[iOS] $0: HanYou - Chinese Recognizer @ iTunes - Offline OCR Using Camera (Normally $5.99)

230

Not having a chinese bone in my body (at least according to my known family tree), this appeals to me, but have no idea on the quality here. I may just end up in a chinese prison after insulting a local by telling them to go get Notted when asking for directions to the nearest bathroom.

Note Appshopper shows this as $5.99 but I downloaded it for free from the Aust App store a few minutes before posting this. It maybe mean its either just listed free or just ending soon.

Maybe some of our Chinese speaking friends can vouch for the effectiveness of this

It keeps translating everthing as “All Hail Chairman Mao”. I think I need to update.

    • Well if that is the case I am sure you will get great service in China even services you may not want … 👮🏽‍♀️

      • All good. Updated and it says Xi Jinping now.

Google translate app is fantastic. And free.
    Haven't tried this one though.

    • I use Google Translate for Japanese and am very happy with the results.

Always fun to show people how to use it in OCR camera mode.

    • Yes but it didnt work in China

    Chinese Recognizer @ iTunes

Scott Morrison could use one of these…

    • Kevin Rudd down vote this app.

    • Where do people get off calling that racism? At worst it’s just garden variety ignorance. How many people can distinguish Japanese from Korean or Chinese features? I dare say it’s racist to suggest that you can.

Not that I’ve any interest in defending Morrison who’s clearly being an utter dick to think he’s being clever greeting any stranger in another language.

      • Isn't there some Chinese characters in Japanese written language?

        • +2

          Yes, this is true.
Japanese use the same form of Kanji as Taiwanese use.
Mainland China uses a simplified form of Kanji.

      • Its not that hard to distinguish between them, once you make an effort to get to know them. It is racist in that you are not able to distinguish between them because you never made the effort to get to know them in the first place, most likely because a mental block prevented you from associating with them.

Y can distinguish by sight can ya? Damn. That’s a skill a lot of asian people don’t posess.

@0jay: Yep, with the Korean woman, that ScoMo mistook for Chinese, it was really easy, Chinese are for the most part, not that stocky.

@laser: Ok so that kind of generalisation is simply false. What would constitute a ‘Chinese build’ is extraordinarily variable. It is a huge country with an enormously diverse population and suggesting there are physical traits that correspond to some racial profile is categorically racist, yo.

    • Apparently the Korean lady said something that sounded like Ni Hao (Hello in Chinese) with someone else just right before she approached Scott, which confused Scott so naturally he replied with Ni Hao. I think that might be a trap:P

Just downloaded and tried it briefly. Not that accurate and quite cumbersome to use to br useful. May be fun trying it out but won’t consider it a productivity tool. Certainly I am also sceptical of what user information is being collected as well (I am a Chinese native speaker from Hong Kong)
