Soon Huawei will be dirt cheap

    • +9

Agree. Best to wait a bit longer for potential big price drop. I bet a lot sellers are trying to sell off all their existing stocks before the price drop further.

      • Could be. I don't think their problems will solve any time soon. On top of spying on citizens and companies' secrets (eg Akhan Diamond technology), China/Huawei now has the ability to shut down most of the infrastructure in many countries, a risk that many western countries don't want to take.

Just a heads up, if you don't mind the security risk, you will never get updates. Some Google services might work on currently registered devices at least for the next 90 days.

    • +2

In less than 90 days, Google will prevent Huawei phone from using Google essential service, apps such as YouTube, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Map…etc…BE WARNED!!!!!!!!

      • +3

They already stated existing phones would not be affected.

        • +2

But these existing phones will no longer get new OS updates. I would be a bit more if I got one of their $1000+ phones and realise I wouldn't be getting android Q later this year.

  • +1

This is a very nice phone. Too bad, it has no NFC…

    • -1

And soon no updates, Google apps, Play store or YouTube

      • +7

Google says existing will still have access to store and apps.

        • +4

Can't users just install Google Apps manually, like people do with any custom rom?

          • +1

@dheywood: Yes. You already have to do this if you buy the chinese version of a phone since Google is banned there.

  • +8

Too bad, soon they become 2nd largest phone manufacturer after Samsung leaving Apple behind, Google pulls the plug on its Android citing sanctions….. consumers left with less choices and less competition

    • +6

I mean look at their logo. It has cut Apple into pieces!

    • +3

Not Google as such. The us government. I expect Google would prefer they keep using Android. China may actually be capable of replacing Android with the insane patriotism the citizens have!

      • Yes, but it takes a very long time to develop an OS.

        • +1

They will most likely keep using android (ASOP) and either you have to install Google Apps manually or they create their own store.

    • There's still plenty of competition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_phone_brands_by…

It wont take long for another company to take Huawei's place.

  • Best to wait for Huawei, prices can only go down :P

  • +6

Can imagine after Huawei gone Apple raise phone Price 200%

  • -2

2 things can happen. Either prices will go down. Or the Political Issues will be fixed.

I think this is the best time to buy Huawei. Certainly it's a gamble.

    • +1

I agree with you.Australia is lucky,we pay the least for Huawei recently.
Meng got arrested on 1st Dec last year,JB had this telstra plan deal on the 6th Dec,you basically get a p20 pro for free when you sign up a 24.mm plan for $55/m,I signed up one,the receip shows the phone was purchased using $999 gift voucher,I also received $100 JB hi fi gift card.I feel this is paid by PR department of Huawei.a week or 2 later, same deal except you get a mate 20 for free.last month you get a new release p30 for free.no other country get deals like this.

you are right ,it's a gamble, let's hope political issue gets resolved, because me,my wife,my parents all purchased Huawei within the last half year.

      • It wasn't free. Getting phones free with a 24 month contract is common practice. The phone's value is ammortised into the monthly plan payments.

        • +1

You get it for free after paying $1,320.

Lots of fate news about huawei potiantial ban, the ban is for future phone if it's not approved by us gov, current model will still works fine.

    • He's left 90 days for a trade deal to happen. Very obviously the ban is for political reasons. Both sides seem to be digging their heels in though.

I like the Nova 3i a lot. I moved from 6s+ to the Nova 3i. But yes the micro USB……I didn't think much of it initially but having come from a lightning charge cable which is reversable to the micro USB I find it is shitting me off more and more each time I charge. I think the recent changes regarding google and Huawei will cripple Huawei and give me a reason to buy a new phone with either lightning or USB C charging port.

    • +2

I had a reversible micro USB lead a little while back, was blitzwolf brand. Maybe see if they still sell them.
I could plug it in either way and the phone would charge.

Had it in the car but it disappeared one day, someone borrowed it.
Phones not usbC so doesn’t worry me.

      • +1

Thanks so much, that would be awesome.

I hate dismissing something as first world problems, but first world problems.

With the news, I won't be looking at the huawei for long~` time until they solve the US restrictions issues.

    • I don't think that will solve any time soon. On top of spying on citizens and companies secrets (eg Akhan Dimon technology), China/Huawei now has the ability to shut down most of the infrastructure in Western countries, a risk that many countries don't want to take.

      • The US can do that too btw.

        • No they can't. Nice try, MSS.

You need to differentiate between democracy and communism to understand the US as a government and as private businesses and Chinese which the government, the ownership and the people, means the same.

Do you think the US is stealing the Chinese technology?
Or they need to spy on Australia? We are the members of the 5 eyes.
Or do you think the CIA could convince Apple to unlock their phones?
Do you think the head of the Interpol was jailed in the US?
Do you think if YOU shout "Go to hell Mr President" in Times square, is the same if you do it in "Tiananmen"?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: True that…Apple refused to unlock Iphone used by San Barnardino shooter citing civil liberty law. They had to hire a Israeli company to unlock it.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Did you read all the stuff Snowden leaked?

They can tap into any phone or laptop and turn on your camera stealthily. They can also shut down power even in allied countries if they start misbehaving.

There's a reason the US wants this guy.

Do you seriously believe the US doesn't do any spying on people? Not just their own citizens. They even hacked Angela Merkel's personal phone and listened to all of her private conversations. They're willing to do this to their allies. Imagine what they do to their enemies. And yes, they hack China all the time. They hacked into Huawei's servers even.

            • -2

@lostn: Snowden is a traitor, a threat and a fugitive criminal and his statements are worthless.

Apart from that, even though I am all for citizens liberties and smaller government, I understand that a government has to have some measures in place to protect its citizens.

You have to understand the difference between a government spying to nullify potential dangers to other citizens and a government spying to incriminate you for political reasons.

      • What is your stance against Samsung Group then? Controls a lot of sectors in terms of technology and innovation. Similar country to China who relies on immediate neighboring countries for assistance. Rostec from Russia who is a leader in defense technology? Is also a state-owned company that supplies to other nations including Australia and the US.

        • -1

Let me make it simple for you.

First Australian politicians are jokes, they never put Australians first.
Second, the bigger the government, the scarier the situation.
Third, Dictatorship is nasty when it comes from an international corporation which is censorship mostly (Twitter, Facebook, Google,… ).

BUT, Dictatorship is brutal, when it comes from a totalitarian government which means painful death.

Russia is almost China. Different location!

Also you are wrong about Samsung's ownership and you are wrong about comparing Samsung with Huawei or South Korea to China,

  • Just buy it for DJI flying… All concerns solved! :D

  • my pick: the 8x. Nfc works, 2 sim plus mem card, reasonable camera really good in the dark flawless large display. Downside: stone age port despite crisp display checkout scanners struggle to read barcodes.

  • Also comes with no android OS soon ;)
