Are these legal to ride on the road in QLD, couldn't find any info….

    • +1

According to Brisbane Times and ABC you can ride on footpaths, but "cannot be ridden Brisbane CBD roads and riders should avoid interacting with traffic."

Official information is on government website. https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/wheeled-device…

      • I live in Bundaberg. Would be riding it on the road

        • excerpt from https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/wheeled-device…

          Rules for wheeled recreational devices
You're not legally required to wear a helmet when using human-powered wheeled recreational devices. However, a helmet is required if the foot scooter has an electric motor. To reduce injuries you should wear protective clothing such as an approved helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards.

Most devices don't need to be registered to operate on Queensland's road network.

If you're travelling on a wheeled recreational device or wheeled toy you must not:

travel on a road with a centre line or median strip, or a 1-way road with more than 1 marked lane
travel on a road with a speed limit greater than 50km/h
travel on a road at night—but you may cross a road while riding your wheeled recreational device by the shortest route. If you need to ride at night, you can ride your wheeled recreational device on a footpath
travel alongside more than 1 other person or vehicle travelling on a road in the same direction, unless you are overtaking
cause a traffic hazard by moving into the path of a driver, or unreasonably obstruct the path of any other road user.
If you're travelling on a wheeled recreational device or wheeled toy you must:

keep to the far left-hand side of the road, and to the left of a footpath (including a shared path)
give way to foot pedestrians on a footpath (including a shared path)
give way to bicycles on a bicycle path.

The QLD state rule will be overridden by local government rules. So make sure Bundaberg doesn't have its own rule against electric scooters.

    • I think your sarcasm was lost on people trying to actually find you the info!

  • For NT

Motorised scooters with a power output greater than 200 watts are defined as motor vehicles in the
NT Motor Vehicles Act. As motor vehicles, motorised scooters used on roads, or in public places,
need to be registered and ridden by licensed riders. However, motorised scooters are not
designed or manufactured to comply with registration requirements and national safety standards
for road vehicles, such as Australian Design Rules (ADRs). Therefore, they cannot be granted
registration for on-road use and may not be ridden on public roads or places open to
the public (including footpaths, bike paths, carparks, etc.

    WUT?

  • How about legality in Vic? I cant see how is it different to mopeds

    • +1

They are technically illegal, although I have a few colleagues who have been using these for their work commute in the Melbourne CBD and they haven't had any trouble.

    • +3
      • +2

        Illegal. Victoria the nanny state.

Looks like it's illegal in most states.

        • +1

          Yeah, including the nanny state.

    • +2

Just this morning I saw a guy riding up Bourke St on one of these, in the bike lane with a helmet on. It seems as long as you're not being an idiot, and tearing down a busy footpath, the cops aren't too bothered.

  • Who is Xiaomi Aus? Not official Xiaomi store right?

  • -4

I can't find any information to suggest the bluetooth exploit for these has been solved yet. Possibly a rare occurrence, but consumers should be aware of the potential problem. As of Feb 2019 it was reported these were able to be remotely controlled due to weak bluetooth security.

  • Saw someone in central station (nsw) with one of these, heading towards the eddy ave exit. Had a helmet on so I assume riding with caution.

    • That was probably me :/

    • +1

It’s fine, I can’t repeat myself enough follow rules and your legal. So many people on scooters down sydney, it’s the thing of 2019.

  • anyone got SA laws?

  • +4

These are pretty cool and bought one myself recently but there will always be idiots.

I was out for lunch with the wife on the weekend and this family of twats were riding these things around in the local shopping centre courtyards where restaurants have tables and people eat. I got bloody annoyed with the stupid kids screaming down the courtyard right behind where my wife was sitting so told then to bugger off. Stupid dad was riding a motorised unicycle and his two children were on electric scooters.

Why the heck would you bring these to a shopping centre rather than going to a park!

    • +2

"Why the heck would you bring these to a shopping centre rather than going to a park!"

Because they think they're very cool and want you to notice them

      • +3

I certainly noticed them. The person who negged my post must be that stupid dad LOL

  • +2

If you live in NSW, Vaseline is extra.

  • +3

Waiting for these to drop down to $400, since new model is out, we should expect these to drop more in the upcoming days.

    • +5

Both Xiaomi M365 Pro and the Ninebot Max available now with better specs. M365 is still a decent Scooter though. I have done approx 600k without any major issues.

      • 9bot Max, Isn't that thing $1000 delivered though?

        • It is a bit Pricey. Comes with a bigger battery and better range though. And, its rear wheel drive. The scooter itself suppose to be weighing 20Kg. So not as portable?.

          • @Trioboy: Extra range is nice but I personally think it's too heavy.
Even M365 Pro is getting on the heavy side but I think it's a good balance between weight and range.

  • +1

Illegal to ride this in NSW unless on private land.

Powered foot scooters and skateboards cannot be registered and can only be used on private land

  • Is this really the right forum on asking about legalities?

  • -3

Will the seller provide an Australian Tax Invoice?

    Asking for TRS purposes…ha

    • I don't think you are allowed to carry this on the plane because of the battery back. unless you are planning to sail out of the country.

      • i was joking :-)
        see below.

    • +3

      Seriously?

      • it's sarcasm,…a joke, like when people say "asking for a friend".

however, the question still remains: is there a tax invoice ?

  • i think even in qld you have to be 16 yo and above to use these in footpaths.

    • +1

Yeah, I don't think these work too well below the footpaths ;)

  • How are these working in Sydney since there are so many bumpy roads? I looked into these and apparently they have no suspension?

    • +3

you have to take it easy over bumps and potholes otherwise you run the risk of getting a puncture. As soon as you realise how difficult it is to replace the tube, you will be kicking yourself.
They ride relatively comfortably over minor bumps since they ride on pneumatic tyres.

    • Best way to manage bumpy roads is to increase the tyre size. The M365 will happily take 10" tyres. Gives you a lot more cushioning.

  • +6

Aww yeah, these are so fun and mod-friendly.
just upgraded mine to have the pro dash and more torque (and slimed the tubes)

paid ~$535 on a gearbite ebay deal a few months ago, still going strong.

Of course you look like a tool with these, but you're a tool making great time - so damn the haters :P

also to those considering other scooters, this is probably the best weight / performance you can get.
can carry it around coles when doing a quick shop instead of leaving it to be pinched or messed with

    • Is it fairly easy to install the Pro dash?

      • +3

super super easy no soldering or even glue (comes with adhesive sticker for new dash ) etc.

        1. ply the old lid (easily pops off)
        2. unscrew then unplug old dash
        3. plug in and screw in new dash.
        4. pop new lid on
        5. update your chosen firmware with the downG app

Plenty of info up on youtube

Since the whole brain is in the dash, it now goes 32km also.

        • +1

Oh man, I had no idea! How much is a new dash? Which one are you using?

          • @squinly: Around 15 bucks
eBay has heaps of them just search
            M365 pro dash upgrade

            • @ndftz: Can't find anything much less than 30 bucks. Care to share any links?

              • @Punkboy: Sorry looks like the one I got from ebay is no longer available.

would be well worth the 30 bucks FWIW ( i'm guessing free shipping right ? )

        • Awesome, thanks for the info!

  • Grabbed one last night before the deal ended. Can anyone who got one comment on delivery times?

    • Well, a week later and they haven't shipped it yet. Not exactly speedy

  • M365 SCOOTER HAS BEEN RECALLED!!!

Everyone! I posted the other day saying my handlebars had literally fallen off while riding, causing me to have a fractured rib. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/466385#comment-7438613

Well I contacted Xiaomi, and they said to check if my model had a certain serial number because they have been VERY RECENTLY recalled due to this exact issue!
