Lifehacker article is a good read

props for including this link: http://www.e164.org/non-search.php

Very nice. Also just read about it on Ausdroid. Don't forget $30 cashback from MoneyBackCo :)

  • Signed up for data with them for the galaxy tab, and have been very pleased with them so far….. have rung customer service twice, (mix up with addresses), and was very pleased with the service I got.

  • you cant actualy call 1300 13 and 1800 or it cost whoppers to? what abt when it say freecall 1800?

    • "Freecall" usually only applies to landlines and most mobile service providers charge for these calls (its all in the fine print!)

    • You can call these numbers, but with the call costs — you'd be mad to!

    • If you choose the pre-paid ('As You Go') option, you have to add further credit (ie more than your base $39.90) to make those calls; if on post-paid, those calls just get added to your bill. For any of those numbers, the rate is 29c/min.

Alternatively, you could go Boost's $40 UNLTD, which is very similar, and also on the Optus network:
      - unlimited calls/text/MMS within Australia
      - unlimited calls to 13/1800
      - unlimited voicemail
      - 3 GB of data (as opposed to 4 GB on amaysim)
      http://www.boost.com.au/products/plans/overview#plan_SuperCa…

The fine print's here if you want to read it:
      http://www.optus.com.au/dafiles/OCA/AboutOptus/LegalAndRegul…

  • includes international call by any chance? ;)

    • No it doesn't.

"What you don’t get is any credit for international calls or texts, or the ability to call 1300 or 1800 numbers or make video calls."

From the lifehacker article posted by neil.

  • so this is on the optus network.

does that mean I could buy an optus locked phone and use an amaysim sim card?

    • +1

Yes! As it's on the same network.

      • -2

That's not correct. Only an Optus SIM will work in an Oputs locked phone (same goes for any provider). The phones frequencies would match so it'll practically work for you if unlocked.

        • Optus network locks. Amaysim uses the Optus network.

I'm pretty sure my old locked blackberry worked with liveconnected/TPG/Amaysim I have used. And it doesn't work with the lycamobile(telstra) SIM I have.

Best to get a AMAYSIM sim and then try it on your phone. I reckon that's worth a try.

    • +1

Yes, you can use an Amaysim sim in an Optus-network-locked phone.

  • So this is a post paid- no contract service? not like the optus $50 prepaid when u buy 50 credit and get unlimited for the next 30days?

    • yes

  • Although Amaysim is using the optus network, does/will Optus give priority and bandwidth to Optus customers in regards to the data usage?
i.e. Person 1 (who is with optus) and Person 2 (who is with Amaysim) access the app store on their ipad at the same time, Person 1 (who is with optus) get priority?

Otherwise… all Telco now have to become even more competitive with their mobile plans… this is a super crazy plan!! =D

    • I get 3+ mbps on my tpg

whether you're signing up Optus or Amaysim wouldn't make a difference to Optus though, they are still getting paid either way

and I've also seen many pure Optus customers getting shafted with bad reception and low 3G speeds in certain areas

  • EdZz - This shouldn't happen, and I haven't noticed it with any of the Optus resellers I've dealt with.

Gavman - On their website it says 1300/1800 are 29c/min, doesn't mention 13 though. If you have a smart phone, you could set up a VOIP service and use voip to call these numbers for one fixed price.

    • I don't believe they would do something like this either, either way once i'm off my contract, i'm definitely converting =D

  • +1

Very good deal. Already on their prepaid

  • Is it possible to use it on Optus Mytab?

    • Yes I do not see why not (it uses Optus). But that's a lot of data/calls…

  • can someone give me a real 1300 number to test on http://www.e164.org/non-search.php ? because everything i've tried gives me nothing.

It is only a user-powered directory, not magic. It only shows numbers which have been submitted, and sometimes they are not exact matches. Mostly it works though.

    • NRMA 13x xxx is on the system…

    • Dominos 131 888 is on there

  • This is excellent. If I used my phone enough I'd definitely sign up.

  • you can call your North Korean friends/enemies at 99cents a min,

    Amaysim!

  • Great post thanks. Gonna use this to trial Optus to see if it works well in my area.

  • Any fair-use policy? I know I once sent 14,000 text messages in a month on my TPG Unlimited.

    • Apparently so — it's not described well except 'no business use' so you can't run a telemarketer business.

HTF did u even manage that? that's like more than 18 msgs an hour constantly @ 24/7/31

      • it was february and most of them were probably on valentine's day ;)

      • Each msg equated to 10 messages and were sent out to 1400 or so people. Took a whole day to send with my phone plugged in to the mains.
