FREE - WhatsApp App for iPhone

2160

WhatsApp messenger is a cross platform smartphone messenger currently available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones. The application utilizes push notifications to instantly get messages from friends, colleagues and family. Switch from SMS to WhatsApp to send and receive messages, pictures, audio notes, and video messages at no cost. All features are included without the need for extra in-application purchases.

I know when I bought this it was $1.19 and it was worth every penny! Good for people not on Cap Plans with Data. I like the group chats and I find it useful to send pictures… I use this more than SMS…

*Good for overseas messages
*Doesn't need an extra login and password. Existing contacts used (people who have the app).
*User friendly - looks like SMS.

hi :)

**Updated:

Oh wells its back to $1.19. Still worth every penny.

    • +17

      Literally tonnes?

      • +26

mine has already saved me about 800 kg… (i've only had it a month)

        • +4

          what denominations?

          Cos you know… 800kg of 50c coins isn't as much as 800kg of $100 notes…

      • Words. How do they work??

  • Has been free on Android for a while.. :D

    • +6

only for the first year, then it's $2/year afterwards.

      • +8

register your mobile phone number via Iphone's whatsapp
then use the same number on your android, the expiration status becomes "Unknown"
I never need to pay the $2 license fee

        • what if i don't have an iphone?

        • im sure any of your mates has one.

        • lol nice loophole mate :D

        • +5

tested today, my account says paid and expiration until 2022

we would be communicating with telepathy by then :O

        • Can you explain how to do this? Could not find 'register'…..

    • First year is free. $1.99/year after that.

    • dont get your point?

    • they changed. was always free on android. Then they got hungry and wanted to charge $2/year after 1st year.

      • -1

considering the number of people saying how good this is… $2/year hardly seems greedy.

        • well it is once off on ios. Plus there are more alternatives on android that are free anyway sif anyone will use it. I know I wont. Though i am not sure if you can just uninstall it after a year, flash custom rom, then reinstall will reset the free period.

anyway it was good time to be on it. I moved on

  • +1

This app is awesome, would've paid $10 for it.

    • +2

exactly - with international SMS costing 50cents? nowadays, this is awesome. I love it!

  • +3

AMAZING APP… makes work life so fun

    • No idea why your getting negged for that but i voted you up

  • Great app. Bought it a long time ago and very useful. (one of the few I actually bought)
    Great freebie

    • -1

      same

  • +4

i use viber and it is free you can make call and sms for free as long as there is internet connection
its like skype, and you dont need to log in for Viber

  • +3

viber is another must have. Due to the fact it can push calls. I dont think skype can do that.

    • using viber on android now. still at beta stage tho.

    • Skype for iOS can push calls. But it seems to drain battery (it did a few versions ago, perhaps they've optimised this?)

Viber is much easier to install though, don't need login - similar to whatsapp.

Whatsapp is nicer than all of the above for non-voice chat though!

      • They haven't, it still chugs.

  • it's like free txt!!

  • yeah i like the feature when i can send my location really quickly… ver useful when running late…

  • my most often used app… got it free ages ago

  • Currently using Beluga but might download to have a look since it's free.

  • I never saw the point of this… until I started using it and found other people who use it.
It's a great fall-back if you're ever having trouble with SMS and much better than MMS for sending images reliably.

  • A must have app…..

  • Nice! Whatsapp is probably the most useful app on my phone! =D It was the first app i bought as well (i think it costed about 2.50 at the time) and i don't regret paying for it either, it's more practical than all the other apps that i paid for. Thanks for the post!

Note: It utilizes data usage instead of $, so be careful if you don't have a large data quota. Not sure how much it actually uses though.

    • I'd think as long as you have a data cap, you're set. Seeing as it's only sending text, it'd be bytes-worth of data (small kilobytes at the most).

    • +1

      Define: Costed.

  • great for sending messages to friends overseas
local ones less since most have capped plans on iphone

  • +2

No option to turn it off. Even after uninstall (delete) app from iphone you number is still registered as still using the app (ie any of your friend who install this app afterward see you as using the apps). Should have option to unregistered you number.

  • is the iphone version only free for 1 year as well?

    • No, it's permanently free if you get it before the deal expires. Otherwise it's $1.19.

  • So, apart from group chat, how exactly does this differ from other IM applications such as GoogleTalk, MSN Messenger etc?

    • +1

it essentially act as your normal SMS because it shows list of people in your phonebook who has the app and you can msg to.

you dont have to signup requiring a login + password

  • Does this work for people who dont have internet on their mobile? (but has wifi and android)

    • +1

You can use it with wifi, but the app must have internet to use it.

      • Thankyou for the prompt reply!

  • -3

    Not sure its free anymore…..

EDIT: its showing $1.19 for me, maybe I am doing something wrong… :)

    • still showing free for me.

  • +1

This has been free for ages.. well it was when it first came out.

for those of you that really want to get with the times, go check out "HeyTell". It's the modern day equivalent of Push To Talk / PTT…

  • +2

long distance relationship for over a year and no money spent…thts wt i call awesomeness…xoxo whatsapp

  • didn't know it costed iphone users….but it's free for android and Nokia phones.
great news for the iphone users then.
get those fingers cramping up ppl.

    • iOS users have a once off fee, android users have a $2/yr fee after the first year.

    nice found. direct link please!

  • I downloaded it and it says not compatible with ipod touch… :(

  • Is this free for a limited time only??? And yes, I <3 What's App…

  • +1

WhatsApp ah I see what you did there

  • nice app nice find! thx

  • edit: removed as not required.

  • Easily my most used app. Also works on a number of old nokias.

    • The best app ever man! I use this the most on my iPhone ;)

  • +1

remember folks, whatsapp'ing while driving is still a serious offence!

  • +1

Doesn't work with iPod Touch due to one line of code. It worked with older versions. If you have a Jailbroken iPod Touch you can remove that one flag and it'll supposedly work.

  • great app, recommended :)

  • +1

Saved my relatives in the US heaps, as their stupid networks cost them about $0.50 to receive msgs (yes you heard it right,.. to receive !!!!).

    • +1

so people can potentially abuse this and get back at their enemies…american telco's fail

      • +1

it costs them to send the message as well

        • not if you have more credit compared to the other person

  • works across various smartphones - just make sure all your friends have it!

  • After my unsuccessful attempt with Whatsapp, I downloaded Viber which is free and best of all, it works on Ipod touch!

  • appears to have expired… back to $1.19 on the itunes link
