Buffalo LinkStation NAS 4TB - $398

60

Looks like a good deal, next cheapest on StaticIce is $527.10 from TechBuy.

Probably cheaper to build your own with an AMD E350 and two 2TB drives these days

  • This is the old slower version. LS-QVL is the fast new version. Would only be about $50 more built the same.

      $248 Linkstation Quad Pro
      $88 Samsung 2TB drive (x2)

      $424 Total

So not even $50, together with a faster server and more expansion capability.

  • Something like a Thecus N2200 with two 2TB drives would also cost you around the same amount.

    shrug

It's not a bad deal or anything, but it doesn't seem special.

    • Something that I often wonder, I have experience with a Netgear NAS which used its own propriety file system. Are the Thecus' the same way?

      • I have never heard of such a stupid thing, but after Googling have learnt that the cheaper versions of ReadyNAS apparently do use a strange file structure format (16K blocks) that are useful to sparc processors but not readable by x86 machines.

I doubt that there are many NAS suppliers who are stupid enough to do the same. I have Dlink DNS-313 and DNS323 formatted to EXT2 or EXT3. I have recently done data recovery by pulling the drive and using a dock, then running a freeware Windows app to review and restore stuff.

      • I hear you, I too had nothing but BAD experiences with the early Netgear ReadyNAS product - but worse than that was the poor support Netgear did/didn't provide. Never have been able to look at another Netgear product the same way since. After that, I have had custom built boxes running FreeNAS and also used the Thecus Products - both very good solutions. And if you've got a little more money I would reccommend looking at the new Cisco Small Business Range of NAS.

Probably is cheaper to build your own, but for those who want an out of the box solution, this is a good deal.

  • Wasnt this on Harris technology for about the same price a while back ?

  • was thinking about building my own, had a quick look on whirlpool, any recommended gear?

  • cheesestringer just plan your case our carefully and maybe the number of sata ports the motherboard.
Check out msy and umart for parts.
I probably need to change cases :( I am maxed out at 8 drives.

My NAS I have at home is as follows:

      • Silverstone TJ08 Case
      • Thermaltake Toughpower 750w PSU
      • Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H motherboard
      • AMD Athlon X2 4400+
      • 4GB G.Skill NT DDR2-800
      • Adaptec 31205 Unified SAS/SATA 12-port HBA w/ BBU (Battery Backup Unit)
      • 6 x Hitachi 7K2000 2TB SATA2 HDD's

Running Ubuntu Server 11.04 like a dream w/ Samba, OpenSSHd, Apache and Torrentflux.

      • Good on ya, but not very energy efficient compared to the standalone NAS devices.

        • Tell me about it… $0.56 a day at 135w 24/7. Works out to ~$17.50 a month.

          If I were to switch the motherboard/CPU with a new AMD E350 APU… $0.28 a day and ~$8.80 a month.

        • My NAS runs at less than 10W.

It pays for itself over the 'old PC' route in months.

        • sane: what NAS do you have?

        • i've got an old e1400 + antec 450w supply which i got from kerbside throwouts and i measured consumption at 55-60w. the nas specs says 45w.

        • That 45W quote is max. Measured you will be looking at 10-20W. My LS-QVL is 14W idle (also with a 45W quote on the page).

        • true, but even at a 50w difference it would still take a couple of years for me to just break even on a nas purchase.

    • ah ok thanks :) yeh i was just trying to find a small case that can fit a fair amount of hard drives, just use some 2tb green drives.

Would make one if I had time :P

  • Looks good if you can get it cheaper without the hard drives. 1TB x 4 is a waste when 2tb would be more practical. Plus its only got slower first generation SATA-150 speed controller.
