I know support might be issue for someone, I know that people prefer local AU stock, bnt when you can now buy a flagship phone Huawei mate 20 pro at 800+ and a grey stock Samsung galaxy s10e at 700+, it just seems strange to me to consider pixel 3/3A.

    • +1

Not only is it comparing mid range to premium, but pixels are made for the US, and only really see value or features in the US.

100% agree with you. I would only consider pixel 3a at $500. Anything more is hard to justify.

      • I totally agree, I looked for the best value I could get for sub $400, I compared the phones that had the features I was looking for (6" display, headphone port, SD card support) to the Pixel 3a and ended up picking the Nokia 7 Plus which is marginally slower but same res and size display, same RAM/Storage, cameras that I feel are a solid match for the Pixel range, they are only let down by the lack of Googles camera app, Googles HDR and Night Sight are very good but the Nokia app has a pro mode where you can control ISO and Exposure time so you can do some cool stuff with long exposures (4 secs max).

      Ah, the which-phone-should-I-get-situation…

I originally wanted to go for the S10e, but upon researching into it, apparently the camera isn't that good - certainly not as good as the Pixel 3a, and battery life is also supposedly subpar. Slow to receive updates too…

Regarding the Huawei… I don't know. The current ban worries me a bit, and apparently the EMUI software is frustrating.

The 2 most important things currently for me in a smart phone is:
      a) Camera
      b) Battery

And the Pixel 3a is supposed to excel in both these areas. And it's clean Android, with 3 years guaranteed updates… and it's the cheapest!

      • Ive been using Huawei since Mate 20 Pro and now P30, love them for battery and camera, the rest doesn't worry me much. I haven't used my iPhone Xs Max much these days except for Facetime.

      • +1

If you want the best camera and really good battery then I don't see why you shouldn't get the 3a. But keep in mind the s10e has the top SOC atm (SD 855 or exynos 9820) whereas the 3a uses snapdragon 670. Huawei phones are decent, I've had the p7 and p9 but yeah the software is not the great and I really prefer my note 9 I have now.

        • +1

While it true that that the S10 range have the Exynos (here at least), which is better/faster than the 3a, I've got a mate in the US who purchased the SD 855 S10+ and hates it! It's also a matter of taste… but he didn't find the camera amazing, and finds it has that occasional "Samsung lag" (something I get on my S7 as well…)

I just really appreciate what Google has achieved here. Everyone is after a great camera on their phone, and battery life is also really important (well to me at least). And it's clean Android!

          • @Uncle Roger: If only there was a perfect device that could do it all!

          • @Uncle Roger: SD is supposed to be miles ahead of exynos.. My Exynos S10+ has not lagged on me once tbh. There's are way more positives in the S10 range than 3a, being build materials, software and hardware inclusions… I guess there is a market for both phones but if you could get the S10e for around the same as a 3a,s10e shoulddl win 8/10

      • -3

I think you will find the battery below the pixel 3, which was already below most flagships unfortunately. One of the reasons I sold my p3xl. Given also the specs are much lower than the s10e, the pixel 3a doesn't have wireless charging, water proofing, etc. Literally only good thing is basic no zoom photos which pixel wins. You also have to factor in the bugs etc that come from getting the latest updates. They broke now playing for over 4 months on p2xl. They rarely focus on fixing issues like that.

The pixel 3xl battery life was worse than previous generation p2xl. Also consider that Street major updates pixels battery life get worse. Many reviewers talk about this, and the performance issues that arise after a few months.

        • +1

Why are you talking about the Pixel 3 and 2? This is advertising the 3a, and its battery life is much better than just about all phones released this year with reports of up to 10 hours screen on time.

Google have smashed it out of the park with the 3a, which is why it's getting so much love :)

          • -4

@Jebus: All reviews I have watched have put both performance and battery life well below the pixel 3. Pixel 3 is already below par on battery life.

            • +2

@onlinepred: i own a pixel 3a XL. I can get 11 hrs screen time and 2.5 days battery. My OG pixel was barely giving me 1 day battery. 3aXL has some of the best battery.
"among the longest-lasting smartphones we've tested in the past year-and-a-half."
              https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/brnd12/in_toms_gui…

              • -1

@nathan-drake: And yet mkbhd and Mr mobile says it's worse than pixel 3 and 3xl.

You could only compare if you owned 3xl or 3. Og xl had terrible battery life, one of the worst of any new phone I've owned. Also got worse and worse after each update.

        • +1

Yep the 3a is better than the normal pixel 3 in some major areas, especially the battery

          • -3

@MrChadley: All reviews I have watched say battery is ok, worse than even the pixel 3. Also it's only better than pixel 3 in price, otherwise misses out in many areas.

            • +1

@onlinepred: The battery on the 3aXl is an absolute monster. Longest lasting battery I've ever had. The combination of 'only' a 6 inch screen at 1080p with the slower processor means it lasts forever. Here's a video where it beats the 5000mah Zenfone and a few other phones. https://youtu.be/9a_TvN5Aw6Q Forgot he also comments its the longest lasting battery he's ever tested and he does all major flagships.

              • +1

@ImpatientTurtle: Strange! Perhaps in that exact scenario of running those tests? Top reviewers said the battery life is ok, and doesn't compare to flagships like even pixel 3. I would expect that the pixel lasts longer when playing local stored video, it's the lowest res, lowest brightness, and smallest screen in that bunch right?

                • @onlinepred: If you mean Mkbhd he's a bit of an odd one when it comes to battery. Was only getting 4 hours of SoT with the one plus 7 pro when every one else was getting 6 hours. I think he's very camera focused and kills batteries faster than most people can. He only tested the 3a though. Yeah smallest screen, same res as a couple. He sets them all to the same brightness with a nit meter at the start though. I like his battery tests because it's mixed usage which seems the best test. The 670 snapdragon is just really power effectient compared to the 875. Much less power though.

                  • +1

@ImpatientTurtle: Isn't the main selling point of this phone the camera? Would be weird NOT taking that many photos with it right?

                    • +1

@onlinepred: I've got a 7 month old son, I take so so so many photos haha. Maybe video kills it? I take less of those. I just know I even saw some reviewers comment that they don't know how Mkbhd killed it in 4 when they couldn't in 6. But yeah that's the main reason I bought this, technically a downgrade from a flagship but the camera and battery are more important to me and the 3aXl kills it in those areas.

      • I'm currently rocking a Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 with Gcam installed since a few ago days and the photos are bloody amazing quality and I'm currently at 17% battery remaining after 11.5 hours screen on time.

For under $300 for the 4gb ram version from an Australian seller I am amazed how insanely good this phone is…this is coming from a Samsung Note 4 however.

Software is totally fine after installing Nova Launcher. Some really handy things, such as pressing the power button turns off the torch, no real complaints.

But most of all it has an IR blaster, 3.5mm Jack and dual sim/SD card slot.

      • Camera and battery do not need too much update. Basically you get them when you open the box. Maybe some tweaks over time for camera. My wife is using p30 pro. For camera and battery, can not be happier. However people should think about the BAN. It is a beautiful phone anyway.

    • Agreed. You can find the Nokia 8.1 for $450 grey stock. Other than having an IPS display it's basically the same thing (with expandable storage to boot).

      • Nokia also has slower update (Nokia 7 Plus was 2-3 months later than Pixel and Essential phone on Pie update last year), not as good camera (you can port GCam and it's close but still not the exact same thing), Notch (that quite a number of people hate).

Wish Google would throw in 3 years of unlimited original quality photo upload in their midranger though. That would really solidify the proposition.

  • -2

With so many problems including random shutdowns, I think it'd be better for everyone to skip this generation of Pixel.

    • +3

Please let me know of this magical problem free device so I can purchase it instead. Users on the whirlpool Pixel 3a thread have unanimously praised the device.

      • +1

Agree. No device is perfect upon release, and I've pretty much only seen positive reviews for the 3a online!

        • -2

They are the best budget phone in US. Most reviewers are from the US. They also all say how mediocre it is, but it has the best photos of all budget phones. In Aus we have much more choice so it doesn't apply in the same regard as US reviews.

  • +1

Seems expensive for a device without a microsd card slot and limited to a tiny 64gb

    • +1

You say that as if everybody wants/needs a large amount of expandable storage as a feature in a smartphone.

      • Does 3a come with unlimited original backups?

        • No it doesn't

        • +1

Website says unlimited high quality backups

          • @buckster: This is my point, every phone gets this. It's compressed. Still great but no 4k video upload etc and no original quality uploads.

      • People who dont normally buy the sub $200 phones and wouldnt drop this much money on a low end device

  • +1

OK guys. I have a 3aXL for the past one week. If you check the whirlpool forums people are getting it for 599 and 730 from JB - check the thread, people have posted receipts there which u can price match. Much better than this kogan deal IMO. Also, this phone is an absolute beast for 599 IMO. Amazing camera and battery. Very good screen and software. I have used xiaomis, samsungs and my friends pixel 3xl. THis is better than most as an overall experience IMO. Everything just works, and for a great price. It feels almost like a flagship in day to day use. They cut corners in the right places IMO

    • Here's the $599 Pixel 3A receipt
      https://whrl.pl/RfmRVW

      • It's worth printing that receipt and asking for a price match or price beat +5%
If saving $20 or $50 off $619 seems appealing!!

    • I don't think they left many corners remaining to cut right? Worse screen, speakers, no water proofing, less mics, worse CPU and GPU, longer photo processing time, removed wireless charging. That's a lot to cut! IMO waiting for pixel 4 to come out and buying a used pixel 3 would be the better move. Even pixel 2xls are better than pixel 3a xl. 100% agree that for someone who doesn't like tech, follow phones or phone reviews, and just use their phone note and then, not for phone calls etc, this is decent value of they want to take lots of photos without macro/zoom/wide angle.

      • +3

Who is paying you for this crap? People who have ACTUALLY USED IT are saying things like "I use this in preference to my 3XL because of the body, sound, phone quality, almost identical performance" and so on. While you're spending hours having some bizarre vendetta against it.

Truly weird, your dedication to filling the thread with crap.

        • No one would sell their Pixel 3 XL to buy a 3a xl lol. No one who is looking at buying a S10 plus suddenly decides to go buy a 3A. The people who buy it love it, because they are used to buying really bad mid ranger phones - and the 3a is a great mid range phones sold at a premium cost. Them saying that it's better than XXX flagship etc is just deceiving others. It is designed and priced for the US. For the price of a 3A, you are almost at S10e price point which you cannot compare against except camera performance.

Anyone who has done research knows the 3A/and 3AXl has inferior speakers and not even the dual front facing setup of the 3/3XL. And if you know anything about phones, you would know if you value phone call quality/speaker phone quality, you wouldn't consider a Pixel. It's just lying and misinformation.

          • +1

            @onlinepred:

No one would sell their Pixel 3 XL to buy a 3a xl lol

Good thing I didn't say that, then. As ever, your grasp on reality is non-existent.

I'm more inclined to listen to people who own/have used both extensively rather than your childish fevered imaginings.

            • @mickeyjuiceman: We will get the 3A at work in a week for testing, and I've only ever bought Nexus/Pixels until this year - except for note 8 which I sold a few months after buying. I bought OG Xl, 2XL and 3XL - I'll probably buy the 4 also. I say this just so you know my experience.

My point is that most people wouldn't use both devices, as they are targeted against completely different markets.

              • @onlinepred: All these posts about a device you haven't used. Puts things into perspective.

                • @mickeyjuiceman: I don't need to use it to know what it has and how much it costs.

                  • @onlinepred: The sheer ludicrousness of this, for a consumer device that people use for hours a day, is extraordinary.

                    • -2

@mickeyjuiceman: Yep 100%. Seems crazy people would rather save a hundred bucks to get a mid range phone over premium when we rely and use them so much, and they are lasting longer these days.

  • Those with the Amex Harvey Norman deal can also get it for $599 at Harvey Norman after $50 rebate.

  • +2

Only regret I have about my pixel 3a is not getting the xl version. I've had it since May 9th.

It's very smooth, despite having a midrange processor, battery life is amazing, so is the screen and the pictures it takes.

Not sure why this phone would perform any worse in Australia

    • Because we get phones for different prices here. This phone and price is targeted for the us as they don't get many of the brand's and models we get. Seems a great phone if you can get it closer to $500 AUD and like budget phones.

  • +2

This phone is lower specs then the Samsung A8 I paid $360 for not sure why you would pay that much for it

    • +1

@asa79 Personal preference would be my answer.
      I owned a Samsung S8+, I didn't like it and bought the Pixel 2XL then 3XL which I love.
My friend bought a Samsung S9+ he preferred his phone over mine, he hates updates!!
As he says I don't want to learn how to use the phone again every year, fair enough.
He thought his screen was better, I agreed, he thought my camera was better.
He likes watching videos and is not into photography, me, I'm the opposite.
Oh dear I'm going to deep into the philosophy of love and phones, anyhow some phones are absolute crap,
some phones are an absolute ripoff, Cough Cough🍎🍎!! But 80% of phones are just right for someone out there!!

      • So your saying a phone that costs just under double and has lower specs is better

        • If it suits your usecase ;-)

        • Hold On your maths is all wrong!! You stated "that costs just under double" you appear to be comparing the Samsung A8 32GB at Officeworks and JB HIFI for $529 & 549, to the Pixel 3a 64GB $649 & $649 respectively.
Yes sure there are bargains to be hold but most people still buy their phones from bricks and mortar such as these. In no way is your comment accurate!!
If you go to GSM arena you can compare phones you'll find that these phones are quite similar specs, the screen size and pixel count is identical. The Samsung A8 CPU is only marginally higher specced than the Pixel 3a; Samsung A8 Octa-core (2x2.2GHz & 6x1.6GHz) compared to the Pixel 3a Octa-core (2x2.0GHz & 6x1.7GHz). The Pixel hard drive is 2X larger, the camera is much better, the Pixel weighs much lighter, the phone is waterproof yet not IP rated but multiple videos testing the Pixel 3a shows that it is indeed waterproof to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes or longer. Yet for some reason you prefer the Samsung A8, I would prefer the Pixel 3a. This goes back to my previous comment that phones in most cases are about personal preference, it doesn't necessarily mean one phone is better than the other but one phone suits one persons needs/desires more than another phone!!
