting between Optus/Amaysim/Coles, it wouldn't be surprising to experience the issue you just pointed out, but it shouldn't be an issue between Optus/Amaysim/Coles and Kogan Mobile.

My bad - I thought this was a Kogan mobile thread LOL

  • But service is exactly the same as Optus! I won't be adding them to my monthly rotation of ports though because of the downtime! I've never had a port take more than 12hrs in 5years of almost monthly porting and I've never had my old service drop out and had to wait more than 30mins in all that time either! Just something to consider and I really hope they can improve this in future as they are a great option for anyone who likes the Optus network now that amaysim is Optus owned (not many fantastic deals like a couple years ago)
    Just my 3c worth! Goodluck

  • Can I use this as a data sim?

  • Anyone else getting "Some items cannot be shipped to this postcode."? Bought plenty without ever seeing this message. Metro area as well.

    • Same. I wonder if its expired?

  • With the $3 cashback through ShopBack - comes out to $1.90

    WARNING:
Catchconnect reset my account to Autorecharge without permission.

I have the original time I unticked Autorecharge, and below was displayed on their site afterwards.

You've got 10 days remaining. Your service will not be automatically recharged. Turn on auto recharge. Your plan inclusions expire on:
Link to Subscribe/unsubscribe to marketing messages
    Expiry: 01/09/2019

Today it was back to being automatically recharged.

So maybe check your accounts and record the time and a snapshot for TIO fun.

  • People, 6 of my relatives are coming over from overseas for a wedding, i like to ask if i can get 5 x the plans under 1 account? or I need a different account for each plan purchase?

  • Has anyone any experience with activating AFTER the 30 days is up?
this is for my daughter, first time phone user - she currently has one month Lebara but I also got the 4 months circles.life card so not sure which one to activate first - whichever one I don't will obviously be out of the current window, not sure if we would actually lose everything then…

    • I missed the advertised time period to activate and activated 4 days late. Still all good, got my 40gb. Not sure how cash back will come thru tho as I bought during promo cashback too. Will see

  • I have cancelled Auto Recharge but Catch Connect reseted the Auto Recharge back. They charged without my authorization.

  • @gotyourback I had purchased this on 01-Nov-2019 and activated the SIM on 15-Nov-2019. The cashback was supposed to be confirmed in 75 days, i.e. 16-Jan-2020 but it is still Pending. Could you have a check please? I will message you my Shopback Reference number.

  • They seemed to have removed the international calls.
