Philips MASTER LED (Latest '19) CRI=90 7W MR16 60D DIMMABLE Globes $13.95 (+$9.95 Del / Free w'$100 Spend) @ Simply Energy Store

100

Pretty much one of the best, if not the best, retro-fit DIMMABLE MR16 bulb on the market. It has fully enclosed casing (no ventilation gaps), good colour reproduction, and good compatibility with wide range of existing transformers and dimmers. It is also the 'cheapest' dimmable MR16 that I can find so far with good compatibility. Recommend for use in dimmable MR16 settings, but I suggest other cheaper MR16 bulbs if you are using them as non-dimmable ones.

Simply Energy Store has the cheapest price with the lowest threshold for free delivery (Reduction Revolution, as pointed out below by luka, has it for same price through their website, but a higher $200 minimum spend. RR's eBay store used to be cheaper with 10% off code even with $9.95 postage, if you buy 10 bulbs it'll be at $13.55 each. However RR has since revised the price and postage structure of its eBay listing and now more expensive).

EDIT 10/05 PM: 3000K colour seems to be on Back Order. I'd guess it should come back quite easily next week? But as noted above and below in comments, Reduction Revolution sell them for the same price, but has a higher minimum $200 spend to get free shipping.
EDIT 14/05 PM: Both 3000K and 4000K on Back Order (customer service quoted more stock to arrive at start of next week for both colours). For the 3000K one, the unit price is slightly cheaper, if you want to buy 10+ units, at LightOnline.com.au at $13.20 (https://www.lightonline.com.au/philips-master-led-mr16-7w-60…). However LightOnline does have a higher minimum spend for free shipping, at $160 (so that'll be 13 units to go over the threshold).
EDIT 21/05 PM: All back in stock.

Philips' website isn't exactly great to navigate around, and I could only find the official product page via Google. Here's the official product page for the 3000K colour listing: http://www.lighting.philips.com.au/prof/led-lamps-and-tubes/… . Below info has been copied-pasted from the Store website.

  • DIMMABLE Globes

Using a normal dimmer light switch?

    • Yup.

      • Do you need any special transformers for these or any electronic ones?

        • Gas based is better

          • @[Deactivated]: Which gas?

            • @jv: NOS

              • @[Deactivated]: Can you recommend any good ones?

                • @jv: Racer's Edge is the one you want

            • @jv: Fart

        • Generally, it is likely that you won't need special/electronic transformers for these bulbs.

However, it is not a guarantee to work with all, although the online forums I've read (eg whirlpool) suggest they have the highest chance of compatibility. And I've read arguments against using them with older transformers even if it'll work due to the higher wattage drive of them may damage/shorten the lifespan of the LED bulbs.

Personally, I've bought a few of the previous gen models to test whether they'll work with mine. They did work quite nicely and hence I've purchased more gradually (via RR eBay, but now they've bumped the price) and replaced all the dimmable halogen at my place and my sibling's place. I did not have to change any transformers.

          • @zrmx: I got some Osram (non-dimmable) ones from Bunnings and they work great. I haven't replaced any others since they're on dimmers… Might give these a try…

    Nice find!

  • Currently have halogen MR16s (with dimmers) in our place, so can we install these without having to change transformers?

    • apparently…

    • +1

They worked for me without changing transformers.

    • I bought some standard Philips MR16s and they produced a flicker effect after being on for a few minutes. I purchased the Philips Master ones and they work perfectly in my apartment. The previous globes were halogens.

  • Also, I assume these will work best with a trailing edge dimmer?

  • 500 lumens from 7W isnt so great. Especially for $14. But i guess the backwards compatibility and being dim-able are the features.

    • Yup. It is a reasonable compromise.

I wish there are ones that can do ~ or > 80Lm/W with wide compatibility too. The previous gen Master Value range was able to give 650lm at 8W. It seems to be a limitation on the current technology (harder to drive higher Lm efficiency at lower wattage, while at higher wattage you'll need to come up with better heat dissipation, which will be hard to do with enclosed casing), and they've sacrificed the Lm/W efficiency for higher CRI rating.

However, another selling point is that they are fully "enclosed" without any ventilation gaps, so closer to traditional halogen downlights and not having to worry about debris/dust falling through as much.

    • 500 lumens from 7W isnt so great.

generally, you'll have more than one on you ceiling.

      • These are still going to be noticeably dimmer than 50W halogens. But probably worth it.

One could also consider replacing the whole unit with LED downlights rather than retrofit MR16s which are a compromise product.

        • Yup, they are more comparable (slightly brighter) to 35W halogens for me, but still a lot more efficient than halogen.

Whole LED units definitely are better overall, at a slight higher cost if you are in NSW and eligible for Energy Saver Household Rebate (or much less cost if you are in VIC) https://energysaver.nsw.gov.au/households/rebates-and-discou… .

    • Actually the telling number for me is CRI=90. Rather have lower lumens for better quality light.

  • The same price here:
    https://reductionrevolution.com.au/products/philips-master-l…
(with the 3000K model in stock)

  • This is a good bulb, tried one in 4000k and it gives nice stable colour without flicker and any hissing sound like some other bulbs do.
Are there any accredited providers by Victorian Energy Saver program (Melbourne Metro area) to offset some cost of replacing old halogens with these?

  • what would you recommend for non dimmable?
