      yes.

Did you really think that you would get a smart ethernet switch for $23?.

      • So basically what is the difference between a managed and unmanaged switch?

I looking for one to manage 4 devices in home. Thanks

          • @alvian: Thanks, much appreciated. I will get this from Amazon as I have an account.

            • @oldhippy: Yeah, basically, if it’s just for home and you already have a router and you just want a few more ports, unmanaged is fine. Your router will do most of the heavy lifting on a home network.

@pegaxs: Thanks for the reply, you have summed up my situation nicely

For those too lazy to google - from the CSRIO website
Managed switches provide all the features of an unmanaged switch and provide the ability to configure, manage, and monitor your LAN. And this gives you greater control over how data travels over the network and who has access to it. Also, managed switches use protocols such as the Simple Network Management Protocol, or what we call SNMP, for monitoring the devices on the network. SNMP is a protocol that facilitates the exchange of management information between network devices. SNMP queries can determine the health of the network or the status of a particular device. By
displaying this data in an easily understood format, IT managers located at a central site can monitor the performance of the network and quickly detect and repair network problems without having to physically interact with the switch.

@Jazza2400: Sorry not lazy I just prefer to hear from knowledgeable people on here.

            • @oldhippy: I was lazy and upset that nobody had explained it hence why I searched for it haha.

This is a ProSAFE switch so it should come with Netgear limited "lifetime" warranty, yet Kogan, an official partner, lists 2-year manufacturer warranty and invites you to purchase a 3-year extended warranty.

      Very fishy behaviour from Kogan.

      • Yeah that's funny. It's officially got a limited lifetime manufacturers warranty. But Kogan claims 2 year manufacturers warranty.

Extended third party warranty does not apply to this product that would be a total waste of money.

Also note these contradictory warranty statements from Netgear.

          https://www.netgear.com.au/business/documents/prosafe-lifeti…

Q: How long are products covered?
A: For as long as the original buyer owns the ProSAFE product. Original proof of purchase is required to receive warranty service.

Q: What happens if a product is discontinued?
A: Per NETGEAR standard hardware warranty, product that fails after it has been discontinued will be replaced with a new unit, a refurbished unit, or NETGEAR will refund the purchase price of the unit, less a reasonable usage charge.

          https://www.netgear.com.au/about/warranty/

ProSAFE Limited Lifetime Warranty applies to all NETGEAR Business products, except for Fully Managed Switches, and ends five years after the product is listed as “End of Life” here. Fully Managed Switches are warranted for their lifetime, as long as the original bona fide end user continues to own or use the product.

@alvian: So basically Netgear is saying by that it has warranty only for up to 5 years after they make the product EOL. So really that's not lifetime warranty at all. How can that not be dodgy?.

So the model could have been made EOL five years ago so even if you buy it new now that it would have no warranty at all?. How would the ACCC not have some thing to say about that.

Does a "Lifetime Warranty" refer to the purchasers life, the sellers life, the products life, or some other lifetime?

        • +1

It is whatever the manufacturer defines it to be, and therein lies the problem with lifetime warranties, and also the reason why lifetime warranties are prefixed with the adjective Limited.
