  • no stock in SA :(

  • These are great - USB charging so you can recharge away from 240v eg car, camper trailer, battery box etc

  • Wanted 2 but all stores in WA only have 1 so won't bother.

Wouldn't it be better off to have a Baofeng UV-5R that can you can program channels into, has 5w power and costs about the same?

    • Depends on what you want I think, to chat to the kids on holiday at close range this would be fine, for anything more than that or serious work/recreational use I'd strongly suggest buying an on brand 5W handheld (not the Baofeng).

    • Definitely not, please dont buy them. Theyre illegal to use here and arent made to the standards needed to ensure they dont affect other wireless signals such as the emergency channels. Especially since they can transmit on channels you need your HAM license for

  • Most likely just being discontinued as it’s a pretty old model

  • Can anyone elaborate… I assume people might use these for example in the country to communicate with others on a farming property or the like where mobile phones might not have enough signal to work effectively. They seem to be just a more powerful version of walkie-talkies' that were popular with kids of my generation. Could imagine highway crews and drivers of large equipment possibly using to communicate with other drivers/crews?

Anything that only transmits at 1W is hardly more than a better version of the toys and not really for any real use - you're wanting 5W for anything worthwhile.

        Really?
We have 2 of these and use them when doing challenging off-road stuff eg deep water crossings or being guided through Gunshot creek. Good range, and certainly not a toy. 5 watts is a waste of time unless it's in vehicle with external antenna. Huge battery life, decent range.
        Toy? No way.

    we picked up these https://www.jbhifi.com.au/uniden/uniden-uh45-80-channel-uhf-…
when they were on sale but in a 3 pack.. only .05w though.

but has 'kid zone' which means no one can talk to these sets when its activated, and in saying that, if another persons has one of these with kidz zone turned on to the same channel setup, then you can here them.

These were only .05w though, but work well enough for the kids as long as there isn't to much undulation or buildings in the way.
they do USB charging as long as you put rechargeable in them and heaps of features too.

As far as being illegal, you can purchase an appropriate licence to operate, well that's what I did when had an in car setup.
