These any good? My Globals are getting pretty old

Looks like they're probably still too pricey, not top quality steel

    • HI Sage - in light of my initial comment below, can I ask how you have gone over the longer term with your Global knives?
More particularly with your assesment of the cutting edge and edge retention after sharpening.

i have had mine about 8 years. to be honest i was never particularly impressed they look the same as the ones in the picture though not sure if they are in fact the same. I think ill look elsewhere this time.

        • Thanks for getting back to me on that Sage.

I don't belive these Globals are handmade :(

edit: I mean not forged :(

  • Curious, what happens if you put them in the dishwasher?

    • I would think they would rust?

      • Mine did. I'll call them rust specks. I only hand wash them now

    • Yep mine rusted too

Best knives I have ever owned, was lucky enough to get these as a wedding present.

They sharpen up well but soon develop 'pitted' and unsatisfactory edges has been my experience with MANY Global knives I'm very sorry to say, certainly when compared to others in same cost & repute category.
It is said that there are many Global copies out there so it is possible I've had my hands on crappy (copied) ones, though by far & for the most part I believe they were real Globals.
I have certainly spoken to people who love their set of Globals. I just don't know of any other name brand knives this cost category that I have this (disappointing) experience with.
Knives and quality thereof is such a wildly mixed bag. Take Wiltshire & Scan Pans' for example, at the 'cheap end' they are particularly average, but the expensive ones… excellent.

Shuns'… excellent (very expensive) knives BUT you are going to need extra patience and above average sharpening skills especially with the ones with 'thicker' blades.
Another weird but fascinating truth… the very cheap (costing) 'Kiwi' knives cut AMAZINGLY… BUT edge retention is not so good. So if you love to spend time sharpening knives - get them.
I fully intend to get some one day but then, I'm a die hard sharpening freak. Not in too much of a hurry as have FAR more knives than I care to admit.

oh, and about rust… yes, Globals will show signs of rust/rust spots and tarnish though this is VERY rare and more usually happens when the knives have been poorly stored & cared for.

If you don't mind the look of the stand and can get your hands on the older "Synergy" 7 pce set i think you will be better off. I believe it has a full size bread knife as opposed to a smaller one in this set and can usually be found for under $200. Global knifes have been a game changer in my kitchen… Just treat them a bit more gently then a heavier German steel knife.

  • Have the exact same set at home, certainly cannot be used to chop chicken bones/pieces. Ended up chipping away bits of the blade, super disappointed!!
